''Grisaia no Kajitsu'' (known as ''The Fruit of Grisaia'' in the West) is a VisualNovel released by Frontwing in 2011.

Growing restless with his unspecified but clearly shady job at the start of the story, Kazami Yuuji requests to be transferred into a normal school. Seeing as he has some emotional issues and a traumatic background, the most that could be accomplished was enrolling him in [[DustbinSchool Mihama Academy]], a closed learning environment established to nurture students who find themselves at odds with the world around them. There are only five other students, all of them girls from decently wealthy families who have similarly murky pasts. He quickly integrates himself into the class while the girls begin dropping little hints as to the reason they are in such a specialized and secluded school in the first place.

The story is in large parts a romance, but many routes actually set up further events based on Yuuji's own abused backstory and presumed dead sister. While interacting with the girls, he is liable at any moment to be called away to his special part-time 'cleaning' jobs at only a moment's notice. His military regimen also puts him slightly at odds with the girls, making it unclear how well he can truly integrate himself into a normal lifestyle.

Two sequels to the game have been released: ''VisualNovel/TheLabyrinthOfGrisaia'' in 2012, and ''VisualNovel/TheEdenOfGrisaia'' in 2013. A spin-off game, ''Idol Mahou Shoujo Chiru Chiru Michiru'', featuring heroine Michiru as a magical girl, was announced on April 1, 2014; it was originally thought to be an April Fool's joke, but ended up getting released later that year. The first game has received an English translation patch. In 2014, Frontwing and Sekai Project teamed up to raise the money needed to bring the entire trilogy to the United States via Kickstarter; it was fully funded within 24 hours. ''Kajitsu'' was released on Steam in May 2015.

On October 27th, 2016, Frontwing announced a fourth installment to the series dubbed ''[[http://grisaia-pt.com/en/index.html Grisaia: Phantom Trigger]]'', which will come in several parts and feature an entirely new cast of characters with a [[ActionizedSequel different tone]].

An anime adaptation of ''Grisaia no Kajitsu'', produced by 8-Bit, began airing in the fall of 2014. The voice cast from the visual novels reprised their roles.

----
!!Provides examples of:

* AdultsAreUseless: The six main character of Mihama Academy all sport [[DarkAndTroubledPast painfull pasts]], and most of it is caused by adults, most specifically parents failing to do their jobs properly, and given how most of them behave throughout the novel they don't fair much better in the present.
* AnAesop
** The story carries an underlying message that whatever helps you get through things is probably okay, even if they seem wrong. Maybe they will be wrong in the long term, but do what you can when you have to. To wit:
*** Michiru [[spoiler:acts the clown since otherwise she feels entirely worthless]]. It's no longer really healthy for her, but at the time she started doing it, it was absolutely critical.
*** Sachi [[spoiler:obsessively obeys all orders because she perceives herself to be selfish and terrible]] but while this helped [[spoiler:overcome her PTSD temporarily]] it did lead her to [[spoiler:attempt to burn down her school when asked to stop the exams]]. Stated explicitly in this case.
*** Makina [[spoiler:mentally regressed in order to cope with the trauma her photographic memory witnessed, seeming to feel being deliberately dense or unserious helped her see any good in the world again]].. This let her function as a living person again, [[spoiler:but it severely stunted her emotional growth.]]
*** Amane [[spoiler:tries to be everyone's caretaker and big sister - especially Yuuji's - to make up for feeling like she failed to protect Yuuji's sister Kazuki]]. This lead to her becoming much more outgoing and caring for others, [[spoiler:but left her with extremely low self-worth.]]
*** Yumiko [[spoiler:becomes cynical and aloof to endure how her family effectively treated her like just property all her life]]. While it gave her a very strong sense of right and wrong, [[spoiler:it crippled her capacity to open up towards others.]]
** There's also a firm message delivered by Yuuji. People don't save each other; People save themselves. A little help is good, but in the end it's up to the person with the problem to help themselves truly deal with their issues. Doing it all by yourself is something you could spend your whole life on and still not succeed.
** [[spoiler:Irisu Makina]] has a different aesop than the other girls. Instead, hers is to rely on others willing to help if you can't deal with the situation by yourself in order to solve it. Otherwise, it will only lead to ruin for you.
** Yumiko and Makina's story have the overall message that [[spoiler:even if your blood family doesn't care for you, don't lose hope. Sooner or later, you'll come across people who love you and accept you for who you are.]]
* AllWomenAreLustful: Yuuji is apparently surrounded by rather lusty women. Even his boss flirts with him. Only Michiru seems exempt.
* ApologisesALot: Yumiko and Amane tends to do this. It actually becomes a plot point in both of there respective routes, where protagonist Yuuji tries to correct this habit of theirs.
* ArrangedMarriage: Yumiko's mother was a small-time landowner who married an up and coming railroad baron at the wishes of her family.
* ArtisticLicenseBiology: [[spoiler:While cell memory similar to Michiru's does exist, and the heart is certainly the most reliable organ to donate for it to happen, it doesn't actually transmit the entire personality as a living consciousness with memories and all. Even if it did, it would absolutely not co-exist with Michiru in the separate-but-equal state shown here. It could still possibly be given a pass, but only if Michiru's case of cell memory was the strongest known one to date, and if she had an entirely separate case of mental illness, most likely schizophrenia.]]
* ArtisticLicenseGeography: A highway sign in episode 5 indicates that Interstate 12 is in California. The real Interstate 12 is located entirely within Louisiana, connecting Baton Rouge and Slidell.
* ArtisticLicenseMartialArts: Zigzagged. Yuuji's hand-to-hand combat skills are way over the top, but his actual techniques and strategies are very realistic. In fact, when he teaches Makina some basic self-defense techniques, he doesn't teach her martial arts but ''actual self-defense techniques'', focusing overall on running away from your attacker and finding a safe place to hide from them. After all, there's no way a 90-pound girl like Makina would ever stand up in a fight against a grown man, no matter her training.
* ArtShift: There are some special CG images that portray everyone as [[SuperDeformed chibified versions of themselves]], including [[{{Bishounen}} Yuuji]] of all people. Mostly used for comedic effect or during a weird moment.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:After being outwitted and beaten by Yuuji, Michiaki's world collapses and he tries to understand the suffering he put his wife and daughter through. To his dismay, he simply can't do it. All his empathy was burned away thanks to his own father. In her good end, Sakaki resolves to help him get better, and even in her bad end it's implied he manages to mellow out a bit.]]
* AttendingYourOwnFuneral: To make a point, Yuuji [[spoiler:fakes Michiru's death and buries her. She's quite astonished to hear that people actually do care about her and the letters they left her push her to making a real decision instead of just running away]]. So then she has a choice to make: [[spoiler:Stay dead, or come out of the box?]]
* AuthorityInNameOnly: Supposedly, Makina's grandfather is the head of the Irisu family. In truth, the Irisu are matrilineal and thus he has no real power to help her.
* BabiesEverAfter:
** Several endings end far enough in the future to see Yuuji with a wife and children, generally a daughter.
** In Amane's route we see that this trope also applied to [[spoiler:their daughter]], who went on to have a daughter of her own years later.
* BaitAndSwitch: When Amane starts being more flirtatious with Yuuji and the latter starts to think of her motives, he wonders if he met her before and then reminisces of a girl he played with in his childhood. [[spoiler:While said girl is hinted to be Amane, it turns out to actually be Sachi.]]
* BarefootSuicide: In the anime, Michiru's friend takes off her shoes before jumping off the roof of the school building in a flashback.
* BatmanGambit: [[spoiler:In Yumiko's route, Yuuji plots to overthrow Michiaki from the Presidency of the East Beach Railroad group by getting enough shares from the small shareholders. However, this was just a ruse to catch attention and distract him from the real plan of going after government sponsors instead.]]
* BatmanGrabsAGun: Yuuji usually has reservations about killing people outside of his line of work. [[spoiler:That reservation gets thrown out of the window when Yuuji's had enough of Irisu Kiyoka and her treatment of Makina. Or when Amane is killed in her bad end, when Yuuji blows Sakashita's head of with a shotgun without thinking twice.]]
* BeachEpisode: Right before the route branchings, the cast go to the beach. A miserable time is had by Michiru because the universe hates her. [[spoiler:If you pursue her, you get another beach scene, which is more pleasant for the girl. Sachi's route also includes another beach scene.]]
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Despite being stranded in the jungle for two weeks without food, the group of girls from Amane's backstory aren't shown to lose an ounce of weight and are perfectly clean. [[spoiler:One of them had a maggot infested gash in her head, but we never see it. Then again, who'd want to?]]
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: If you ask Sachi for something without thinking it through or wording it carefully, you might really regret it. Michiru is completely unable to get Sachi to stop calling her 'Michiru-sama,' which is a request she didn't really mean in the first place.
* BerserkButton:
** At the beginning of Michiru's route, when a well meaning Amane keeps pressing Yuuji about how awkward Michiru is acting, she absolutely blows up without intending to and screams at Amane [[spoiler:necessitating the 'other' Michiru to save the situation.]]
** If Yuuji finds someone he wants to protect, may whatever you worship has the mercy to not let him find you if you try to bring harm to said someone. [[spoiler:Sakaki Michiaki was kicked out of East Beach Group's presidency thanks to a scheme Yuuji came up with after he and Yumiko decide to confront him when on the run because of his attempts to keep Yumiko under his foot, Irisu Kiyoka was nearly killed when he's had enough of her treatment of Makina and Sakashita Keiji also nearly gets killed in his attempt to kill Amane for surviving the accident that claimed his daughter's life.]]
* BetterAsFriends: In most endings, Yuuji will admit to himself that Amane is more important to him than anyone he's really interacted with since his master or JB, but he doesn't want to mix romance into things. He really does see her as something of a big sister figure.
* ABirthdayNotABreak: [[spoiler:Sachi's parents were run over]] on her birthday and right in front of her. That it was this day of all day really worms its way inside her heart, especially with how she had been acting.
* BlandNameProduct: [[Website/{{Yahoo}} Yohoo!]], [[Website/EBay E-Day]]
%%* BlatantLies: "I will insist to the very end that this is an ordinary school. Therefore, you should live like an ordinary student".
* BleachedUnderpants: The Sekai Project localized version available on Steam has the sex scenes removed. Though the sex is acknowledged to have actually happened, the game simply fades to black. The sex is completely dispensed with in the anime, as Yuuji doesn't get romantically involved with any of the girls.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: When the group is stalking Sakaki at the beginning of her route, Makina and Sachi play this to "let off some of the tension".
* BombproofAppliance: In Makina's route [[spoiler:both her and Yuuji hide in a big refrigerator, not just from the Ichigaya agents raiding the building, but from the dust explosion trap that Yuuji set up.]]
* BootstrappedLeitmotif: None of the main characters have actual [[{{Leitmotif}} Leitmotifs]] outside of their respective ending themes. However a few of the in-game music has become synonymous with the characters themselves because they're usually played frequently whenever they're on the scene, complimenting their personalities and traits.
** Yuuji and JB: [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI?t=26m42s Code: xxxx]]. And for Yuuji himself whenever he's in action, [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI?t=31m41s Jam]].
** Yumiko: [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI?t=4m57s Your Town]] and [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI?t=8m13s Sky in a Bottle]].
** Amane: [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI?t=9m51s Rainy Summer Angel]] and [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI?t=16m31s Everyday Warmth]].
** Michiru: [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI Orange Sunshine]] and [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI?t=11m29s Toy Box]].
** Makina: [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI?t=13m6s Shootin' Cat]] and [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI?t=23m44s Jumbo Fruit Parfait DX]].
** Sachi: [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI?t=6m32s The Moon is Watching]] and [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI?t=14m51s Beautiful Place]].
** Chizuru: [[https://youtu.be/gQ8alGmb6QI?t=3m22s Dog Days]].
* BrickJoke:
** At the beginning of a Sachi portion of the story she mentions how the principal asked her to water the flowers if they looked unhealthy. Yuuji says that the next time she makes a request like that she should make an insulting reply and then they continue on with Sachi's whole ExtremeDoormat shtick. Skip forward about half a dozen scenes and Sachi interrupts Chizuru as prompted and walks off, much to her confusion.
** In Michiru's route, Sakaki ''finally'' manages to get those six souvenir pennant to Michiru in the end.
* BringMyBrownPants:
** Michiru does this in Episode 5, when trapped.
** In Episode 7, Yuuji tells a ''terrified'' Sachi that he re-programmed the bombs to freeze when they hit zero. Cue the puddle.
* BrotherSisterIncest: [[spoiler:Upon learning how 'close' Kazuki was with Yuuji]], Amane is pretty squicked. Especially considering the ages of the people in question. [[spoiler:Kazuki]] was apparently under the impression that it wasn't strange at all.
* BungledSuicide: [[spoiler:In the middle of her unrequited love, abandonment and identity issues, Michiru's cat dies and she swallows a lot of the pills she pretends are candy. Yuuji walks in on her with foam around her mouth and completely unconscious. Not the first time she's tried, either. In her bad end, she also attempts suicide in the hospital, with hypoxia leading to brain damage as a result of massive medicinal overdose.]]
* BunnyEarsLawyer: According to JB, all of the 9029 agents talk back to their superiors and disobey direct orders, but Ichigaya puts up with them, including Yuuji, because they're so good at what they do. [[spoiler:Makina inherits these traits when she becomes the next 9029 in her route.]]
* BuriedAlive: [[spoiler:To make a point about how she should be living in a brutally direct way, Yuuji buries Michiru alive when she request to die. However, he leaves her close enough to the surface to easily escape on her own, makes the lid flimsy, makes sure there's an air passage and leaves her a phone to call him on.]]
* CallBack: If you read the flashback in Amane's route and then reread the scene where he turns her down, you'll see him say [[spoiler:that there's no big sister that would try to seriously kiss their little brothers. Except we know Kazuki did exactly that and more and Amane knows that damn well.]]
* {{Calvinball}}: Extreme Sports is apparently a game similar to baseball except it using volleyball as a ball.
* ChickMagnet: It's hinted that Yuuji is probably quite popular with girls, though considering the small cast size it's difficult to tell. What is clear, though, is that there's some UST not only with the girls, but also with the principal and even JB. Makina and Sachi's routes make it painfully obvious.
* ComatoseCanary: Averted: [[spoiler:The transplant girl was awake while supposedly in a vegetative state, but despite her best efforts she could not send any signals about it to her parents.]]
* CompressedAdaptation: The anime speeds through much of the story quite quickly, including cutting some scenes short, skipping others and further removing subplots when they might conflict with later developments. This may have been an attempt to make sense of the route-system that the sequels ultimately ignored in favor of a more set plotline.
* ConversationalTroping: The story goes through a lot of tropes like {{Tsundere}}, [[SugarAndIcePersonality Kuudere]], MookChivalry, TapOnTheHead, ChildhoodFriendRomance and LethalChef. Generally, it seems to do so mainly to point out that they're silly and inaccurate
* CrazyEnoughToWork: Yuuji points out the ridiculousness of his plan, but proceeds to try it anyway as a last ditch effort in order to [[spoiler:save Yumiko from being kidnapped by using [[ItMakesSenseInContext a stolen sports car and a frozen turkey]].]]
* DamnedByFaintPraise: Not that Sachi and Makina notice, but Yuuji describes Tunafishman as 'Certainly not boring' and 'a truly… thought provoking experience.'
* DarkAndTroubledPast: All of the students at Mihama Academy.
* DatePeepers: Catching on that Amane intends to follow him on his date with Sachi, Yuuji decides to be obnoxious and boring by having their date be physical exercise. Irritated, she comes out of hiding quickly.
* ADateWithRosiePalms: Not only does the game have next to zero subtlety in the fact that the girls masturbate but Makina's route even has a moment where, on the subject of using Yuuji as "masturbation fodder", Amane and Sachi openly and comfortably admit their favorite fantasies while Amane effortlessly guesses Michiru and Chizuru's and probably Yumiko's as well, leaving her to conclude that all five of them are masochists. Michiru is left in shock she's been picked apart while Chizuru is reduced to a whimpering puddle of mortification. And that doesn't even include the incident on the common route where Amane sniffs Yuuji's shirt and almost starts playing with herself on his bed unaware that he's since entered his room and is ''casually watching.''
* DeadlyDistantFinale: Amane's epilogue skips ahead, in the end placing itself fifty years in the future and includes how both of them died.
* DeathByAdaptation: In the anime, [[spoiler:Yuuji kills Kiyoka and [[SparedByTheAdaptation gets out of it alive]].]]
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Talked about and ridiculed. Who would become friends with someone that punches them anyway?
* DinnerBathOrSexOffer: Akane tries to offer these choices to Yuuji, but before she's even finished he bluntly states, "I'll have a shower" and walks straight past her.
* DiscretionShot: When we see the girls try on makeup, they go from best to worst with Yumiko, Michiru and Makina before the girls see Sachi and declare they would pity her too much if Yuuji saw what she had done to herself.
* DistantFinale:
** Yumiko's normal end takes place 4 years after the story, the good end 5 years after.
** Makina's bad end takes place six months after and the good end 1 year after.
* DoorStopper: It will take you about 100 hours to get all the endings in the visual novel. Have fun!
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:One of the girls of the Basketball club hangs herself after her puppy dies and the rest of the group decides to [[EatTheDog eat it]].]]
* DrunkDriver: Part of Sachi's problem stems from an accident caused by a drunk truck driver running past a red light and over her parents, in front of her.
* DustbinSchool: Mihama Academy serving this role for students who unable to consistently function long-term in society due to their own emotional/mental issues or due to public backlash from their original hometowns that would cause detrimental effects to themselves or others in a normal school.
* DysfunctionJunction: Mihama was established for gathering individuals with "special circumstances" on their lives. The students end up forming a group with this dynamic naturally.
* EatTheDog: [[spoiler:During the bus crash in Amane's route, one of the girls brought along a small dog. Eventually it died and Kazuki suggested eating it. Her rather direct methods freak everyone out even as they know they wanted to suggest the same. Even Komori, the owner, joined in at the end. However, doing so broke her and she committed suicide a few days later.]]
* EnemyRisingBehind: On Yumiko's route Yuuji gets appointed to her [[spoiler:bodyguard]], and so follows her everywhere, which bothers Yumiko quite a lot, after a while she reaches the end of her patience and snaps at him at how nothing ever happens and there is no real [[spoiler:threat]]. Perfect timing, as you Yuuji just notes that she should just take a look at the trouble brewing behind her back. [[spoiler:Getting surrounded by men in black.]]
* EntendreFailure: Sachi provides a hip ointment to an old man, who leers and says his wife will be quite pleased. Sachi blinks in confusion and continues shopping.
* EpicFail: Played for drama in Yumiko's route. [[spoiler:After she and Yuuji flee into hiding, she begins feeling like a useless burden despite Yuuji's reassurances and tries to learn some housework while she's out. She burns the stew, spills tea on the table and laundry after it gets rained on, breaks half their dishware and generally trashes the place. When Yuuji gets home, he instantly assumes that there was an attack by her father's men, which doesn't help her depression at all.]]
* EpilogueLetter: Michiru's ending has her [[spoiler:and her new friend]] writing a letter. The contents aren't really that important so much as the story establishing how everyone involved is getting along with the new arrangements.
* EvilInc: The Irisu corporation is fundamentally corrupt and cruel. Makina's father Masataka was the only decent member, so he had a little "accident."
* ExactWords:
** Sachi will do exactly what you ask of her and no more, so be careful what you say.
** When Michiru attempts to make Yuuji a sandwich, he says the resulting concoction "exceeded his expectations". By which he meant it was an abomination of a foodstuff unworthy of being called a sandwich... but didn't taste as terrible as it looked.
* EyeColourChange: Done for [[spoiler:Michiru in the anime adaptation, to show which personality was in control. Blue for Michiru, green for the ''other'' Michiru.]]
* EyesAlwaysShut: Sakurai, [[spoiler:one of the basketball club girls that were stranded during Amane's flashback.]]
* EyeScream: To disable a crazed man with a gun, [[spoiler:Yuuji thrusts his fingers into his right eye socket and grabbing his eye without crushing it.]]
* FakingTheDead
** In Michiru's route, [[spoiler:in order to make a point to Michiru, Yuuji paralyzes Michiru with a drug and forces her to confront the reality of her life.]]
** In Amane's route, [[spoiler:Yuuji speculates that Kazuki may have faked her death, but this isn't confirmed in the good ending. If you go for the bad ending you learn she did survive.]]
** In the anime, Yuuji and JB does this as a favor to Yumiko to get away from her father, who at that point had a HeelRealization.
* FanDisservice: During the flashback in Amane's route, [[spoiler:she and Kazuki witness the captain having sex with the teacher. With human limbs beneath them that they were going to feed to the other girls.]]
* {{Fanservice}}: Considering the type of media this is, is par for the course, but seeing Amane brazenly flaunt her bare rack at Yuuji, less than 10 minutes into it, its rather mind-numbing.
* FirstGirlAfterAll: Sachi. In her route, it is revealed she and Yuuji were childhood friends.
* FirstGirlWins: A case of this trope can be made for either Amane, Makina or Sachi if you go for their route. Amane and Makina are the first girls of the main 5 introduced by the game and that Yuuji sees on his first day at Mihama, while Sachi is both the first girl to properly introduce herself to him and also doubling as being FirstGirlAllAlong as she was Yuuji's childhood friend.
* FirstNameBasis
** Yuuji starts using Yumiko's first name as a contrast to her HeyYou attitude so that she's forced to compromise and have both use last names.
** Yuuji also always refers to the principal by her first name. So, no, he does not treat her with a great deal of open respect.
* ForegoneConclusion: The flashbacks in each route tell the player how it ends beforehand.
* {{Foreshadowing}}
** Amane mentions in passing that she has trouble keeping weight off because her body adapted to starvation conditions and keeps trying to pack on additional fat. Obviously, this leads somewhere unpleasant.
** Yuuji has a tendency to steer converstions towards useless military trivia, the anecdotes about his military training or gruesome war stories, much to his audience's dismay. When (on Makina's route) he discusses with Amane about what skills he should teach to Makina, he mentions surviving the jungle for weeks with little equipment, to his biggest suprise Amane actually agrees with him on that one. [[spoiler:If you read Amane's route before, you know exactly why she might find that usefull.]]
** When the group begins talking about friends inside your head, Michiru's interest is instantly piqued. She's disappointed when they say they're just talking about imaginary friends.
*** On the same scene, when Michiru's temper explodes and she declares she'll "blow this building sky-high", Sachi immediately points out that would be only possible with the aid of some serious explosives. [[spoiler:To help her face her mental issues in her route, Yuuji uses exactly that kind of explosive to help her blow up the academy as a result of Sachi's extreme solution to Michiru's request of eliminating an upcoming test.]]
** Reliant on Yumiko's route at least being played second, if not last, but in all other routes, Yumiko is shown to have some unexplained power over the campus's decisions, as well as having more knowledge about the other students than even Yuuji. [[spoiler:It's only revealed in her own route that this is because she's the daughter of the owner of Mihama and would realistically have access to all the information on all the others as well as being a huge deciding factor in the building built specifically for her.]]
* FridgeLogic: The concept of the trope is explained InUniverse [[spoiler:by Kazuki to Amane]] as "The reminiscence effect" during her flashback, where the analysis of the information becomes easier after some time has passed, after the brain creates new connections at the processing of the memory.
* GeneralFailure: Otsuka ignores subordinates, earns their contempt and wastes men on frivolous and inadvisable strategies. Other departments soon refuse to allow him to use their special field operatives, leaving him with civilian intelligence operatives. While Yuuji is dealing with him and his incompetent subordinates, he doesn't even get the dignity of serious BGM.
* GenreDeconstruction: The series can easily be seen as this for subverting many of the common tropes of a high school harem series. For instance, instead of the main character being an insecure, easily flustered idiot who can't talk to girls properly and doesn't have much common sense, Yuuji is a hyper-competent, matter-of-factually badass and doesn't get embarrassed by the girls antics and advances. If Tropes come up, they are usually mocked immediately. [[spoiler:It helps that he is a ChildSoldier with extensive experience as an assassin, military training and service with the US Marine Corps, and has had sex with adult women already in his youth.]]
* GildedCage: [[spoiler:Makina and Yumiko lived in one before being forced out. Yumiko considers Mihama to be one, but is happy to be there.]]
* GladToBeAliveSex: Subverted and played with in Amane's route. [[spoiler:After surviving the encounter with Sakashita Keiji, Amane makes a face that Yuuji better describes as a "special case" face that is a third option to the "you can kiss" and "you can't kiss" faces. Yuuji then tells her to wait until they're back at the dorm, because even though he's pretty much MadeOfIron, even Yuuji can't handle sex right after being shot multiple times by a shotgun.]]
* GoodParents
** Amane's parents are implied to genuinely care for her and wish her the best. Although they are mostly passed over, Amane only ever says good things about them.
** Sachi's parents as well. [[spoiler:Despite them focusing a lot more on their job for slightly over a year, they never had any ill intentions and only wished the best for Sachi.]]
* GratuitousEnglish: Makina and Michiru often slip into gratuitous English statements marked with < > brackets so you can tell without listening to her actual speech. Makina lived abroad a little when she was younger and Michiru is just sort of spacey. They're both clearly terrible at it, though.
-->Yuuji: Tell me something. Why do you keep ending your sentences with little bursts of awkward English?
* GreenEyedMonster: Played for laughs in some of the routes. They even have a council of sorts to debate about Yuuji and the girl of the route in question.
* HeadPet: Thanks to Yuuji's influence, Kittymeow decides that Michiru's head makes for a good perch. After awhile, she doesn't always notice his presence.
* HeirClubForMen: [[spoiler:Everyone in Yumiko's family hated her for not being a boy.]]
* HellIsThatNoise: The clicking sound of Yumiko's boxcutter, meaning that you managed to piss her of royally.
* HopeSpot: [[spoiler:Every time things seemed to be getting better in Yumiko's backstory, someone cruel would ruin things. Starting to get along with her mother while her health improves? Her father has a son and begins making preparations to divorce her mother. Takes her back in and acts calm and fatherly? The son died and he suddenly has no heir. Just more manipulation. Try to talk to her new friend about it? Overhear her talking behind her back and laughing at her.]]
** [[spoiler:In Amane's bad end, Yuuji's at a disadvantage after having taken a couple of shotgun blasts, and eye-to-eye with the barrel. Amane rushes our of the bushes, stabbing the gunman...only to get shot and beaten to death before the man finally goes down.]]
* IllGirl: After giving birth to Yumiko, her mother's poor health kept her bedridden for some time and unable to bear another child.
* ImAHumanitarian
** [[spoiler:The girls of the basketball club accident briefly considered eating the corpse of her dead friend, but that was a moral taboo that, even in the situation they were, they weren't willing to break. Then the captain and teacher harvested Komori's dead body anyway and the other girls pretended not to know. Amane didn't realize, but Kazuki kept her from eating anyway]]. After all this, [[spoiler:cruel classmates decided Amane did it anyway and started calling her cockroach.]]
** And played for laughs during Sachi's route. Makina offhandedly comments that Amane is going to "eat" Yuuji, and Sachi promptly starts to list "helpful" advice on which parts would be tastier.
* ImprobablyFemaleCast: Every SINGLE important person in Yuuji's life, aside from a few off-screen past friendships with fellow soldiers, is a woman, as is 95% of the relevant cast. Shades of this aren't that unusual in Eroge, but this one goes so far out of its way that it is almost silly. It doesn't help that pretty much every other male character is portrayed as incompetent, obstructive, evil or dead.
* InformedAttribute: During Amane's flashback, everyone in the basketball club is stated to have been [[spoiler:in different stages of severe malnutrition,]] but none of them have different sprites from the beginning of the sequence until the end of it, including the [=CGs=].
** Probably a case of UnreliableNarrator - Amane has chosen to forget how [[spoiler:miserable and terrifying]] they looked in the end, and to remember them as the teammates they were before the crash. [[spoiler:Comparatively, you can see the ''inhuman'' way the teacher looks like after being found out. His skin is darkened, his bones stand out clearly, and he's having shining red eyes as he chases after the girls. Is it any wonder Kazuki calls them ''oni'', the man-eating ogres?]]
* {{Jerkass}}: Yumiko's father is a domineering, corrupt businessman [[spoiler:who tries to manipulate his daughter with fake kidnapping attempts followed by real ones when Yuuji defends Yumiko properly. Her mother's family is little better.]]
* JustFollowingOrders: [[spoiler:An excuse for Makina's servants not helping her when she was part of the Irisu main family.]]
* KidsAreCruel: Several backstories are filled with at most two decent child aged characters: Namely, the girl narrating it and another girl who was their friend.
* LapPillow: One of the first things Yuuji is able to make Sachi get interested in is a lap pillow after they walk past some young lovers doing the same.
* LastGirlWins: Yumiko, if the player is going for her route.
* LastSecondEndingChoice: The routes have only one branch within themselves. One lead to a generally Bad End the other to the Good End. Generally, these choices occur within around the last five percent of the story and are at best really obvious which is the right choice or at worst may require you to think about what the point of the story was.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall
**
-->'''Amane:''' But by now, I'm pretty much typecast as the [[LovableSexManiac big-tits slut character]], you know? Can't go abandoning my niche this late in the game.
** When Yuuji [[spoiler:takes Michiru to meet her heart donor's parents,]] he comments that it's "not so far as all that. It'll feel like we only left three seconds ago..." roughly the time it takes for the screen to transition.
* LethalChef: There isn't really one in particular, though Yumiko does have on splendid failure to her name during her route. However, Amane does share her thoughts on the matter: Anyone can cook if they avoid the temptation to improvise and just follow the recipe properly. If someone fails at cooking something, they probably tried getting clever or inventive.
* LightningGlare: More like a laser glare, but between Yumiko and Michiru (complete with [[AnimalMotif animals in the background]]).
* LimitedWardrobe: There's clothing for school uniforms and generally one set of casual clothing. In a girl's route, you might see something like Michiru dressing up a little or Sachi wearing normal clothing, but that's it. For Sachi, it's a small plot point: She was asked to wear maid clothes, so she wears them all the time.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: There's a long underlying theme about it in Makina's route. Namely, Yuuji depended on Asako to remain something resembling human and when he starts taking care of Makina realizes it was probably the same for her as well. In the present, he gets into a symbiotic relationship with Makina that is more based on need than love.
* LoopholeAbuse:
** Sachi always does what she's told, but when Yuuji tells her to not tell Amane about the kiss on the cheek JB planted on him at the school gate. She sends Amane a mail with the subject "I can't say a thing" and the message "And I didn't see a thing". The thing is, she attached a picture of the moment in the message as well.
** During Sachi's route, Yuuji says in his inner monologue that sometimes Sachi cuts sentences of the others in the middle, changing the subject when she senses that they will ask something too troublesome from her.
* MagicSkirt: Kind of a inversion here. During Michiru's route, her skirt, instead of hiding anything, appears to be kept unnaturally up by an unseen force for the sole purpose of flashing Yuuji during their scene in the dorm's vacant room.
* MementoMacguffin: At the end of Amane's route, her granddaughter shows her the present that Yuuji gave her. Yuuji originally got it from Amane, who laughs inwardly when she sees it considering that [[spoiler:she put her pubic hair inside it.]]
* TheMerch: [[invoked]] While watching a show called Tunafishman, they try selling a transformation belt item during the commercial. Except Tunafishman doesn't transform and he's incapable of wearing a belt since he's a fish on legs. Yuuji is oddly susceptible to these ploys.
* MercyKill: Considered, but averted. [[spoiler:The heart donor girl's father considered turning off her life support, but couldn't bring himself to do it.]]
* MistakenForGay: Thanks to Yuuji's perfectly straightforward explanation, Sakaki comes to the conclusion that Makina and Michiru [[ItMakesSenseInContext are engaging in bondage play]]. Didn't even really have to be particularly misleading.
* MookChivalry: Lampshaded since to someone like Yuuji it makes no sense. [[spoiler:Three martial artists and five regular guys try to kidnap Yumiko on her father's orders, but since it's just to intimidate her the martial artists came one at a time]]. It makes him suspicious.
* NoDeadBodyPoops: When [[spoiler:the newly rechristened Kittymeow gets hit by a car]] the heat and prior injuries sustained cause bowel failure quickly after death, just to make the scene that much uglier.
* NoNameGiven: Zig-zagged for the girl that [[spoiler:supplied Michiru's new heart]]. When asked early on, she quite clearly refuses to answer since [[spoiler:she feels that she's not really supposed to be here at all. We do learn her family name is Gardiner, and the manga adaptation of Michiru's route reveals her first name is Lisa.]]
* NonAnswer: When Amane asked [[spoiler:Kazami Kazuki]] if she was scared, her answer was basically 'I sorta figured this might happen ahead of time.' No yes or no is forthcoming.
* NonSequiturCausality
** Yumiko's route only gets going because her father decides to force her to be his heir. Notably, Yumiko doesn't have any actual route flags but is rather the default if no other route flag has been tagged by this point.
** In Michiru's route, everyone suddenly moves out for the summer, giving her and Yuuji two weeks alone to have a fake relationship. Similarly, she only really adopts Kittymeow in this route.
* NoodleIncident: Used as a threat against Chizuru. He refuses to elaborate on what he'll do, only that it will leave Chizuru begging for mercy and that it left JB in tears once.
* NoPartyLikeADonnerParty: [[spoiler:During the bus crash in Amane's route, after two weeks of starving, the captain and Mr. Ochi were forced to start feeding the other girls one of the dead girls to help them recover. Kazuki knew and refused. Amane didn't know but passed because Kazuki wouldn't eat it. Everyone else knew and complied willingly. In a nod to realism, this got them all killed due to intestinal diseases based on their weakened immune systems.]]
* NotADate: In Michiru's route, Yuuji slightly relents on his tough love strategy and allows Michiru to come on an afternoon run with him and very clearly doesn't think of it as a date. Despite knowing his exercise routine and that he surely means it, she gets all dressed up, arrives three hours early and has a cat on her head.
* OddlyVisibleEyebrows: All the characters have them.
* PaintingTheMedium: When the rest of the class praise Sachi for not refusing a single one the requests ever since she entered Mihama, Yuuji remarks that you could practically see the question marks floating around her head. Guess what is the animation during this scene?
* ParentalIncest: Yuuji is baffled because Makina's idea of Yuuji as a father figure sounds more like him being her boyfriend. Since his own father was less than stellar, he lacks the experience to call her out on it.
* ParentalMarriageVeto: Attempted by Amane's dad. Yuuji beat him up and considered himself the winner of Amane's hand in marriage.
* ParentsAsPeople: Unlike most of the rest of the cast, Sachi's backstory is not filled with terrible people. Indeed, Sachi has perhaps the best parents in the story, but as they grew more successful they had less time for her. They still tried, but they were exhausted. They even thought they were doing it for her since they didn't really get her lack of material desires.
* PragmaticAdaptation: The anime changes the endings to the routes, most notably Yumiko's and Makina's, to weave them into one story arc.
* RandomEventsPlot: The common route.
* RealityEnsues
** Some emotional and mental traumas will never go away. Ever. You can learn to deal with them better, but they're not going to just magically vanish, nor will the consequences they've placed upon your life.
** Being a private investigator is really boring.
** In true action hero style Yuuji tends to shrug of any kind of damage he suffers during the heat of battle. A behavior that usually have serios repercussions, ranging from simply spending several weeks recuperating to [[spoiler:costing him an entire arm, or even his life]] depending on the ending, gunshot wounds are no joke.
** Picking a fight with two speacially trained agents, alone with nothing but limited self-defense knowledge and absloutely no experience (even if you have the element of suprise) instead of trying to escape is probably not going to end well. [[spoiler:Makina tries exactly that, earns her two shots in the back.]]
** Contrary to what action movies lead you to believe vehicles don't tend to blow up in huge balls of fire when they crash, [[spoiler:as pointed out by Kazuki to Amane, when their school bus drives of a cliff and crashes into a ravine.]]
* RightBehindMe: The girls decide to get friendlier with Yumiko, which they immediatelly turn into an idiotic contest. They mess with her until they accidently knock her book out of her hand, ending at the top of her. After leaving the classroom, they announce the winner: Michiru. Who gleefully boasts about her victory, claiming the accidental book trick was actually her cunning plan. Guess who is standing behind her getting ready for bloody revenge?
* RunningGag: Early on, Yuuji taunts Makina about her poor English by asking her to pronounce "anomalocaris". Throughout the rest of the game, whenever Makina gets tongue-tied (in English or in Japanese), she will spontaneously shout some mispronunciation of "anomalocaris". The final time this happens, she actually gets the pronunciation correct, apparently by accident.
* SchoolgirlLesbians: During [[spoiler:the bus crash]] there were a number of somewhat suspect girl pairs, which gave Amane the idea of teasing [[spoiler:Kazami Kazuki]] by flirting with her.
* ShapedLikeItself: A crowbar is most certainly "crowbar-esque".
-->'''Makina:''' "The age old mystery has finally been resolved."
* SharingABody: [[spoiler:For the resolution of Michiru's route, the arrangement is that Michiru and the American heart donor girl will share their body.]]
* ShootTheDog: Yuuji is ready to do what he's gotta do if it means the happiness of the girl he loves. [[spoiler:When he's had enough of Irisu Kiyoka causing Makina trouble and realizing she'll stop at nothing to get Makina out of the way for her personal goals, Yuuji decides the bitch's gotta go.]]
* ShoutOut: There are few to ''Franchise/{{Gundam}}''. Amane reads a women's magazine in which one writer compares fellatio to an MS-05 Zaku II (ItMakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext), and after a few days away from the academy with Yuuji, Makina starts to quote "[[Anime/MobileSuitGundam0083StardustMemory Solomon! I have returned!]]", which Yumiko (of all people) interrupts and tells her to keep the nuclear weapons to herself.
* ShownTheirWork: It's easier to count the amount of times they ''didn't'' put work into learning about something before describing it.
* ShowWithinAShow: "Tunafish Man" and "Professor Dave"
* ShutUpKiss: Yuuji muses that this is the one way to quiet a noisy woman, but sadly it carries its own set of consequences.
* SickeninglySweetHearts: Amane and Yuuji get a reputation for this largely because Yuuji figures he might as well just go along with whatever Amane is saying.
* SleepsInTheNude: In the first episode of the anime, Kazami is shown sleeping in the buff and [[HomeNudist even goes through his morning routine without putting any clothes on]], with the camera staying [[ShouldersUpNudity above his waist]] most of the time.
* SpoiledBrat: Makina is a fairly nice kid at heart even if she can be obnoxious. Her little sister Sarina, however, is demanding and entitled. Makina has nothing but pity for her, though, because she remembers being like that herself and knows it's not Sarina's fault.
* SpotTheImpostor: In the common route, Yuuji has to go find [[spoiler:Michiru after she nearly collapses]]. Upon seemingly finding her, he doesn't recognize her at all and says as much. [[spoiler:Not!Michiru]] admits as much and is surprised to see anyone managed to call her out on it. It's probably especially surprising since it was done purely through body language.
* TakeThat: Yuuji states several times that Japanese people are too conservative, and that is not always a good thing, and Japan is such a peaceful country that some things wouldn't even be thinkable in other parts of the world, such as a defenseless girl sleep on a park bench undisturbed for such a long time.
* TapOnTheHead: Makina attempts to knock out Michiru with some well-placed karate chops, but it just hurts. Yuuji the martial artist/assassin/whatever kindly informs her that [[AvertedTrope not only does this not work, but you can cause severe irreparable damage like this]].
* ThereAreNoTherapists: Some of the girls have issues that would be genuinely difficult to tackle in therapy, but no attempt seems to have ever been made. Sachi and Michiru in particular have pretty clear and obvious diagnoses, but when they stopped being so troublesome everyone just went 'Well, looks cured enough to me!'
* ThirdOptionAdaptation: The anime adaptation takes the premise of how ''Grisaia no Meikyuu'' handled the ''Kaijitsu'' plot, by following a path not explored in ''Kajitsu'' VN itself[[note]]In which Yuuji solved everyone's problems, but does not appear to have romantically committed himself[[/note]], and makes said path a reality. However, Yumiko's and Makina's arcs in the anime also received additional changes.
* ThousandYardStare: Happens after Yumiko and Sachi search for how to make Sachi [[spoiler:make Yuuji have sex with her.]]
* ThreesomeSubtext: In a bizarre sense. [[spoiler:For Michiru's ending, she's sharing a body with the America heart donor girl and they're basically both always in control. So what exactly does this say about their relationship? According to her 'Your boyfriend is my boyfriend too!']]
** Probably subverted: [[spoiler:the original Michiru retorts 'Yuuji's only mine!' to which the donor girl responds that she's going to sleep, and the narration explains that they have learned new tricks like this. So it seems that Yuuji and Michiru can spend intimate time and that the donor girl is willing to step aside to let it happen.]]
* TooMuchInformation
** When Amane launches into a spiel about oral sex in front of Yumiko, the latter's eyes start glazing over while she makes it quite clear she wants Amane to just stop talking about it already.
** Happens when Yumiko tries to teach Sachi [[spoiler:how to get Yuuji to have sex with her]]. It ends awfully for the both of them.
* TranslationConvention: The girl that [[spoiler:Michiru got her heart from]] was an American, not Japanese, but all the conversations she overheard were Japanese. She says that there would be no point to [[spoiler:talking to her parents again]] because of this fundamental difference between her circumstances then and now. [[spoiler:Yuuji ignores her complaints and takes her to see them again anyway]]. Not that it matters much, since [[spoiler:the mother in question knows how to speak Japanese.]]
* {{Understatement}}: Yuuji describes the 'friend of his father' that took him in as someone that was a bit of a bad guy and profited off exploiting soft people. International terrorist, murderer and pedophile would be a more accurate description.
* {{Utsuge}}: The setting revolves around a school for troubled students that have at least one major crippling issue that hinders a successful integration into normal society and their anxieties/regrets regarding it.
* WhamEpisode:
** In episode 4 of the anime, [[spoiler:Kittymeow/Meomwel dies after being hit by a car.]]
** In Episode 6, [[spoiler:Yumiko fakes her own death.]]
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids
** InUniverse, Yuuji is appalled during the cheesy kids show he's watching with Makina and Sachi. The hero and villain are themed around beef and fish respectively and fight by tearing their flesh off and attacking each other with it.
** InUniverse again, there's a show called Professor Dave's Amazing Animals. While the second half is usually a serious, emotional story about an animal, the first half is described as extreme, cheap thrills. The episode shown has him carrying a bloody part of a cow ''and having the shark bite his hand'' so he can show how to get away with the least injuries. Yuuji mentions that there should be a notice saying not to try this at home, but figures that anyone who tries in the first place should be chained to a hospital bed. Yes, this is aimed at children.
* AWizardDidIt: [[spoiler:Michiru's split personality could be very easily explained as her having Dissociative Identity Disorder and actually fits the ailment pretty well. The flashback could've been explained as something that was created as an explanation for why she has a second personality as opposed to an unrealistically strong cell memory, too]]. But nope, the finale of that route makes it so that the only thing that makes any sense is magic.
* WrongGenreSavvy: When Yuuji wakes up in the morning after first sleeping with [[spoiler:Makina]], finding that she was gone from the room, he fully expects that she was going to [[spoiler:face her mother]]. After a few moments, he hears her making quite a fuss in the dorm lobby, not even thinking about that.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Amane's is magenta, Sachi's is pink and Yumiko's is purple, but may be intended to be seen as black. Yet somehow Michiru's (dyed) blond hair is supposed to be a foreigner-only thing.

* AnAesop
* BabiesEverAfter:
* BerserkButton:
* BlandNameProduct: [[Website/{{Yahoo}} Yohoo!]], [[Website/EBay E-Day]]
%%* BlatantLies: "I will insist to the very end that this is an ordinary school.
* BrickJoke:
* BringMyBrownPants:
* DistantFinale:
* ExactWords:
* FakingTheDead
* FirstNameBasis
* {{Foreshadowing}}
* GoodParents
* ImAHumanitarian
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall
* LoopholeAbuse:
* NonSequiturCausality
* RandomEventsPlot: The common route.
* RealityEnsues
* TooMuchInformation
* WhamEpisode:
** In episode 4 of the anime, [[spoiler:Kittymeow/Meomwel dies after being hit by a car.]]
** In Episode 6, [[spoiler:Yumiko fakes her own death.]]
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids

Two sequels to the game have been released: ''VisualNovel/TheLabyrinthOfGrisaia'' in 2012, and ''VisualNovel/GrisaiaNoRakuen'' in 2013.

* FamilyUnfriendlyAesop: InUniverse, people sometimes learn some pretty twisted lessons.
** Adult women have been teaching these to Yuuji throughout the years. Two shining examples are that you should lie to women when the truth is tricky or that it's not so bad being a replaceable cog in the machine.
-->Women aren't really eager to learn the ugly truth. Even if they know you're lying, they'll choose to accept the deception as long as they have a reason to do so.
** Not too long before the story began, Michiru decided that she had learned the lesson that [[spoiler:if the real you sucks, fake a new personality. Better that way, right?]] The story seems to agree to an extent as well.

The story is in large parts a romance, but many routes actually set up further events based on Yuuji's own abused backstory and presumed dead sister. While interacting with the girls, he is liable at any moment to be called away to his special part time 'cleaning' jobs at only a moment's notice. His military regimen also puts him slightly at odds with the girls, making it unclear how well he can truly integrate himself into a normal lifestyle.

Skip forward about half a dozen scenes and Sachi interrupts Chizuru as prompted and walks off, much to her confusion.

** Yuuji's hand-to-hand combat skills are way over the top, but his actual techniques and strategies are very realistic. In fact, when he teaches Makina some basic self-defense techniques, he doesn't teach her martial arts but ''actual self-defense techniques'', focusing overall on running away from your attacker and finding a safe place to hide from them.
** In Yumiko's route, Yuuji immediately realizes the thugs that have been sent after her are just trying to scare her, not actually kidnap her, because they're sticking to MookChivalry and attacking one at a time. When serious fights later end up happening, all the thugs rush in at once.
