* At the start of "Nine Yards of Other Cloth", John recounts the story of Kalu, a monstrous creature, and Hosea Palmer, who went into Kalu's valley to stop its predations. He then passes a grave on which is crudely written "Pray for Hosea Palmer". The heartwarming comes at the end: [[spoiler:after Kalu kills the villain, John realizes that Hosea had stopped its evil by ''befriending'' it. He'd taught it how to write, and when he died, Kalu buried him and wrote the gravestone.]] One of the few times evil is [[spoiler:converted]], not destroyed.
