* Probably one of the biggest examples of 2013 happened at Wrestling/SummerSlam. It was Wrestling/DanielBryan going up against then WWE Champion Wrestling/JohnCena for the title. After a long, hard fought match, Bryan pulls off what people thought he never could when he entered the company, and defeats Cena with a new finisher to finally claim the WWE Championship. He's celebrating, Wrestling/TripleH is congratulating him (he was Special Ref for the match), the streamers are coming down. History has been made...then Wrestling/RandyOrton storms down with the Money in the Bank briefcase. The good news for Bryan at the time was that A) he still was healthy enough to at least attempt to fight off Orton and B) Orton had pretty much reminded everyone every week that he would probably cash in at Wrestling/SummerSlam. Orton seemed to agree and started to walk away, and thus Bryan resumed his celebration. THEN Wrestling/TripleH turns him around and [[FaceHeelTurn Pedigrees him]]. Orton hands in the briefcase, pins Bryan, becomes the new Champion and thus [[Wrestling/TheAuthority a new Corporation-like faction]] was born.

Naturally, said faction did this to a truly intolerable degree, finding whatever tactic they could to screw everyone out of a happy ending.

* ''Series/Glee'': Rachel and Finn have a falling-out when it comes out that Finn slept with Santana (before Finn and Rachel were dating) and didn't tell Rachel, upsetting her. For about a week, they're fighting (although they do ''not'' break up), before they make it up again. And as they happily reunite, they agree to have no more secrets, and so Rachel reveals that while she and Finn were fighting, she kissed his best friend (the same friend who his last girlfriend cheated with). Suffice to say, the happy resolution does not last.

*A perfect example of this trope is Wrestling/LivMorgan in early 2024 when she returned from injury. Swearing revenge on her former friend and tag team partner Wrestling/RheaRipley for causing said injury that put her out for 6 months, Liv enters the Wrestling/RoyalRumble at #30 only to come up heartbreakingly short as she finishes runner-up for the 2nd year in a row, this time to Wrestling/Bayley after the aforementioned Ripley had dashed her dreams the year before. The next month at Wrestling/EliminationChamber, Liv is entered into the titular match with the winner going on to face Ripley at Wrestling/WrestleMania but once more suffers utter heartbreak as she finishes runner-up to old rival and EnsembleDarkhorse Becky Lynch. Poor girl just can't catch a break.

It was only the first of two matches the United States had to play in the round-robin final round in order to determine medal placement per the tournament's format of the time. And going into the final round, the United States was already behind the 8-ball, since matches between common opponents from the Group Stage were included. This means the Soviet Union carried over a win over Finland, while the United States carried over a draw with Sweden. The 4-2 win over the Soviet Union on February 22, 1980, only reversed the advantage. The United States would need a win over Finland to secure the gold medal, which they did on February 24, 1980, with a 4-2 victory.
