Carmichael becomes interested in the case and does some digging. She finds out that Rudnick and Michaels used a pharmaceutical company's new model of electrolyte pump during the surgery, even though the hospital hadn't approved for use on patients. They allowed company sales rep Glynis Ward, who has no medical training, to operate the pump instead of a registered nurse. Rudnick, Michaels, and Ward are all charged with murder but the maximum sentence the judge will allow for is criminally negligent homicide. This is so difficult to prove that [=McCoy=] wants to grant a plea deal; but Carmichael thinks the case is serious enough to prosecute.

Ken Slattery, a retired divorce lawyer, is found violently beaten and comatose. Briscoe and Green soon find out that the culprit is his former client Kelly [=McFarland=]. She lashed out at him because she believed her ex-husband, Dr. Weiss, had paid off Slattery to lie in court and help him win the case. Weiss is in partnership with two other doctors, Rudnick and Michaels. They are currently being sued over the death of a patient named Maureen Gerard, who died during routine surgery. Weiss is trying to remove himself from the business partnership as quickly as possible - indicating he knows insurance wouldn't cover the suit.

Michaels offers to testify against Rudnick in exchange for a plea deal, but when Carmichael says no, he disappears. She doesn't think the case is strong enough for the jury to convict; but then Michaels is found dead in an apparent suicide. Carmichael and [=McCoy=] successfully petition a judge to allow testimony from Michaels' lawyer on the grounds that Michaels intended to share it before his death. The lawyer testifies that Michaels and Rudnick had accepted a large backhander from the pharmaceutical company to get the hospital to approve the new pump for routine use. Rather than face a trial for the more serious charge of depraved indifference to life, Rudnick and Ward accept plea bargains.

!!!This episode contains examples of:
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: Rudnick, Weiss, and Michaels run a gynecology practice that's designed to rush through as many patients as possible and over-charge them.
* DeadlyDoctor: Subverted. By all accounts Rudnick and Michaels are genuinely skilled doctors; the problem is their desire for profit over patient safety.
* DrivenToSuicide: Seemingly what happens to Michaels when Carmichael won't grant him a plea bargain.
* InnocentInaccurate: Slattery's very young grandson finds him unconscious but thinks he is just "taking a nap."
* ItsAllAboutMe: Carmichael finds Dr. Michaels' attitude to be this, which causes her to say no to a plea bargain unless he accepts jail time and the loss of his licence.
* KarmaHoudini: Weiss has got away with malpractice for years through bribes and calling in favors. He seemingly doesn't suffer any consequences from Maureen Gerard's death - since he didn't perform her surgery (thus can't be charged with her death) and was already planning to leave the partnership.
* RippedFromTheHeadlines: Based on the death of Lisa Smart in near-identical circumstances to those featured in the episode, which led to a new law requiring more information about doctors to be available to their patients.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: Slattery was a personal friend of Rudnick and offered him legal advice. Subsequently Rudnick, Weiss, and Michaels all used Slattery to get out of various legal woes.
