This doesn't hit the nail on the head. Making fire with two sticks because you read someone doing it in a book is "drawing applied knowledge from fiction", but it's not Genre Savvy.

This is misleading. The idea is that the character in the movie/book etc. is familiar with genre fiction *just like the audience is*. In other words, the character is familiar with REAL LIFE fiction.
