* AlasPoorVillain: Masamune is given a rather sympathetic death. In his last moments, he breaks free from the Madness and implicitly tells Tsubaki that, contrary to what her insecurities might tell her, she truly is a strong person.
* BequeathedPower: In Masamune's last moments, he entrusts Tsubaki with the Uncanny Sword, confident that her inner strength will allow her to not fall victim to the bloody path that he took.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: Anyone he possesses gaines black sclerae. His own sclerae go black partway through his fight with his sister as well.
* CainAndAbel: The Cain to Tsubaki's Abel.
* DeathEqualsRedemption: It's clear that, despite the cruel and bloody path that Masamune took in life, Tsubaki still loves him and sees him as her brother. In Masamune's last moments, he was able to [[DyingAsYourself revert to the man he used to be]], allowing Tsubaki to briefly reunite with her brother one last time. After Masamune's death, Tsubaki is shown asking Masamune for guidance on how to help Star, making it clear that she still sees him as the loving brother he used to be.
* DontYouDarePityMe: Part of the reason he resents Tsubaki so much is that he projected his own feelings of self-loathing onto her, interpreting Tsubaki's kind but submissive nature as her looking down on him. When Tsubaki flies into a rage and wildly stabs him to death inside of his soul, Masamune seems at peace. As his body fades away, [[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre he tells her that the tsubaki flower has a wonderful fragrance]].
* DyingAsYourself: When Tsubaki kills him, Masamune breaks free from the Madness in his final moments, telling Tsubaki that the camellia blossom, her namesake, truly does have a lovely fragrance no matter what others might tell her.

When she flies into a rage and attacks him with bloodlust, however, he seems at peace, seeing Tsubaki for who she truly is in his last moments.
* PublicDomainCharacter: His name is based on the famous smith Masamune(in Japan, swords tend to be named after the smith). [[{{Irony}} When Masamune was the one to be said as the peace-loving one in real life.]]

It's heavily implied that Tsubaki sees Star as something of a surrogate to Masamune, with both of them having the same drive to get stronger, and as such she's terrified of the prospect that Star will go down the same path that Masamune did. However, once the spirit inside Tsubaki shows Star the suffering of those who tried and failed to take on the Uncanny Sword, Star resolves not to follow in Masamune's footsteps, but rather to carry on the despair that he and those like him fell victim to, telling Tsubaki that he'll make her brother's dream come true for him.
* StartOfDarkness: It's shown that Masamune set out on his bloody path simply because he desired to become stronger, but didn't have anyone there to stop him from succumbing to the temptation of madness.

A power-hungry Evil Human serial killer, Jack is the first character introduced in the series. Fights with long metal claws attached to his arms.

* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Compared to many other characters, he's really outclassed, but had the deadly potential to become a Kishin. Its implied that he was ''extremely'' close to this point when Maka confronted him.

* StarterVillain: The first Evil Human introduced and actually the very first character to appear on-screen and in-manga.
* UnskilledButStrong: Evil Humans generally don't do much in terms of strategy, preferring straight-forward attacking. in the anime at least, Jack had no strategy, but has agility, speed, and raw power would've made him a ''much'' greater threat if Maka had had less experience when she went after him.
* YourSoulIsMine: As a general rule, Evil Humans generally want to eat more souls so they can get more power.

An evil human in Florence, Italy, who carries a knife and wears a bag over his head. Killed people who went to Emerald Cove.

* AxCrazy: What little characterization he has is envy and childish whining that Demon Weapons and the Meisters who wield them get to kill as many people as they please wehnever they please. This is in spite of the fact that they only kill Evil Humans who have become monsters on their path to becoming Kishin.
* FlatCharacter: He really wasn't given enough time in either the anime or the manga, to establish much characterization.
* InASingleBound: He can jump extremely high, evidenced when he attacks Maka.
* SingleStrokeBattle: He falls victim to this.
* ShoutOut: To Jason Voorhees, what with the Machete, the 13 on his back and the fact that he kills people who come to a cove.
* WhatTheHellHero: He sobs that Demon Weapons and Meisters as a whole get to kill as they please. Maka is quick to point out this is not the case after beating him.

* AwesomeButImpractical: He is ''the'' most powerful weapon in the setting. He can synchronize his soul wavelength with anyone, but he's so immensely annoying that no one can stand being near him.
* BrickJoke: In one of the tales about his past, he managed to get ''[[Literature/SherlockHolmes Watson]]'' arrested. Later, when watching a Sherlock Holmes movie, he ''again'' accuses Watson of being guilty. Watson, [[NoFourthWall on screen]], panics after being accused.
* CaptainErsatz: Excalibur's character design comes straight out of ''Literature/TheMoomins''.
* CatchPhrase: Several times, he starts with "My legend began in/dates back to the 12th century" to then say a bunch of random stuff that has nothing to do with his legend, leaving everyone who listens annoyed.
* CatchphraseInsult: He almost never can say even one sentence without yelling "'''BAKAME/[[YouFool FOOL!]]'''"
* CloudCuckooLander: He tells long stories that go nowhere and end without warning, his list of rules are baffling, and he'll randomly say "BAKA". According to the anime, he was a lot more coherent in King Arthur's day and also had a cool beard. Apparently his sanity is directly proportional to his amount of facial hair. He also has a tendency to stare at insects as they cross his path, sometimes stopping what he's doing to walk over to one. Before calling it a fool.
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight: Towards to the end of the anime, he [[WisdomFromTheGutter gives out some info during the fight against Asura]] and [[spoiler:[[WhatTheHellHero calls Azusa on fighting Asura without a meister]]]]... in between being a CloudCuckoolander of the nth degree.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: [[spoiler:Gives Asura a talking to about honor and emotions in the anime. Asura doesn't seem to mind too much; his response to being called a fool is "aw, I missed you too."]]

The cover spread of chapter 77 possibly shows him alongside Shinigami, Asura, Eibon and The Great Old One of Power, all of whom are confirmed eldritch horrors (second from the left)]].
* ExcaliburInTheStone: Like its namesake's common image, it is first found engraved in stone until Black☆Star releases him. Star soon comes to regret this.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: Meisters who go through the effort of seeking him out will be thrown off by his rather bizarre appearance.
* FearlessFool: He's the only one who isn't afraid of Asura's power. Justified since he is that powerful himself, thus subverting the 'Fool' aspect.
* {{Foil}}: {{Living Weapon}}s Ragnarok and Excalibur. Both have humanoid transformed states and are forceful egotists, but one is dark and the other light. Excalibur is a colossal nuisance who can be removed, but Crona is stuck with Ragnarok the bully forever. Excalibur has phenomenal power in his own right, but Ragnarok's power is mostly potential--he needs [[HumanSacrifice to beef up on souls]] before he can compete with Excalibur.
* TheGadfly: He riles up almost anyone to rage with his quirks, pride and just endless bizarre traits. [[spoiler: Given he represents Madness Through Rage, this is not surprising and he can be be quite civil when need be]].
* HalfDressedCartoonAnimal: It's {{lampshaded}} by Black☆Star that he's naked beneath the waist.
* InfinityPlusOneSword: Is the most powerful weapon in existence... '''''if''''' you're willing to take his absurd crap. Some of the known abilities he grants his wielder are Heavenly Wings, light speed movement, and the ability to slash everything with ''[[StuffBlowingUp gigantic explosions of golden fire]]''. When Liz used him (briefly) in the Book of Eibon, he was able to cut a large hole '''through another dimension'''.
* InformedAbility: Supposedly, Excalibur is the most powerful weapon in all existence. Despite that, he participates in very few fights and doesn't have many onscreen feats to speak of. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] since Excalibur is relentlessly annoying and nobody in their right mind would put up with him.

** Don't talk with him; he will steam roll you with an endless barrage of stories and rules and "FOOL!"
** If you watch the episode where he talks about doing detective work with Franchise/SherlockHolmes, the wallpaper, pictures, and background are ''filled'' of images of him.

* TheLongList: Any meister who wants to wield him must obey a 1,000 rule list and he will recite them in a random order if you ask (or if you don't ask but are nearby.) In his first appearance, Excalibur was willing to cut his list of 1,000 requirements down to 800 in return for being wielded as a weapon by Kid or Star. Presumably, a sufficiently persuasive Meister could negotiate him down to something manageable. [[spoiler: In the Book of Eibon he was willing to lend his power to good guys with no requirements (in the Eibon Chapter Pride, they were too proud to accept his offer)]].
* MultipleChoicePast: The only concrete things are the people who have wielded him and went on to become legends. As for the rest, it jumps all over the place.
** Averted with the reveal that Manga/FireForce is a prequel of Soul Eater, Excalibur revealed to initially be Arthur Boyle's sword brought to life from his original owner's thoughts and Shinra influenced the adolla energy.
* NoSell: In the anime, he is completely unfazed by [[spoiler:the shockwaves of Asura and Death's battle. Even Asura's direct attack that leaves Azusa, Spirit, and Kid battered has no visible effect on him.]]

** Hinted at during the Battle on the Moon arc. His interactions with Shinigami regarding [[spoiler:his apparent death as a result of Kid becoming a full Shinigami]] at least show he's capable of carrying a normal, serious conversation.

Alternately, his quirks exist [[spoiler: because he is a Great Old One, powerful beings whose ''mere existence causes madness!'' Specifically, the Madness Through Rage. Makes sense that he tends to piss off everyone who meets him...]]
* OnlyTheChosenMayWield: DefiedTrope. ''Everyone'' can wield the ultimate legendary sword. The problem is no one can wield him for very long, because Excalibur's personality is so [[SidekickCreatureNuisance unbearably irritating and egotistical]], he drives his partners insane.

** Moments such as when the gang needs his abilities in the Book of Eibon, or Shinigami-sama needs someone on the level [[spoiler:to be there for Kid after he dies]] show he may well buckle down when necessary and can actually stop being annoying for a while.

Given his status as a CloudCuckooLander, this Backstory is obviously questionable.
* RandomEventsPlot: All his stories about his past. Any attempt to connect the events he describes to each other, or to some kind of point or theme, is utterly futile.
* RetCanon: The "Excalibur Song" was originally made for a filler episode in the anime. It eventually found its way into the manga, where Excalibur was able to torment even more people with it.

* SecretTestOfCharacter: Almost every question that comes out of his mouth is a SecretTestOfCharacter...that only makes sense to him.
* ShooOutTheClowns: Inverted. He comes back for the climax in the anime, despite everyone's (both villain and hero) best attempts at ignoring him. In the manga, he invites himself to witness the climax with Shinigami at Death Academy.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Even for his power, he's full of himself. He barely lets other people talk near him.
* SmugSuper: He brags quite a lot, but has every ounce of the power needed to back up his claims. Enough to elevate the worst meister in the school to three-star status simply for wielding him (though the partnership didn't last). Furthermore, [[spoiler: he's a [[EldritchAbomination being of the same nature]] as Shinigami]], it's really not surprising his ego is so inflated.
* SuperPrototype: Lord Death reveals that Eibon, who would continously deny, based his research on making the Demon Weapons using Excalibur. Furthermore, Manga/FireForce reveals that Excalibur existed since the creation of the current reality.
* TalkativeLoon: The singing... and dancing... and ''never shutting up''...
* TalkingWeapon: To everyone's horror, he talks and talks and ''talks'' regardless of what form he's in.
* WorldsStrongestMan: Has been stated several times in the series to be the most powerful weapon ever made, more so than even modern day death scythes, inspiring the creation of the demon weapon race by Arachne in the first place. He even served in the Eight guardians legion alongside Asura and Death centuries before the DWMA was formed and in the anime was unimpressed by the intense battle between Asura and Death (Both were at their strongest by then!). Problem is, he is gainfully aware of it, making him unbearable to pretty much every meister who tries to wield him.

Before the start of the series, he was defeated by Shinigami-sama and [[SealedEvilInACan imprisoned]]. However he is eventually released and begins to spread "madness" throughout the world.

When Tsubaki flies into a rage and wildly stabs him to death inside of his soul, Masamune seems at peace. * GoryDiscretionShot: Subverted, His brutal act of cutting a woman's torso open is shown in shadows on the alley walls. However the freshly-bleeding body is still seen after the act has been done.

* StarterVillain: The first Evil Human introduced and actually the very first character to appear on-screen and in-manga.
* UnskilledButStrong: Evil Humans generally don't do much in terms of strategy, preferring straight-forward attacking. in the anime at least, Jack had no strategy, but has agility, speed, and raw power would've made him a ''much'' greater threat if Maka had had less experience when she went after him.
* YourSoulIsMine: As a general rule, Evil Humans generally want to eat more souls so they can get more power.

An evil human in Florence, Italy, who carries a knife and wears a bag over his head. Killed people who went to Emerald Cove.

* AxCrazy: What little characterization he has is envy and childish whining that Demon Weapons and the Meisters who wield them get to kill as many people as they please wehnever they please. This is in spite of the fact that they only kill Evil Humans who have become monsters on their path to becoming Kishin.
* FlatCharacter: He really wasn't given enough time in either the anime or the manga, to establish much characterization.
* InASingleBound: He can jump extremely high, evidenced when he attacks Maka.
* SingleStrokeBattle: He falls victim to this.
* ShoutOut: To Jason Voorhees, what with the Machete, the 13 on his back and the fact that he kills people who come to a cove.
* WhatTheHellHero: He sobs that Demon Weapons and Meisters as a whole get to kill as they please. Maka is quick to point out this is not the case after beating him.

* SingleStrokeBattle: Seems to be a reoccurring theme with Maka's fights.

* WeHardlyKnewYe: Her soul is swiftly taken by Maka and Soul as the penultimate one before the 100th one required for Soul's upgrade.
