* At the end of the film, when Clive has been humiliated by Spud's success in the war game, his house has gone and he's facing the fact that he's only good for training the Home Guard, he recounts to Theo and Angela how, after the diplomatic incident back in 1902, his superior severely told him off but then invited him to dinner, and he was so downcast that he declined the invitation. Even though he has every reason to resent and dislike Spud, he asks Angela to invite Spud to dinner, out of goodwill and respect for the younger man's initiative.
