Since they are not deemed worthy to address him directly, they are required instead to address the floor of his palace, and ask it to convey what they have to say to him via the sole of his slipper; the Pasha in turn asks his slipper to pass on his reply to the floor. Jack, who is posing as a disgraced Janissary, decides to go one better by declaring that he is worthy only to address the dirt within the cracks -- though that threatens to backfire as the Pasha isn't happy at the suggestion there may be dirt on his floor. Jack hastily backtracks, suggesting that it may be a dust-mote he himself brought in on an eyelash.
