Added DiffLines:

* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In Miles's flashback, he helps an old woman by convincing her deceased grandson's spirit to stop haunting her house. In later episodes, Miles's psychic powers are explicitly limited to reading the final thoughts and actions of a dead body he has access to, the way he does with Naomi on the Island, and he pointedly dismisses the idea of communicating with actual spirits as impossible.

* CallBack: The scene where Jack tells a disbelieving Miles that his people have him surrounded, and Sayid and Juliet outflank him from the bushes, recalls the scene from "[[{{Recap/LostS02E11TheHuntingParty}} The Hunting Party]]" where the Others surrounded Jack and his group and lit torches to prove they were outnumbered, reflecting how the survivors' survival skills on the Island have improved to put them on the same level as the Others.

'''Season 4, Episode 2'''

!Confirmed Dead
In flashbacks, the remains of Oceanic 815, with all passengers confirmed dead on board, are found at the bottom of the ocean. A physicist named Daniel Faraday watches a news broadcast about the story and cries, but does not understand why. Miles Straume visits a woman and helps clear the spirit of her dead son from her home. Charlotte Lewis, an archaeologist, finds the remains of a polar bear wearing a DHARMA Initiative collar in the Sahara Desert. Frank Lapidus, watching the Oceanic story on the news, calls an information hotline and tells them that the man they have said is the pilot is not really him, and that he knows this because he was supposed to be flying Oceanic 815. Naomi meets with Abaddon, and expresses skepticism about these people making up the freighter's science team.

On the Island, a helicopter flown by Lapidus is caught in a storm, with Daniel, Miles and Charlotte bailing out with parachutes at the last minute. Daniel is found by Jack and Kate. He introduces himself and asks for their assistance in tracking down the rest of the team. They find Miles, who tells them Naomi's last words were a coded distress message and demands to be taken to her body. When he gets to it, he confirms that she was killed by Locke and that he is no longer with the survivors. The group discovers that Locke has Charlotte. They find Frank, who has landed the helicopter safely.

Locke brings his group to where the Cabin should be, but it has vanished. They find Charlotte, and give her tracking device to Vincent to send her team on a wild goose chase. Ben steals a gun from Karl and shoots Charlotte, but she is saved by a bulletproof vest. Locke is about to execute Ben, but stops when Ben informs them of information about the freighter, and that he has a spy on the boat.

----
!Tropes in this episode include:
* AcePilot: Lapidus proves himself to be one of these when he lands a helicopter on the Island in the middle of a raging storm.
-->'''Miles:''' Hey, hey, Lapidus, where's the chopper? Where did it crash?
-->'''Frank:''' Crash? The hell kind of pilot do you think I am? I put her down safe and sound, right over there.
* BulletproofVest: Charlotte is saved by one when she is shot by Ben. It's played somewhat more realistically than most examples, since she is winded for a long time afterwards and claims that it feels like there's a cinder block on her chest, but she is ultimately no worse for wear.
* CovertDistressCode: Miles reveals that Naomi's last words from the previous episode, "Tell my sister I love her", were a code that the freighter team were supposed to use to signal that they were speaking under duress, and that Naomi doesn't really have a sister.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: The polar bear skeleton Charlotte finds in Tunisia hints at an important storyline later in the season.
* ForgotToGagHim: Ben effortlessly gets under the skin of almost all of Locke's group, to the point that even Sawyer, who warns Karl not to fall for his mind games, is on the verge of killing him.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Ben is on the receiving end of [[RunningGag yet another]] one of these from Saywer after he shoots Charlotte.
* RagTagBunchOfMisfits: The freighter science team is made up of an alcoholic ConspiracyTheorist, an AbsentMindedProfessor physicist, a {{Jerkass}} with the ability to communicate with the dead, and a plucky AdventurerArchaeologist turned anthropologist. Lampshaded by Naomi.
-->'''Naomi:''' This is a high risk covert op in unstable territory. It's dodgy enough without having to babysit a headcase, ghost buster, anthropologist and a drunk.
* SayingTooMuch: Hurley accidentally reveals that he has seen the Cabin when Locke is looking for it.
-->'''Locke:''' There's a cabin I have to go to.
-->'''Hurley:''' I thought the cabin was back that way.
-->'''Locke:''' What did you say, Hugo?
-->'''Hurley:''' [[BlatantLies I, er, thought you were talking about the airplane cabin.]]
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney: Charlotte bribes her way onto a secret archaeological dig in Tunisia.
* ShoutOut: Daniel introduces himself to Jack and Kate by saying "[[Film/ANewHope I'm Daniel Faraday. I'm here to rescue you.]]"
* SpottingTheThread: Lapidus, a personal friend of Oceanic 815 pilot Seth Norris, realizes that the body that was recovered from the plane at the bottom of the ocean is not his when he sees that there's no wedding ring on his finger. The real Norris was HappilyMarried to his high school sweetheart from the age of 19 and never took his wedding ring off.
