Florence Foster Jenkins, the Roundworld Christine

As for the whole "can't sing a note" thing, she either has an exaggerated opinion of her ability to sing, or is just pretending to be dreadful so she can "miraculously" become a great singer (once she's frustrated her more musically gifted rival Agnes into quitting the opera, that is); it's been noted in other Discworld books that sometimes you have to be really good to appear to be really bad. This also means she was pretending not to notice that Agnes was "ghosting" her during the opera, .

opera.

It could be that TP was also alluding to one Narcissa Florence Foster Jenkins, a truly extraordinary opera singer, who was blissfully unaware her singing voice was that of an out-of-tune strangled cat but who used inherited money and a forceful personality to self-promote her performances. The USA fell in with the joke and treated the homely-looking Florence, at least to her face, as a star diva and her performances were usually sell-outs. Christine is perhaps a Florence Foster Jenkins blessed with star quality and captivating beauty: because she looked the part and had Agnes to provide a voice, the illusion carried itself off sucessfully.

Agnes notes at one point that Christine is "remarkably clever in some specialized ways", and Christine is awfully short with Agnes after she blurts out her suspicions that Walter Plinge is the Phantom. So, what if she's just not as dumb as she lets on? In Christine's case, she knows she's in a story like that of Literature/ThePhantomOfTheOpera, but like Malicia from Discworld/TheAmazingMauriceAndHisEducatedRodents she thinks she's the main character. All those times she was "accidentally" insulting Agnes and yanking the dogs' chain? All an act to mess with Agnes, of whose talent she's jealous, in yet another reversal of Christine and Carlotta from Phantom of the Opera!

* Note that the one other Discworld character we know of who "looks elvish" was a very good singer.
