%% The titles for the first seven Dexholders (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal) are canon; they were given to them by Prof. Oak during the GSC chapter. The other eight Dex holders (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Black, White) were given titles in a magazine. Please avoid further Edit Wars.

!!Red -- The Battler/Fighter
->''"Me? I am Red! A Pokédex Owner from Pallet Town! A 'Battler'!"''
[[quoteright:236:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Red_Special.jpg]]
The first protagonist of the series. He starts out as a bit of an overconfident IdiotHero who starts out thinking he's the best. It only takes a quick defeat from Mew to break this mentality and he considers learning and going to Professor Oak where he starts his quest. His first Pokémon is a Poliwag named Poli, while his starter is a Bulbasaur named Saur.
----
* TheAce: By the Yellow Saga, he has fully become this in terms of Pokemon Battling. He’s so much TheAce that the Elite Four had to make sure he was out of the way in order for them to start their plans, as he would have obviously been a SpannerInTheWorks. His debut in a Yellow Arc was a HellYesMoment because of this.
* {{Adorkable}}: Has his moment, which comes from a combination of being quite goofy and a NiceGuy
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Gold all but hero worships him because of his skills and Sapphire essentially considers her ultimate goal to be as {{Badass}} as he is.
* AnimeHair
* {{Badass}}: ''Especially'' during the ''FR/LG'' arc.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Not quite noticeable because he’s normally such a mellow guy, but not a guy you want to anger. Just ask Giovanni and Team Rocket
* BigBrotherMentor: To Gold. It's strongly hinted that he became this when both of them went to Mt. Silver.
* BreakTheHaughty: Downplayed since he was just overconfident, but it takes a single defeat by Mew in the first chapter of the series for this trope to take effect for him.
* BrownEyes -> RedEyesTakeWarning
* CharacterDevelopment: Goes from being an IdiotHero to a slightly HotBlooded [[TheAce ace]].
* DeadpanSnarker: Occasionally
* TheDeterminator: The first seen in the series
* DressingAsTheEnemy: He disguised himself as a TR grunt to get some info.
* FingerlessGloves: Finds a pair which are electric insulated in Silph Co. Subverted in that they're not really fingerless; the material over the fingers are clear.
* FlungClothing: Blue pulled off the TR disguise mentioned above. Red was also pretty much stripped over the course of FRLG.
** There was also the time when he suddenly pulled off his clothes in the RGB arc and jumped into the water in order to convince Green's Pokémon to relax, and when he went into the hot springs as well.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: A combination of Sanguine and Choleric.
* HarmlessFreezing: By Lorelei for about 2 weeks, which lead him to be displayed as a...
** HumanPopsicle: He got better, [[spoiler:but he got terrible frostbite on his wrists and ankles]].
* TheHero
* HesBack: In [[http://jb2448.info/Pokemon_Adventures_24/Ch-284/0_0007 mid-FRLG]]
* HeroicBSOD: In the first chapter of RGB and another one in FRLG.
* TheHerosJourney
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Green, after the other boy’s CharacterDevelopment
* HotBlooded: After growing out of his {{Idiot Hero}} demeanor.
* HotSpringsEpisode: With Sabrina. No, not in that way. Though it did lead to an...
** AccidentalPervert: instance when Sabrina started leaving.
* IdiotHero: He starts off as one in the very beginning of his quest, but soon grows out of it when he becomes a Hot Blooded hero
* [[InvisibleParents Invisible Family]]: He is the only dexholder with no known family.
* KidHero: Naturally all the dex holders count, but in order of appearance Red is the first.
* TheLeader: Type IV/II hybrid of the Kanto Dex holders, and the Dex holders as a whole when they come together.
* MadeOfIron" Holy ''crap''. He's been taking life threatening injuries(poison, Pokémon moves, and had been moving on despite severe ''frostbite'' in the GSC arc) since he was eleven!
* MagneticHero: This kid can make friends with almost everyone, it seems. And even those he does not make friends with consider him a respectable WorthyOpponent.
* MrFanservice: Once he hits his teens, especially with that ShirtlessScene in the [=FRLG=] arc.
* NiceGuy[=/=]EasilyForgiven: He took a frickin' bath with Sabrina, the woman who stole and tortured his Eevee. He did initially suspect her of something, but when she said otherwise he let it go pretty quickly.
** He [[spoiler:accepted Deoxys pretty fast despite the fact it nearly killed all his Pokémon]]. Granted, it could only talk through fighting before.
** Lt. Surge tortured him repeatedly. And what happens when they meet up in the Yellow arc? Red's like, "Yo, what's up?"
** Red forgave Bruno too. Red received a direct kick to the stomach from a Hitmonlee, which was rather hard to swallow, but he still forgave him considering, you know, [[spoiler:''MindControl'']].
** He would probably have forgiven [[spoiler:Giovanni if he found out that he was the one who saved him in said "almost frozen to death situation"]].
** Lorelei who was the one [[spoiler: who encased Red in ice and as a result he got severe frostbite]] but the next time they meet (roughly a few years later), he doesn't even mention it and appears to have forgiven her. Then again, there were more pressing matters at hand and Lorelei did help Red and Blue escape from the Beast Trio after Team Rocket threatened her home.
* NiceHat: Red's hat almost never comes off. [[spoiler:He even swam and bathed in the hot springs with it on. Plus it never came off during all the training and aerial fighting he did in FRLG. To top it off, even when his jacket and shirt had already come off, his hat was still there till the last moment.]]
** There was that one time when his hat came off in RGB at the Safari Zone. It was separated from him for a whole day.
* ObliviousToLove: At first, he doesn't seem to realize that both Yellow and Misty have huge crushes on him. By the end of the GSC arc, he seems to have caught on and feels uncomfortable about resolving it until Gold gave him a way out. Plus he blushed like crazy when it was suggested that all three of them live together.
** CharacterizationMarchesOn: People seem to have forgotten that, during their first meeting, Red once thought that Blue was cute and had a crush on her. Likewise for Misty's maids, and even Misty herself when she first introduces herself to him.
** Red mentions that he shouldn't be focusing on girls after Misty nearly curbstomped him with her Starmie. So maybe his obliviousness is [[SelectiveObliviousness deliberate.]]
* PersonalitySwap: Red and Green's Pokémon in RGB arc.
* RedStringOfFate: With Yellow.
* ShipTease: Yellow, Misty and Blue in various arcs.
* ShirtlessScene: He gets one at the very end of FR/LG.
* SleevesAreForWimps: Since he dumped his jacket in FRLG. Also at the start of said arc, he was walking around without the jacket.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Despite having some elements of IdiotHero, Red actually is more intuitive, surprisingly cunning and savvy that the majority of the known examples. He’s not genius, but he’s far from truly dumb.
* TakenForGranite: He was the only dex holder out of uniform and not holding the Pokédex, which pretty much ruins their guise of being real statues.
* TakeUpMySword: After Red disappeared, Yellow used his Pikachu and Pokédex.
* TakingYouWithMe: In FRLG, [[spoiler: at the end of the Mewtwo vs. Deoxys battle, while Deoxys was grabbing Red, Red insisted that Mewtwo fire the final shot even though he knew that the attack might literally go through him.]]
* WeCanRuleTogether: Twice offered to Red from [[spoiler:Giovanni in RGB and The Elite Four in Yellow saga.]]
** Also, the above offers resulted in the PickOnSomeoneYourOwnSize trope.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Still in bad shape after being frozen by Lorelei, Red has to step down from the Viridian Gym leader's position, and, consequently, was out of action for most of GSC in order to recuperate.
* WorthyOpponent: The top members of Team Rocket (Giovanni, Sabrina, Surge) and The Elite Four (Especially Bruno) consider him this
* WouldntHitAGirl: As shown in the 1st volume when Misty hits him and he doesn't hit back.

!!'''Red's Pokémon'''

!!'''Poli (Nyoro)'''
Red's first Pokémon that he obtained when it was only a Poliwag. Sometime before the series began, he evolved into a Poliwhirl to save a drowning Red. He evolved into a Poliwrath to rescue Red from drowning once more after his Trainer was sent into the water by Lt. Surge.

* AuthorAppeal: Series creator has said that his favorite Pokémon is a Poliwhirl.
* BareFistedMonk: Secondary type.
* MakingASplash: Primary type.
* KillItWithIce: Knows Ice Beam.

!!'''Saur (Fusshi)'''
Red's "starter" Pokémon that was given to him from Professor Oak after proving that he could bond and fight with it. He is a gentle and loyal creature but a powerful and versatile one as well.

* PetalPower

!!'''Pika'''

A mischievous and initially stubborn Pikachu Red caught in Pewter City, Pika is one of Red's most used Pokémon.

* ShockAndAwe
* TraumaInducedAmnesia: Suffers this in the Yellow arc.
* {{Troll}}: Pika likes to act friendly in front of certain people before shocking them.
* [[PoisonousPerson Poisonous Pokémon]]: Knows Toxic.

!!'''Vee (Vui)'''

Once a genetically-tampered Eevee that could evolve and de-evolve into any of the first three Eeveelutions, Vee is now permanently an Espeon, showing its love and trust towards his trainer.

** MakingASplash: As a Vaporeon.
** PlayingWithFire: As a Flareon.
** PsychicPowers: As an Espeon.
** ShockAndAwe: As a Jolteon.

!!Blue Oak (Green Okido) -- The Trainer
->''"Trainers must train and sharpen their own senses, and be as one with the Pokémon in a battle."''
[[quoteright:200:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Blue_Adventures.png]]
He is Professor Oak's grandson and is Red's rival. His first Pokémon is a Scyther, while his starter is a Charmander. The current Viridian City Gym Leader. Does not nickname his Pokémon.
----
* AnimeHair
* AntiHero: Type III at first, before becoming more of a straight-up hero.
* BadassCape: Sports one in the Yellow arc.
* BerserkButton: Harm and imprison his family? He'll only use his Pokémon as a virus to destroy your circuitry, [[{{CrowningMomentOfAwesome}} bypassing any of your predicted inevitable outcomes in the process.]]
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In the first few chapters he acted very much like his counterpart from the games and his anime counterpart Gary from the first season. This changed by the time he appeared in Pokémon Tower and he became a more serious character. (Somewhat [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] by Red: "You're not your old obnoxious self again...you're ''worse!'')
* TheComicallySerious: On occasion, ''especially'' when training Yellow.
* DubNameChange: His and Green's names were switched in the English translation.
* DragonRider: Charizard's technically a fire type but he can count.
* EarlyBirdCameo: His Pokémon know 2nd generation attacks, taught to them by Chuck.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: A combination of Melancholic and Phlegmatic.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: He does this to Red after [[spoiler:Red loses to Deoxys.]]
* [[ParentsInDistress Grandfather In Distress]]: In the RGB and FRLG arcs.
* GreenEyes

* InvisibleParents: At least, he has his grandfather and sister...
** Leading to a case of RaisedByGrandparents.
* {{Jerkass}} [[CharacterDevelopment to]] JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Very much so in the RGB arc.
* TheLancer
* PersonalitySwap: Red and Blue's Pokémon in RGB arc.
* TheRival: To Red in the first saga. He is actually the straightest one among all the rivals.
* ShipperOnDeck: If he ''doesn't'' ship Bill with his sister, he is at least fine with it.
* TheStoic: He's generally the most down to earth of the Dex Holders, except when his [[BerserkButton grandfather is in danger]]...
* TakenForGranite
* TsurimeEyes
* [[WouldHitAGirl Would Hit An Old Lady]]: Towards the beginning of the FRLG arc, to Kimberly.
** Also his battles with Agatha.

[[folder: Green]]
!!Green (Blue)-- The Evolver
->''"I can fool more than silly boys!"''
[[quoteright:200:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Green_Adventures.png]]
She's initially a sneaky thief that just seems to care for money. She is aware of her fanservice-ness, and uses this to her advantage in her cons. That said, she is actually quite competent and can defend herself via Pokémon and or by tricks. Her first Pokémon is a Jigglypuff, while her starter is a Squirtle named Blasty.
----
* ActionGirl: The first one in the series! Though she was more of a sneaky thief.
* AntiHero: Type IV at first, develops into Type II overtime.
* BoobsOfSteel: Subverted: while being the most naturally stacked of the main cast even without using pokeballs, she's not the strongest female trainer, as the majority of her Pokémon's levels are around the 70's, a bit lower than the other Dexholders.
* ClassyCatBurglar
* CoolBigSis: To Silver and sometimes Yellow.
* CrazyPrepared: Green' battles are made of this trope. Sabrina can come after you with hallucinations of your past? [[DistractedBytheSexy No]] [[VictoriasSecretCompartment Problem]]. Lorelei's capable of freezing people? [[ArtificialLimbs Alreadly thought of]]. Up against your childhood trauma? [[CrowningMomentofAwesome Well~]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Her and Silver's backstory in the GSC saga.
* DubNameChange: Her and Blue's names were switched in the English translation.
* DressingAsTheEnemy : As Sabrina in the RGB series.
* [[GuileHero Guile Heroine]]: Once she's unquestionably become one of the good guys.
* FaceYourFears: when she confronts Will and Karen in Ilex Forest, they intimidate her with Lugia and Ho-Oh, the latter being the cause for her fear of birds in the first place. [[spoiler:However, Green reveals that she's already overcome her fears, when she reveals her new Pokémon, Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres. The reason for her absence for most of the arc is actually because of this trope.]]
* FilleFatale: She uses her sex appeal to get what she wants. She flirted with Red and stole his stuff when they first met...however, upon growing up, she didn't become a FemmeFatale.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Phlegmatic with a dash of Melancholic.
* GambitRoulette: Against Lorelei.
* {{Jerkass}} [[CharacterDevelopment to]] JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Eventually grows almost completely out of jerkassery, though she is still fond of light teasing.
* KillerRabbit: invoked with her team, which she refrained from evolving until the [=FRLG=] saga, allegedly to lull her opponents into a sense of security.
* LittleBlackDress: In the Kanto and Johto arcs.
* LittleMissConArtist
* LittleMissSnarker
* LoveableRogue: Possibly the most popular girl dexholder in the series.
* MagicSkirt
* MasterOfDisguise: Her Ditto can double as a mask.
** Also as a fake arm
* MsFanservice: Just try to deny it after seeing her battle with Sabrina.
** VictoriasSecretCompartment: [[FakeBoobs Pokéballs as breasts]], loaded with Jigglypuff and Clefairy. Poor Sabrina.
* NaughtyIsGood
* NiceHat: Gets one as part of her new ensemble from Silver.
* NoblewomansLaugh: Whenever Green says something that will make Blue comment what a pesky girl she is.
* ParentsInDistress: In the FRLG arc.
* SheIsAllGrownUp
* ShipTease: Some with Blue, Red, and Silver.
* [[TheSmartGuy The Smart Girl]]
* [[SnakeOilSalesman Snake Oil Salesgirl]]: It's one way she managed to get by in life.
* StealthMentor: To Yellow; she is the one who got Yellow to go on her quest to start with.
* TakenForGranite
* [[TricksterArchetype Trickster]]: Very, ''very'' tricky.
* {{Troll}}: Enjoys messing around with others feelings and deceiving them. The infamous "Pokeball chest" trick comes to mind.
* WeakButSkilled: While Blue isn't really ''weak'', her Pokémon's levels are considerably lower than Red's and Blue's. However, all her major victories were due to clever tricks and strategies, so she doesn't have to spend all her free time training and battling.
* WhatTheHellHero: Called out by Sabrina, her ally at the time, for her deception of her during the battle with Lorelei. Green attempts a justification ("You can't fool your enemies if you don't fool your friends!"), but Sabrina's not buying it.
* WhiteGloves: She made a pair for herself and a black version for Silver to keep their hands warm while they were under the Masked Man. She no longer wears them as of FR/LG.
* [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes Why Did It Have to Be Birds?]]: Starts off the story with a crippling fear of bird Pokémon [[spoiler:due to the fact that she was drafted into the Masked Man's service after being kidnapped by Ho-oh]]. She got better.

!!'''Green's Pokemon'''

!!'''Jiggly (Puriri)'''
A Wigglytuff that Green has owned since she was a small child.

A Clefable that Green has owned since it was a Clefairy.

* BlushSticker
* {{Lunacy}}
* NonElemental
* OurFairiesAreDifferent

!!'''Nido/Nidory (Nido-chan)'''
A Nidoqueen that Green has owned since she was a Nidoran.

* DishingOutDirt: Secondary type.
* {{Lunacy}}
* [[PoisonousPerson Poisonous Pokémon]]: Primary type.

!!'''Bull'''
A Granbull that Green has owned since it was a Snubbull. Was once traded to Silver for his Horsea and then back.

* BullyBulldog
* CuteLittleFangs: As a Snubbull.
* NonElemental
* PerpetualFrowner
* PunnyName / LostInTranslation: In the original Japanese version, Green's Granbull is nicknamed "ブルー (Bull)". The pun is here is that Green 's name, when written in katakana, is written exactly the same as Snubbull's Japanese name, Bull. The only reason that we know that it even has a nickname is from [[AllThereInTheManual Netkun]] and the fact that Green calls her Granbull "Bull" even after evolving. This was not caught by translators and all official English translations refer to Bull by its species name.

[[folder: Yellow]]
!!Yellow -- The Healer
->''"Humans and Pokémon can live together! I know it!"''
[[quoteright:193:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Yellow_Adventures.jpg]]
She's the first main character in the manga not to be based on a game protagonist. Yellow appears in her own individual arc on a quest to find Red, who has mysteriously gone missing, and ends up defeating Lance. Her first Pokémon was a Rattata nicknamed Ratty caught by--you guessed it--Red. Her "starter" then was Red's Pikachu, Pika, and her "starter" now is her own Pikachu, Chuchu.
----
* AchillesHeel: See HeavySleeper below.
* ActionGirl: Despite her gentle personality, she definitely counts as one too.
* BadassAdorable: Textbook example.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Yellow is probably the most pacifistic and sweet-tempered of the Dex Holders who dislikes battling so much that she'd rather render her enemies immobile instead of outright hurting them, or just plain run away. However she knows when to get serious; threaten the Viridian Forest or try to KillAllHumans, and the gloves are off.
** [[TookALevelInBadass Badass Grinding]]: Even without the SuperweaponSurprise in play, she still managed to take injuries from her fight with Lance in stride, even overcoming him in spite of them. Training under Green and facing the crisis instigated by the Kanto Elite Four certainly helped this along.
* CanonForeigner
* ChekhovsGunman: She actually appears for the first time near the end of the first arc (when Red catches her Rattata for her, mentioned above), several chapters before her own arc begins.
* CompressedHair: Whenever she wears her hat.
** RapunzelHair: Her high ponytail is already waist-length.
* TheDreaded: You'd think she'd be the last person to be this to ''anyone'', but she is. [[spoiler:The only reason Petrel managed to get the drop on Lance is because he exploited Lance's fear of her.]]
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: Everyone knows of her crush on Red, [[ObliviousToLove except Red of course]]. The end of the GSC chapter implies Red does know of the crush.
* EyesOfGold: A recent colored picture suggests that her eyes glow in her namesake whenever she uses her powers.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Sanguine with a dash of Supine.
* {{Hammerspace}}: That pouch thing can hold her sketchbook and fishing rod without them being seen. At times it looks like she just pulls them out of her back.
* HeavySleeper: Overusing her powers will force her to fall into a deep sleep, no matter how inopportune the situation. Worst situation of all was when she was [[spoiler:inside the out-of-control Team Rocket airship.]] Granted, before that happened, she had to use her powers a lot more than she usually did.
* LateArrivalSpoiler: [[SamusIsAGirl Yellow is a girl!]]
* LetsGetDangerous: Yellow should be easy to beat in a battle, right? Her Pokémon are weaklings, she hates fighting...[[spoiler:''HOLY SHOOT HER POKEMON'S LEVELS JUST JUMPED UP ALL THE WAY TO THE EIGHTIES''.]]
* LimitedWardrobe: From Yellow saga to Emerald.
* TheMedic: Gifted with the powers of the Viridian Forest, Yellow has a special ability that allows her to completely heal wounded Pokémon. And all she has to do is ''touch'' them.
** Not even that, she just needs to be near them. Though this is showcased more often with Lance, who has the same powers as her but is more competent with them.
** CombatMedic
* MultiethnicName: Her first name is English and her last name, Caballero, is the Spanish word for knight.
* NiceHat: For a needed plot twist
** ChekhovsGun: [[spoiler:That hat was given to Yellow by Blue, along with the Rainbow and Silver Wings that are worn on it.]]
* OlderThanTheyLook: Crystal, Gold and Silver, on different occasions, were shocked to learn that Yellow is a year ''older'' than them, as Yellow is almost a foot shorter.
* ParentalAbandonment: Just ''where'' are they? (but at least the fisher uncle is there...)
* PsychicChild: Can read the minds of Pokémon and has limited telekinesis. She is the youngest of the first-generation protagonists.
* PsychicPowers: Her Viridian-based powers include:
** HealingHands
** MindOverMatter
** {{Telepathy}}
** SuperEmpowering
* RedStringOfFate: With Red.
* [[spoiler:RescueRomance: How she fell in love with/started looking up to Red. It's never hinted that Red's ever realized that she's the same little girl he rescued from that rampaging Dratini all those years ago.]]
* SamusIsAGirl[=/=]{{Bifauxnen}}: She conceals her gender by wearing a huge straw hat that hides her ponytail. It's only revealed later in her arc that she is, in fact, female.
** Also, considering the Yellow chapter is ''the second'', any instance of spoiler-marking her gender may make most of the fans groan, because YouShouldKnowThisAlready.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: In FRLG as compared to RGB and Yellow arc. Though she could still pass for a boy, and she's still shorter than Silver (and probably everyone else, minus Emerald).
* ShipTease: Sprinkled liberally with Red and arguably with Silver in the FR/LG arc.
* SkilledButNaive
* SpeaksFluentAnimal
* TakenForGranite: Since she was sleeping during petrification it's really disputable if her mind was conscious those past 3 months, since she was already awake on the reversal of the petrification.
* TakeUpMySword: When Red disappeared, Yellow used his Pikachu and Pokédex.
* WeakButSkilled: Definitely counts as this for most of the Yellow arc; given the usual power level for Dex Holders, she might still be this (when not using her SuperEmpowering, of course)

[[quoteright:245:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gold_67.png]]
He's the first hero of the GSC arc. Gold comes from a well-to-do family, can be quite a flirt and thinks of Pokémon as his family as he grew up with a lot of them. His journey begins when he sees Silver steal a Pokémon from Elm's lab and decides to catch him himself. Gold's first Pokémon was an Aipom (nicknamed Aibo in Viz's translation and Ataro in Chuang Yi's translation) and his 'starter' was a Cyndaquil (nicknamed Exbo and Explotaro in Viz and Chuang Yi's releases respectively).
----
* AintTooProudToBeg: Eventually resorts to going to the ground and begging to get Oak to give him one of the Pokedexes.
* AntiHero: Type I/II hybrid.
* BadassNormal: Probably the most "normal" out of the Dex Holders.
* ChivalrousPervert: Regularly hits on a pretty girl. [[DudeLooksLikeALady And Bugsy.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Losing battles and almost his own life practically five times to the BigBad? Does not care!
* DressingAsTheEnemy: and...

* HandsomeLech: He flirts with almost every woman he sees in the GSC saga (and in one instance, he flirted with [[DudeLooksLikeALady Bugsy]]). He seemed to have stopped doing so in the Emerald chapter....but then gets right back to it in the HGSS saga.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:GSC finale but got better.]]
* HeroicBSOD: In latter GSC.
* HotBlooded: There were even flames in the background when he showed intense desire to beat up the Masked Man.
* IdiotHero: Out of all the Dex Holders, he's the only who hasn't completely grown out of it yet.
** Sixteen as of HGSS. They grow up so fast...
* IndyPloy: His are so blatant that mental objections fill the panel when he acts like he planned it all along.
** GambitRoulette: [[spoiler:In the Emerald chapter, against Guile. From an ''IndyPloy''.]]
* ImprobableWeaponUser: He is ''very'' good with a Pool Cue.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: NotSoDifferent from his rival in this respect, but he usually means well and just wants to show off.
* TheLeader: Type III of the Johto Dex holders.
* TheMcCoy
* TheNicknamer: 'Strict Woman', 'Sexy Lady' and 'Prissy Boy' to name some.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Goes on to give the police an inaccurate description of Silver just so Gold can be the one to catch him.
* PhraseCatcher: Whenever he brags about something, others would call him "Liar" behind his back.
* ShipTease: Him and Crystal.
* ShonenHair
* StaticCharacter: He has some small growth, but compared to the other Dex Holders, he's the only one who doesn't change significantly.
* TsurimeEyes
* UnclePennybags: Not as rich as Platinum Berlitz, but he is portrayed to have enough money to count as a literal rich idiot.
* WildHair: Whenever he takes his hat off, especially in HGSS.

!!'''Gold's Pokémon'''

!!'''Aibo/Ataro (Ētarou)'''
One of the Pokémon that lived in Gold's home. He was originally the first and only Gold took on his journey until Gold realized he lost (and later retrieved) Polibo. Started out as an Aipom and later evolved when it learned Double Hit.

* EverythingsBetterWithMonkeys
* NonElemental
* PrehensileTail: Gains two upon evolving.
* PunnyName: Though entirely an English-version nickname, Aibo is Japanese for "Partner".

!!'''Exbo/Explotaro (Bakutarou)'''

* EyesAlwaysShut: As a Cyndaquil.

A Politoed that was one of the Pokémon that lived in Gold's house since it was a Poliwag. After an incident involving Team Rocket, it was lost at sea but was later found and became a major part of his team. Gold initially intended for him to evolve into a Poliwrath like Red's but Polibo evolved into a Politoed after it was temporarily traded to Silver for his Seadra.

* AwesomeMomentOfCrowning: The King's Rock is what caused Polibo to evolve once it was traded to Silver.
* MakingASplash

!!'''Sunbo/Sintaro (Kimatarou)'''
A Sunflora that Gold caught as a Sunkern. She evolved into a Sunflora during the battle against the Masked Man.

* DishingOutDirt
* [[WhenTreesAttack When Fake Trees Attack]]

!!'''Togebo/Togetaro (Togetarou)'''
A Togepi that Gold hatched from an egg. Due to a problem with connecting to Togebo, Gold went a while unable to evolve it. During the battle against Arceus, Gold managed to connect with Togebo, and it evolve into Togetic and Togekiss to stop the rampaging Pokémon.

* BlowYouAway: Secondary type.
* EggshellClothing: As a Togepi.
* {{Flight}}
* [[LikeFatherLikeSon Like Trainer, Like Pokémon]]: Gold's ability to make his hatched Pokémon like him turned a Pokémon that is known for bringing happiness into a gambling delinquent.
* TookALevelInBadass: As a Togepi, he was badass, but won most of his battles through pure luck. Upon evolving twice, he became strong enough to face against Arceus and calm it down with a single attack. [[spoiler:Although he didn't actually hurt it.]]
* Tsundere: Wanted Gold to ride him, but seemed unable to ask directly.

!!'''Tibo/Mantaro (Mantarou) and Remoraid'''

* PunnyName[=/=]LostInTranslation: Like Bull, Pich is a nicknamed Pokémon who's name was not caught by any translators. When written in Japanese, Pich's name is only one character short from the Pichu's species name and would probably be considered a spelling error if not for [[AllThereInTheManual Netkun]].

[[quoteright:224:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Silver_special_HGSS_5492.png]]
The second hero and TheLancer of the GSC saga. He's an AntiHero and works in ways that aren't always very favorable. Has a [[DarkAndTroubledPast secret, dark past]], but is usually just a JerkWithAHeartOfGold. His first Pokémon is a Sneasel and his starter is a Totodile which he stole from the lab.
----
* AntiHero: Type IV at first, develops into Type II overtime.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy
* BerserkButton: [[spoiler:Do not harm or even harass Blue. Silver will WRECK you.]]
* TheComicallySerious: he comes across as a serious character in his early appearances...but then he saw his wanted poster.
** This is taken to hilarious levels when we find out near the end of the HGSS arc that [[spoiler: Silver is a fan of Proteam Omega, and seems fixated on staying at Gold's house just to catch its first airing on television. The only other main character who is known to be a fan of the show is [[{{Adorkable}} Diamond]].]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: The poor dear was kidnapped at a young age, which is how he met Blue.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Silver has been shown secretly working with Blue during the Yellow arc, but wasn't introduced until the GSC arc.
* EvilRedHead: Not really, just more of a jerk.
* FlungClothing: When he ditched the TR wardrobe Sird put on him.
* GrayEyes

* LikeBrotherAndSister: With Blue.
* LukeIAmYourFather: It turns out later that [[spoiler:he's the son of Team Rocket boss Giovanni.]]

[[folder: Crystal]]
!!'''Crystal''' -- The Catcher/Capturer
->''"Capture complete!"''
[[quoteright:174:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Crys_special_HGSS_4184.png]]
She's the third and last hero/ine of the GSC saga. Her name is usually shortened to Crys. Crystal stars in two books alone before teaming up with Silver and Gold. She was given a Pokédex after taking the job of catching Pokémon for the Professor so she can help the run down orphanage she's helping look after. Has caught all non-legendaries and is currently working as Oak's assistant. Her first Pokémon was a Smoochum named Chumee and starter is a Chikorita, (nicknamed Megaree in Viz's version and simply 'Mega' in Chuang Yi's version). Each of her Pokémon have a star on them somewhere.
----
* TheAce: She is this in regards to Pokemon catching. It says volumes of her skill that she legitimately managed to Catch 'Em All, or at least every non-Legendary in Kanto & Johto & Hoenn by the Emerald Arc.
* ActionGirl: More of a catcher but can battle fine too.
* AgeInappropriateDress: [[http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/8/86/Crystal_HGSS_Adventures.png Her outfit in HGSS]]; forced on to her by [[ManChild her mother]].
* BoobsOfSteel: Subverted; while she isn't the most naturally stacked of the main cast, she is however, the strongest female trainer in terms of general powerlevels, as the majority of her team approach the 80's.
* BrainyBrunette: If you count her Emerald artwork, where her hair is a dark brown.
* CatchPhrase: (Viz version) "Capture complete!"
** Chuang Yi version: "Capture done."
* TheCoatsAreOff: She does this quite a few times before HGSS, most notably when rescuing Bill's boat from a wild Flaafy and Dunsparce and while re-training herself at Mt. Mortar.
* CompositeCharacter: She currently wears [[strike:{{Mario}}'s]] Lyra's outfit from ''Pokémon [=HeartGold=] & [=SoulSilver=]''. [[SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute How ironic]].
* CoolBigSis: To Emerald, the orphans, Ruby and Sapphire.
* ExtremityExtremist: She uses her Pokéballs by kicking them at her targets, a habit she developed after injuring her arms while training her capturing skills.
* GirlishPigtails: Hers slant upwards. Though she's nowhere near childish.
* GottaCatchThemAll: And she ''succeeded'', [[SequelHook sort of...]]
* HeroicBSOD: Has one [[spoiler: when she fails to catch Suicune and understand it in GSC.]] Her mother has to [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan slap her]] and she has to start training from scratch when she finally reboots.
* KickChick: The one and only.
* TheKirk
* ModestyShorts
* MoodSwinger: Whenever catching is involved, she turns super serious and focused.
* OnlySaneMan: Between her, Gold and Silver, she's the most responsible.
* ShipTease: Primarily with Gold, though there's some with Emerald and Silver too.
* {{Shorttank}}
* TaughtByTelevision: Watching Sabrina sure benefited her and the RSE gang in the Emerald saga.
* TeamMom: To Emerald and especially to the Violet City Orphans.
** Though she's more [[CoolBigSis like a cool older sister]] to Ruby and Sapphire.
* {{Tsundere}}: Type B, mainly toward Gold. Justified, given his [[JerkassWithAHeartOfGold general attitude]]
** She's like this in regard to catching as well, normally being a happy-go-lucky girl and [[MoodSwinger suddenly switching to pure, stern professionalism]] when catching is involved (something Bill lampshades when he sees it happen: "Is this even the same girl!?")
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Out of all the Dex holders, possibly except Platinum Berlitz (who borders between black or dark blue), she seems to have the most unnatural blue hair in the cast.
** Though, of course, she originally had brown hair.
* ZettaiRyouiki: HGSS outfit
** And almost a Grade S too, if not for the fact that her pigtails are inverted and she doesn't have a {{Tsundere}} personality.

!!'''Crystal's Pokémon'''

!!'''Chumee (Mupyon)'''

!!'''Megaree/Mega (Megapyon)'''
A Meganium that wanted to join Crystal's team after hearing about the exploits that Gold's Exbo and Silver's Feraligatr had with their Trainers. A Parasect that Crystal met after she was sent down a cliff from a wild Arcanine. She uses special spores made inside her body to inflict status inflictions on Pokémon, making them easier to capture. She has star patterns on her mushroom body.

* BlankWhiteEyes: Although the fact that the mushroom has taken over a Parasect's body is never brought up.
* BigCreepyCrawlies: Primary type.
* GreenThumb: Secondary type.

!!'''Archy/Arckee (Winpyon)'''
An Arcanine that Crystal met when she was a child. Having been blinded in his right eye by a wild Larvitar, he went on a rampage and knocked Crystal off a cliff until she healed him later. Wears a star collar on his neck.

* CanisMajor

!!Ruby -- The Charmer
->''"True beauty lies in the heart! The heart that is capable of love!"''
[[quoteright:200:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Ruby_Special.png]]
The male protagonist of the RS Arc. Despite being the son of Gym Leader Norman, Ruby is deeply fixated on Pokémon contests and the beauty and appearance of his team. Naturally, this has put him at odds with his father. First Pokémon(s) are a Skitty named Coco, Poochyena named Nana and Ralts named Ruru. His starter is a Mudkip named Zuzu.
----
* AmbiguouslyGay: Turned out to be straight, though.
** CampStraight
* AntiHero: Type 2 with shades of Type 1.
* BishieSparkle: Whenever he says something related to beautifying or contests.
* TheBet: Both he and Sapphire made a bet to accomplish their goals within 80 days.[[spoiler: It ends in a tie.]]
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He does whatever he can to avoid direct Pokémon confrontation. [[spoiler:Push him into it or remove him from the public eye, however, and you'll learn quick that five years isn't enough to dull his blade.]]
* CovertPervert: Notable example includes him taking an unconscious Sapphire's measurements. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]]; it's for modifying [[LimitedWardrobe a change of his clothes]] for her.

* ItWasWithYouAllAlong: His search for the ultimate Contest Pokémon. [[spoiler:A Milotic, which Mimi eventually evolves into.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Rather impetuous and vain, but his heart's in the right place.
* LimitedWardrobe: Special mention for actually having a closet full of identical outfits, including multiples of [[NiceHat his hat]]. [[http://www.otakuworks.com/view/76043/pokemon-adventures/vol-15-chp-180-190/read/42 Seen here.]]

* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: The CampStraight to Sapphire's {{Tomboy}}. The fact that he's named after the pink or red colored Ruby, while Sapphire is named after the blue colored Sapphire accentuates this.
* MayDecemberRomance: Courtney certainly seemed interested...
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:Does this after realizing the consequences of yelling at his Feebas, Mimi.]]

* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend : To Sapphire, He openly denies it when the chips are not down.
* SignificantName: He's named after the Pink-colored Ruby, which fits quite well with his status as the pink boy to Sapphire's blue girl.
** His birthday is at 2nd of July, in which his birthstone is ruby.

* StoicSpectacles: Ruby actually has bad eyesight. When he's sewing, they may count as NerdGlasses, but he also wears them when he's figuring out battle strategies. He actually looks pretty intelligent in them.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: When he [[spoiler: takes off his hat]], he really looks like mini-Norman.
* SuperSpeed: his Running Shoes allow him to keep up with cars. Much better than their game counterpart, which basically amounted to [[YouHaveResearchedBreathing researching running]].
* TookALevelInJerkass:[[spoiler: Had two WhatTheHellHero moments ''in a row'' prior to the climax of the Ruby & Sapphire arc; He first refuses to aid Sapphire in saving Hoenn from destruction because ''"It wasn't his problem"'' and then [[KickTheDog takes out his anger]] [[TheWoobie on his Feebas]] for losing a contest. [[quoteright:200:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Sapphire_Special.png]]
The female protagonist for the RS arc. The yang to Ruby's yin, she assists Prof. Birch in his studies and is more than ready for anything nature can throw at her. After an argument with Ruby, she sets off both their journeys with a bet - she'll see Pokémon contests in a new light if he can get all the ribbons in ''80 days'', while she seeks to get all the local badges in that time limit. [[spoiler:This is inspired, in fact, by her own encroaching 11th birthday and the fact she wants to beat Red's record for defeating the Gym leaders.]] First Pokémon is an Aron named Rono while starter is a Torchic named Toro.
----
* ActionGirl: So very much.
* AdaptationalBadass: She's certainly more aggressive than May is as a [=NPC=].
* BadassAdorable
* BadassNormal: One of a small list of humans who fight Pokémon unaided. She does have her own, but she's hardly helpless without them.
* BareYourMidriff: Only when she's in her jungle outfit.
* TheBet: Both she and Ruby made a bet to accomplish their goals within 80 days.[[spoiler: It ends in a tie.]]
* BookDumb: Subverted. Once she got the tough-sounding words out of the way, she went down as the first to score perfect marks in Roxanne's written exam gym challenge.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: [[http://www.mangareader.net/458-28386-2/pokemon-adventures/chapter-188.html Breaking a (weakened) fountain]] and sprinting while carrying two full-grown men and a woman near the start of the arc should give you an idea what she's capable of.
* CuteBruiser
* CuteLittleFangs: Probably to emphasize how a WildChild she is.
* DoesNotLikeShoes: Again, only when she's in her jungle outfit.
* [[spoiler:ForgottenChildhoodFriend]]
* [[SheIsNotMyGirlfriend He Is Not My Boyfriend]]: Hilariously with Ruby.
** [[spoiler:Played straight in the beginning, but in the Emerald arc, she's pretty much ready to beat the shit out of him whenever he claims to have forgotten what exactly happened during the RS climax, including their love confessions to each other.]]
* HeroWorshipper: Red's achievements were actually the motivation for her journey in the first place.
* HotBlooded: Not as much as Pearl, Gold, or Black though (She ''may'' have started out on par with them, but she mellows out by the end.)
* [[spoiler:TheIngenue]]: Was this when she was younger. [[spoiler:It's also part of what crushed the younger Ruby so much when he thought he'd scared her.]]
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: She has absolutely no qualms in going around in a leaf bikini or taking her clothes off in front of strangers.
* JunglePrincess: She becomes this due to believing...
** ItsAllMyFault: [[spoiler:That same Salamence in Ruby's tragic backstory [[HarmfulToMinors cut him up]] before he chased it off. She blamed herself for her own weakness and inability to fight, and [[GoingNative went native]] as part of her assistance in Prof. Birch's research to rectify that. Along the way, she engaged in some [[TookALevelInBadass badass grinding]], and only went from there after her wager with Ruby.]]
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: The {{tomboy}} to Ruby's CampStraight. The fact that she's named after the blue colored Sapphire, while Ruby is named after the pink or red colored Ruby accentuates this.
* TheMcCoy
* SignificantName: She's named after the Blue-colored Sapphire, which fits quite well with her status as the blue girl to Ruby's pink boy.
** Her birthday is at 20th of September, in which her birthstone is sapphire.
* SkirtOverSlacks: When she's actually wearing clothes, anyway.
* {{Tomboy}}: Her goal is to beat all of the gym leaders in Hoenn, and she scoffs at the idea of participating in contests.
** TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Post-{{Character Development}}, remnants of her old personality are starting to surface back up, such as her admitting that the way Ruby grooms his Pokemon is beautiful and her being a romantic.
* {{Tsundere}}: To Ruby. Type A.
* UptightLovesWild: With Ruby as the Uptight and her as the Wild.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: While normally fearless, a recount of her fight with Frontier Brain Tucker during the Emerald saga suggests she still has trouble dealing with Salamence, most likely due to her previously mentioned encounter with one.
* [[WildChild Wild Girl]]: [[TheNicknamer Gold's nickname]] for her. Sounds accurate.

!!'''Emerald -- The Calmer'''
->''"It's not the Pokémon battles that I like! It's the Pokémon...and the people who like Pokémon!"''
[[quoteright:200:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Emerald_Adventures.png]]
The protagonist of the Emerald arc. He is the second main character in the manga not to be based on a game protagonist. A trainer who loves Pokémon battles but not Pokémon ([[CharacterDevelopment at first]]), he utilizes a variety of gadgets and is a genius at item battles. He challenges the Hoenn Battle Frontier in his arc, claiming that he will subdue the Frontier Brains in the seven days prior to the opening ceremonies. [[spoiler:This coincides with the appearance of Jirachi in the Battle Frontier.]] He's the only main character whose first Pokémon is actually a starter, in this case Sceptile.
----
* AnimeHair: Actually held up with hair gel, unlike almost all examples of this trope. It helps to make him look taller.
* AntiHero: A Type I and III hybrid.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Just one glance tells him the origin site of a Pokémon. Given just how he calms the (unnaturally) frenzied Pokémon in the arc, it qualifies.
** Hence why he quickly bonded with Noland after their battle.
* ArtificialLimbs: [[TrickedOutGloves His hand extenders]] & [[TrickedOutShoes platform shoes]] can count as this.
* BerserkButton: Don't call him short or hurt Crystal. [[spoiler:He will DECIMATE you.]]
* TheBet: He made a bet with the Frontier Brains that he will beat them all in seven days.
* BrattyHalfPint: Just don't say it in his face.
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: Let's count the ways:
** He has a great deal of knowledge regarding many facets of Pokémon battle.
** He knows that a good way to fight a trainer with [[OlympusMons Legendary Pokémon]], is to feed his fainted Sceptile, one of his 99 Revives, and have it attack while his opponent is bragging about his victory.
* DroughtLevelOfDoom: Emerald has to battle many times before facing the Frontier Brain in each facility, so it counts.
* CanonForeigner
* EarlyBirdCameo[=/=]ChekhovsGunman: [[spoiler:He was shown as a shadow in GSC.]]
** [[spoiler:Although you can't even recognize him since he hadn't adopted his distinctive hair by then, so it was more likely a RetCon that it was him in the first place.]]
** A straighter example would thus be the panel of his trainer card in the R/S arc.
** Hilariously, the majority of his team is made of Pokémon that are not only possessed by other Dex Holders, but also get pre-evolutions in Gen IV.
* [[spoiler:FriendlessBackground]]: The Loner Type.
* GreenEyes
* HeroWorshipper: It was due to [[spoiler:Crystal's selfless actions]] that motivated him to become a Dex Owner in the first place.
* HonorBeforeReason: [[spoiler: He refuses to acknowledge that the bonds he's formed with his Pokémon contribute to his victories, and to prove this point he exchanges his roster for a team of Pokémon he's never used before. To battle a frontier brain. After witnessing the HeroicResolve of his Sceptile saving him from being defeated by Ruby.]]
** Later, [[spoiler: when fighting his way through the Battle Tower to confront [[BigBad Guile Hideout]], he refuses to break the rules of the Battle Tower despite fighting for his life and the lives of everyone in the Battle Frontier.]]
* [[spoiler:IJustWantToHaveFriends]]: Type B.
* ImportantHairAccessory: His green gem in his forehead. [[spoiler: [[ChekhovsGun Turns out the gem was used in a failed attempt to control Rayquaza earlier in the RS arc.]]]]
* IWorkAlone: the first time he met them, he refused Ruby and Sapphire's offer to help in his mission.
* ImprobableHairstyle: Just look at the picture!
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold
* JerkassFacade: Rebuffed and insulted the Pokémon team he gained for their affections [[spoiler: so no one would insult them for being like substitute limbs for him]]
* TheKirk
* LonersAreFreaks: Emerald was a loner prior to his debut, [[spoiler:until Emerald finally comes to terms with his true desire to forge bonds between fellow Dex Owners as well as Pokémon.]]
* TheNapoleon: The only character in the series shorter than ''Yellow''! His equipment provides a marginally effective ruse, but it can't hope to last.
** AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Said dwarfism also provided much teasing in his youth.
** PintSizedKid: Taken to extremes.
* RefusedByTheCall[=/=]TheCallPutMeOnHold: [[spoiler: At first he was refused to be given a PokéDex, only to be given to him much later after undergoing both the SecretTestOfCharacter and several months of TrainingFromHell.]]
* SignificantName: He's named after the green-colored emerald, which fits quite well along with his companions Ruby and Sapphire.
** His birthday is at 31st of May, in which his birthstone is emerald.
* UnusualEyebrows: Look at the picture ''again''.
* UrineTrouble: He has a rather weird habit of peeing from the ''windows'' of tall buildings.
* VSign: He does this after he gets 17 consecutive wins in the Battle Factory.
* WhatTheHellHero:[[spoiler: When he recalled his three most trusted Pokémon and replaces them with another prior to the final Battle Dome Match, to which he loses horribly.]]
* [[spoiler: YouAreNotAlone]]

[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/diamond-vol34-rawcover_6632.jpg]]
The first hero of the DP arc. His name is usually shortened to Dia. He's the fool in the comedy duo . He's always shown to be always eating and sleepy. But despite his foolish looking face, he is also quite sensitive to his surroundings and can detect the smallest things in a situation. First Pokémon is a Munchlax named Lax and starter is a Turtwig named 'Tru'.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: Face it - he's a mecha anime addict, loves to eat, a {{Butt Monkey}}, rather emotional, often unintentionally funny, yet still remains a big {{Badass}}. He can't be anything but this.
* AntiHero: Type I.
* BigEater: He's eating practically in every chapter. [[spoiler: Even while on board TG's plane!]]
* BodyguardCrush: It was a mistake when he and Pearl become Platinum Berlitz's bodyguards, but he still crushes on her.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: Diamond's the ''boke''.
** StraightManAndWiseGuy: He's the Wise Guy.
* BrilliantButLazy: He's actually very intuitive for his age, but he rarely shows it.
* CantCatchUp: Byron sends him into a personal training session with Riley at Iron Island for not being as strong or battle-smart as Pearl and Platinum, something even [[WordOfGod Satoshi Yamamoto]] points out. He makes up for this with his courage and empathy later on.
* CasualDangerDialog: He's normally unfazed even when the times are dire. An example [[http://jb2448.info/Pokemon_Adventures_34/Pokemon_Special_v34_c378/Pokemon_Special_v34_v378_073-neuquant here.]]
* CharacterTics: Every now and then he slaps his cheeks when he feels determined.
* CheerfulChild: He's the only one out of the Sinnoh trio who seems to act like he's really 12 years old.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Pearl.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: When Pearl points out that they have no duty other than protecting Platinum, Diamond says he still wants to stand up to the bad guy anyways.
** MartyrWithoutACause: He still wants to fight despite there being generally nothing at stake.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Yes, he IS quite of a dope and can be really slow sometimes, but he makes up for it with his quick logic and can stand the ground on [[BigBad Cyrus]] when he needs to.
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler:[[LikeYouWouldReallyDoIt Like they would really kill off a main character!]] But he really ''would'' have died from Giratina's Shadow Force, had he not been [[NoSell exposed to the Distortion World enough times for him to become immune to it already]].]]
* DorkKnight: Despite not being a real knight, he qualifies for this.
* DressingAsTheEnemy: Dia disguises himself as a TG grunt by [[MuggedForDisguise mugging a grunt's clothes]] in the latter DP saga.
* TheDulcineaEffect: Sort of. He becomes fiercely determined to protect Platinum upon a day of meeting her.
* EasilyForgiven: Sure, [[spoiler: he didn't know yet that Cyrus had undergone a [[HeelFaceTurn change of heart]] during his stay in the Distortion World, but why exactly would he casually remind him of his old plan of reconstructing the universe? Even after hearing Cyrus's {{Freudian Excuse}}, he completely forgets the fact that the man tried to kill him and his friends several times over and immediately [[IntergenerationalFriendship teams up with him]].]]
* TheEmpath
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Byron is the first to notice that Pokémon become quite fond of him.
* GrewASpine: One may think that he's just the quiet unassuming underdog of the comedy duo, but midway in the DP arc he reveals to Pearl that he wants to follow his own feelings and do what he wants for a change. He then goes on to be the biggest {{Bad Ass}} of the DP arc.
* TheHeart: His normalcy is what enables him to have the biggest heart in the series.
* HeroWorshipper: In a flashback, he was shown to be a fan of Red and has puppets of his Pokémon.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Him and Pearl.
** BashBrothers: This too.
* IdiotHero: Even if you ignore his {{Obfuscating Stupidity}}, he still has shades of this.
* InelegantBlubbering: Whenever he's crying, it tends to be this.
* InnocentProdigy: [[SmarterThanYouLook He is much deeper and understanding than he appears]].
* IntergenerationalFriendship: [[spoiler:With [[EvilCounterpart Cyrus]] at the end of the Platinum arc.]]
* IronButtmonkey: As the boke in their manzai routine, he has to be.
* TheKirk: Until he develops into a [[TheMcCoy McCoy]] at the end of the DP arc.
* LoveAtFirstSight: One-sided case towards Platinum.
* MightyGlacier: Pretty much all of his Pokémon are of the slow but powerful/tough kind, culminating in [[spoiler:Regigigas, who's pretty much the epitome of the archetype]].
* NiceGuy: So much so that when you tick him off (which would require a lot of effort considering his very long patience), [[BewareTheNiceOnes you'd better]] [[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass watch out.]]
* NoSell: [[spoiler: Exposing himself to the Distortion World several times made him immune to Giratina's Shadow Force.]]
* NoSenseOfDirection: In one chapter he mentions that he gets lost even ''with'' a map.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: [[spoiler:He knew from the start Platinum was not a tour guide.]]
* RidiculouslyAverageGuy: His main attribute, according to [[WordOfGod Satoshi Yamamoto.]]
* ShipTease: With Platinum. The BodyguardCrush helps.
* SignificantName: His birthday is on the 4th of April, in which the birthstone is diamond.
* SkewedPriorities: Apparently, lunch always comes first.
* [[spoiler:TakingTheBullet[=/=]HeroicSacrifice]]: [[spoiler: He pushes Pearl out of the way just in time as Giratina's Shadow Force hits him.]]
* TaremeEyes
* TeamChef: Surprisingly [[SupremeChef a good one]] too. He can make high-quality Poffins with difficult berry combinations which were fed to Platinum's Prinplup, not to mention a cream pie for Platinum herself when she got depressed.
* TranquilFury: [[spoiler:Possibly one of the reasons he's associated with Mesprit, the Pokémon of emotion.]]
* WithAFriendAndAStranger: With Pearl being the friend and Platinum being the stranger.

The second hero of the DP arc. He's the straight man of the comedy duo and is very loud and shouts quite a lot. He's somewhat TheLeader of the team. First Pokémon is a Chatot named Chatler and starter is a Chimchar named Chimler. His father is the leader of the Battle Frontier, and thus he has a great wealth of battling and training knowledge, which he often shares with Platinum Berlitz.
----
* AndroclesLion: [[spoiler:Helping that wild Luxray had its perks.]]
* AntiHero: Type II.
* ArmorPiercingSlap: His preferred method of admonishing a {{Dope Slap}} to Dia.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: can tell what attack a Pokémon is going to use just by looking at their movements.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: Pearl's the ''tsukkomi''.
** StraightManAndWiseGuy: He's the {{Straight Man}}.
* BystanderSyndrome: He at first doesn't want to have anything to do with Team Galactic because he believes that his and Dia's only priority is to protect Platinum. He changes his views as the arc goes on.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Diamond.
* DecoyProtagonist: No, he's not as important to the plot as Diamond or Platinum. But early chapters would have you believe otherwise, and internally he's still vaguely their leader.
* {{Determinator}}: Well he is very [[spoiler:closely related to Azelf, the Pokémon of willpower.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Him and Diamond.
** BashBrothers: And this.
* HeroicBSOD: Goes into one after failing to protect Azelf from Team Galactic. He snaps out of it quickly, though.
* HotBlooded: Possibly moreso than Gold as he shouts almost every chapter.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: His treatment of Dia (before he [[WhatTheHellHero calls him out on it]]) occasionally tiptoes from the well-meaning to abusive and he had been very put off by Platinum's [[RichBitch behavior]] at first, but he cares deeply for the both of them. By the end of the DP arc he also seems to have dropped the jerk part completely.
* {{Keet}}
* TheLeader: Type III. While Platinum is the face of the Sinnoh trio, he's the one who actually takes charge.
* TheMcCoy: Until he turns into a [[TheKirk Kirk]] by the end of the DP arc.
* NoIndoorVoice
* NoTimeToThink: A wild Stunky stink-bombs Platinum unconscious after multiple bike-riding failures agitate it, and she starts rolling straight downhill. Pearl saves her ass from a messy trip off Cycling Road by utilizing Prinplup and Chimlord's abilities - the sheer level of intrinsic knowledge and reflexive thought required drives this troper to manly tears.
* OnlySaneMan: He has [[HotBlooded his faults]], but compared to [[BigEater Dia]] or [[CloudCuckooLander Platinum]], he's certainly the most level-headed among the three of them and often has to keep the other two in line.
* ShipTease: With Platinum, especially in the early chapters.
* SignificantName: His birthday is on the 6th of June, in which the birthstone is pearl.
* {{Tsundere}}: Is this to Platinum and Dia, but especially heavy on the ''tsun'' to Dia, as [[http://jb2448.info/Pokemon_Adventures_33/Pokemon_Special_v33_c369/Pokemon_Special_v33_c369_093-neuquant shown here]] -- the moment is also a [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming CMoH]].
* TechnicolorEyes: Orange.
* TheLeader: Type III due to his overbearing personality, though technically it's supposed to be Platinum.
* UnstoppableRage: [[spoiler: He unleashes his entire team (and Rotom) out at Charon when he thinks that Dia is killed.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: Dia calmly calls him out for not listening to his opinions and generally treating him like his underling. He realizes his mistakes, however, and the two quickly patch up after their battle with Cyrus.
* WithAFriendAndAStranger: With Dia being the friend and Platinum being the stranger.

[[quoteright:322:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/platinum-vol36-rawcover_689.jpg]]
The third hero of the DP arc and the heroine of the Platinum arc. She is the princess of the group and is supposedly on a journey to Mt Coronet to honor a family tradition. She acts very snobbish at first but is later revealed to be also sheltered and curious. First Pokémon is a Ponyta and her starter is a Piplup. She's lightened up quite a bit in the Platinum arc.
----
* ActionGirl: She mowed down the gyms faster than Sapphire and with Pearl and Dia's help is currently battling the Brains without losing yet!
* BadLiar: Whenever she lies, it's ......not very convincing.
* ChekhovsSkill: Many of the new experiences she picks up on her journey end up helping her out in her Gym Battles.
** ChekhovsBoomerang: And one of her learned skills (mastering roulette) was used again in the Platinum arc.
* DecoyProtagonist: Plot-wise, she's the most important among the Sinnoh trio, but by the end of the DP arc it's clear that Diamond's the real hero of the story.
* DefrostingIceQueen: To Dia and Pearl. She acts all snobby at first and considers the two as just mere hired commoner guards but later warms up to them.
* {{Determinator}}: During her first Super Contest.
* TheHedonist / CloudCuckooLander: Played with: Several of her actions, including her gym/frontier challenges, are motivated simply for the sake of the experience itself, and little besides, in the way of justification. Subverted in that she demonstrates few to none of the associated personality traits.
* LadyOfWar: Is technically one due to her personality and prowess in battle.
* TheLeader: Type IV of the Sinnoh leaders, though it's sometimes shared with Pearl.
* MagicSkirt
* NiceToTheWaiter: It takes time for her to act like this to Dia and Pearl, but once the truth got found out they eventually do become her {{True Companions}}.
* NoNameGiven: Her real name isn't revealed in the manga until the release of Pokémon Platinum.
* ObliviousToLove: Is completely clueless regarding Diamond's obvious crush on her.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Before the Platinum Version game was released, she didn't want to give her real name to commoners. Her nickname may be "Ojou-sama", "Missy", or "Lady" depending on the version you're reading.
* TheOjou
* ThePresidentsDaughter
* {{Protectorate}}: She's this to Dia and Pearl. Justified, since both are her bodyguards.
* RichBitch: A little bit at first.
* RichInDollarsPoorInSense: As she is rich enough to (relatively) do whatever she wants, she has a little trouble in the Battle Castle, where only Castle Points may be spent, as this is the first time she has a limited budget to achieve her ends.
* RuleOfSexy: So she wears a hat, a scarf, long sleeves; stuff perfect for winter. But that doesn't stop her from wearing only a skirt, exposing her legs.
* ShelteredAristocrat
* ShipTease: With both Dia and Pearl.
* [[TheSmartGuy The Smart Girl]]: Platinum says she reads ten books per day and she is [[spoiler: very much associated with the Pokémon of Knowledge, Uxie.]]
** BrainyBrunette: Subverted, her hair color is a [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair dark shade of blue.]]
** BadassBookworm
* TheSpock
* SpoiledSweet
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Averted. You do have to wonder how in the world a blonde mother and a brunette father had a bluenette child.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Although by the end of the DP arc she's mostly just Sugar.
* TaughtByExperience: How she mainly wins her Gym battles.
* TsurimeEyes
* WithAFriendAndAStranger: The stranger to Dia and Pearl's friend.
* ZettaiRyouiki: Her black socks/stockings are above the knee unlike her game and anime counterparts.

!!'''Platinum's Pokémon'''

!!'''Rapidash'''
Platinum's first Pokemon and her mode of transportation. Started out as a Ponyta but later evolved.

* ButtMonkey: Poor, poor Rapidash. As a Ponyta, all he would do is lose horribly in whatever battle he was put in. It wasn't until Platinum's battle against Byron that he finally won a battle and evolved not long after.
* CoolHorse
* FlamingHair
* PlayingWithFire

[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Pokemon_Adventures_BW_v04_cover_4382.jpg]]
The male protagonist of the BW arc, he is an eager boy who wishes to challenge Gym Leaders and the Elite Four. First Pokémon are a Rufflet named Brav and a Munna named Musha while his starter is a Tepig named Tep.

* {{Adorkable}}: Has his moments
* AmbiguousDisorder: Black seems to suffer from some form of high-functioning autism, like AspergersSyndrome or something similar to it. Leading credence to this, while he ''acts'' like an IdiotHero he's far from actually stupid - it's more along the lines of "single-mindedly obsessed and focused". This is seen with his abandoning his friends purely because he really ''did'' forget the promise he made (or rather, wasn't thinking about it), and became remorseful after being called out on it).
* AmuletOfDependency: Defied when it comes to Musha. Black refuses to have Musha help him focus in Gym battles, as he feels that he wouldn't be a good trainer if he were that dependent on his Pokémon. Played straight in other situations, though.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: But usually only when his Munna's helping him out; otherwise he's far too distracted.
* BadassBookworm: Surprisingly, he is very studious and reads up on various information on his own (but only when said subject is on Pokemon, of course). Before going on his journey, he looked up to see who the current Gym Leaders, Elite Four, and Champion were and also looked up his own Pokemon to see what they would eventually evolve into.
** Black has claimed that, since he was little, he would go to the local library to look up anything he didn't already know. [[spoiler:Turns out, the real reason why he becomes like that was because Bianca's father won't allow her to play with him and Cheren if he isn't knowledgeable enough to be a Champion. He's so single-minded and determined in his pursue of his study, studying was more like breathing for him and made him incapable of multitasking if he had set his eyes on something.]]
* BerserkButton: DON'T mess with White.
* BoisterousBruiser: If Pokemon Battling can be considered Bruising then he fits this quite a bit. It helps that he’s a LargeHam and that he's pretty Keet as well
* BrownEyes -> GrayEyes
* CharacterDevelopment: After blowing off his friends for his dreams at the start, something Cheren actually tells him quite clearly when he talks to him, he obviously shows that he cares for White, Cheren and Bianca much more.
* ChildhoodFriends: To Cheren and Bianca
* [[spoiler: TheChosenOne: For Reshiram]]

* DitzyGenius
* DorkKnight: Like Diamond, despite not being a true knight, he has more than enough LargeHam and BadassBookworm dorkiness to compensate

* FaceFault: As a consequence for his being {{Super OCD}}, he's rather prone to this.

** [[spoiler:IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy, as Black is encouraged by Marshal and he later agrees to help White catch a Pokemon so that she can prepare for the Battle Subway. He even gives her Brav so she can have enough Pokemon to participate and very genuinely cheers her on ]].
* HeroicBSOD: Understandably enters a state of shock when [[spoiler:he learns that Musha only stayed with him for the taste of his dreams, and leaves him because the dreams have changed.]]
** [[spoiler: Gets out of it though, with the encouragement of his other Pokemon. And later on Musha comes back, evolved as a Musharna, and reveals that it actually left so that it could become stronger to support Black's new dreams.]]
* HotBlooded
* HyperAwareness: He has very good deducing skills, but only after his head is cleared with his Munna's help.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: He blew off his friends quite quickly to start his adventure and would rather obtain badges to pay the the debt he placed on the B&W Corporation. That said, if he is called out on this, he [[CharacterDevelopment will make an effort to fix that attitude]] and he's certainly never truly mean about it
* IdiotHero: Strangely, crosses over with BadassBookworm
* InvisibleParents: Cheren mentions that he has both a mother and a father, but they were never shown.
* LargeHam: Just see his quote.
** IncomingHam
* TheLeader: Type III among Cheren and Bianca.
* NiceGuy: Yes, he has several InnocentlyInsensitive moments and can sometimes forget everything and everyone else but his goals, but Black’s default mode seems to be cheerful and affable and it's later shown that he’s both very fond and very protective of his friends.
* NoIndoorVoice
* [[spoiler: SealedGoodInACan: Ghetsis seals Black into the Light Stone at the end of the BW chapter.]]
* ShipTease: He spent the whole night frantically searching for White, and when he sees a mysterious figure holding her, he brings out his ''whole'' team to fight against them.
* ShonenHair
* ShoutOut: His personality seems somewhat based on [[{{Soul Eater}} Black Star's]], as shown with his constant shouts of [[{{Catchphrase}} YAHOO!]] and his dream [[ToBeAMaster to be the best trainer]].
* ShutUpHannibal: [[http://jb2448.info/Magazine_Scans/Pokemon_Special_BW_c04/Pokemon_Special_BW_c04_014-neuquant Towards N]].
* TheSmartGuy: Comes from being not only being a BadassBookworm and using AwesomenessByAnalysis, but also being willing to learn.
* SpiritedCompetitor
* SuperOCD: Because he is incapable of thinking about anything but challenging the Pokémon League, he needs his Munna to eat away his dreams so that he can concentrate on the matters at hand.
** FatalFlaw: And he ''really'' can't function without his Munna. In fact, just thinking too hard without it will cause him to pass out from exhaustion.
* ToBeAMaster: His goal.
* TrainingFromHell: Forced into this by the Gym Leaders so they can defeat Team Plasma [[spoiler:and use Reshiram]].
* WorkOffTheDebt: Black has a massive debt for destroying a movie set which White paid for. He is now stuck with her.
* WingdingEyes: When he's [[AwesomenessByAnalysis analysing a situation]] after his mind has been 'blanked'. As seen [[http://www.otakuworks.com/view/89816/pokemon-adventures-black-and-white/chp-02/read/12 here.]]

* UseYourHead: Knows Zen Headbutt.
* PsychicPowers
* [[spoiler: ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Turns out he only worked with Black to eat his dreams. Now that he doesn't like Black's dreams anymore, he leaves.]]
** [[spoiler: CameBackStrong: Only to return to him later during the Pokemon League as a Musharna]]

!!'''Nite; previously Tep (Buoh; previously Poka and Chao)'''
Black's "starter" Pokémon that he got from Professor Juniper.

* PlayingWithFire: Primary type.

!!White -- The Dreamer
->''"Anything from acting in dramas, films, ads, plays to printing, please leave it to the BW Agency!!"''
[[quoteright:212:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/White_Special_1497.png]]
The female protagonist of the BW arc, she is the president of a company that rents out Pokémon for commercial purposes, such as TV shows.

* [[spoiler:ActionGirl: Grows into one over the course of the story.]]
* AnimeHair
* BareYourMidriff: White's clothes frequently show her midriff when she is undergoing [[http://pokemon.wikia.com/wiki/File:Pokemon_White_Midriff2.jpg action or forced motion. ]] Presumably for this reason, many fans draw her with this trope.
* ClothingDamage: When White is hit by a powerful razor leaf, her [[http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140309083108/pokemon/images/e/eb/Pokemon_Adventures_White_Midriff.jpg shirt tears up to her navel.]] Her clothes remain in this state for the rest of the chapter.
* DoingItForTheArt: {{Invoked}} - even if she loses money doing so, she always makes sure her Pokémon are in top shape and that her clients are satisfied.
* GenkiGirl: She's very...eccentric.
** Part of it is an act to get work and promotion for her business.
* [[SheIsNotMyGirlfriend He Is Not My Boyfriend]]: She says this word for word when the massage spa manager mistakes Black to be her boyfriend and insists that she go on a cruise with him.
* HonorBeforeReason: She'll do ''anything'' if her company's reputation is on the line.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:After Gigi abandons her for N, complete with DullEyesOfUnhappiness. Has since rebooted and is looking into the Battle Subway [[TookALevelInBadass for an OS upgrade]].]]
* ImprobableAge: Though we don't know her age yet, she is most definitely not an adult yet she works as the representative of a company.
* InsistentTerminology: Tells Black to call her "Boss" ("President" in the Japanese version).
* TheLeader: type IV/I of the Black and White duo, even though she can't fight.
* LettingHerHairDown: Unlike most examples, this signifies her depression. Incidentally, fans all agree she's much prettier with her hair down.
* LovableCoward: Gives off this vibe, considering that her first reaction to being attacked by Pokémon always seems to be screaming.
* NeutralFemale: She flat out tells Black that she has no Pokémon of her own and that she never participated in a battle in her life. [[spoiler:Is looking to [[TookALevelInBadass hack out the "neutral"]] via the Battle Subway.]]
** Both the above tropes are somewhat ironic, considering that the female PC she's based on is a MemeticBadass.
* OhCrap: She freaks when she realizes that due to someone else's carelessness she doesn't have the Pokémon needed for a shooting.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: She doesn't actually expect Black to pay the entirety of his massive debt and only wants his Tepig around for a few more shootings.
** She also gives him time to train for his own goals.
* SayMyName:[[spoiler: Delivers a massive "BLAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!" as the latter becomes the lightstone and flies away from her reach. This is in fact the last thing she says in the BW arc.]]
* ShipTease: At one point, she notices that she has been talking about Black a lot, and talks about how he is actually pretty cool. It doesn't help that she tries to make up an excuse...all while she's only ''talking to herself.''
* TomboyishPonytail
* [[spoiler:TookALevelInBadass: She started out as not being a Trainer. After the incident with N, White decided to learn how to defend herself but wasn't very good at it initially. After training on the Battle Subway, White goes from being unable to defeat a single Pokémon to actually managing to get far enough to face the Subway Bosses, Ingo and Emmet. She's also managed to evolve the Servine following her around into a Serperior, proving she's gotten pretty good at battling.]]
* WhoWearsShortShorts

!!'''Gigi (Bubu-chan)'''
A Tepig from the BW Agency.

* [[spoiler:FaceHeelTurn: Defects to N's side after realizing that White was holding her back from her potential as a fighter...]]
** [[spoiler:HeelFaceTurn: ...Which didn't matter in the end, as Gigi decided she enjoyed show business, and White let her rejoin the BW Agency.]]
* PlayingWithFire
* TertiarySexualCharacteristics: Eyelashes and a bow.

!!'''Amanda'''
A Serperior that White received as a Servine [[spoiler:from N, after Gigi left with him.]] Amanda is revealed to have been [[spoiler:one of three starters Cedric Juniper was intending to give out, before N's attack on his lab led to Amanda (then a Snivy) following N and the Tepig vanishing in the midst of the conflict.]]

* GreenThumb

[[folder: Lack-Two]]
!!Lack-Two
[[quoteright:150:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lack-two_-_rakutsu_4297.png]]
The male protagonist of the [=B2W2=] chapter, Lack-Two is a member of the International Police.

* TheAce: According to Looker's superiors, he's this to the International Police. He's even called "Mister Perfect".
* BadassNormal: Lack-Two doesn't just stand on the sidelines and shout orders when battling. While battling Genesect, Lack-Two barrages it with Pokeballs, forcing Genesect to fight both Lack-Two ''and'' his Pokemon.
* BeneathTheMask: He may seem like a skirt chasing class clown, but he's really part of the International Police. When he's not in class, he's pretty serious and professional. It's hard to tell which is his real personality at this point.
* TheCasanova: His false persona.
* ClothingDamage: Genesect's attack destroys his outer clothing but his body suit remains intact.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: In his introduction, he breaks up with his girlfriend Yancy so she can pursue her career as an idol.
* ImprobableAge: He's a 12 year old who is a high ranking member of the International Police. He even outranks Looker.
* InterpolSpecialAgent: A member of the International Police.
* LetsGetDangerous: When it's time to get serious, you can hardly believe this is the same kid who has been flirting around with every girl in class.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: He's a little ''too'' friendly for Whi-Two's taste, [[spoiler: but she ''is'' the only girl in their class who he hasn't ruled out to be ex-Plasma.]]. In any case, Whi-Two's Foongus certainly doesn't appreciate him trying to get too close to its trainer.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: He states that he goes by "Lack-Two" at the Aspertia Trainer's School, indicating that it's not his real name.
* SimpleYetAwesome: The body suit he wears under his clothes is actually a highly protective armor that helps him withstand Pokemon attacks.
* WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld: He's an International Police Agent who is attending Pokemon school. Justified since he's "undercover."

[[folder: Whi-Two]]
!!Whi-Two

The female protagonist of the [=B2W2=] chapter, Whi-Two was once a member of Team Plasma, having believed in their (false) ideals.

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Her history with Team Plasma which she now tries to hide.
* PlotCoupon: She is in possession of a chip that contains the blueprints to stop a machine Colress is building.
* TightsUnderShorts: Though her frilly shorts isn't too hard to be mistaken for a skirt.
* UndyingLoyalty: For N and the original Team Plasma, still believing in their just crusade to free Pokemon from humans. As such, she wasn't exactly thrilled to receive a Pokedex, the icon of Pokemon enslavement.

[[folder: X]]
!!X
[[quoteright:260:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/x_-_ekkusu_2622.jpg]]
The male protagonist of the XY chapter who used to be a strong Pokémon Trainer in his childhood. However, the pressure he got from the paparazzi eventually got to him. Years later, X is a shut-in who refuses to leave his room despite his friends’ protests.

* BerserkButton: The paparazzi. Seeing Alexa and Viola immediately angers him and forces him back into hiding.
* BrokenAce: He used to be a kid with great battling potential that could potentially rival the Elite Four and the Champion... until too much exposure from the papparazzi forced him into seclusion.
* TheCallKnowsWhereYouLive: Don't want to leave your room? Wait until your house gets torched by an evil organization after your stuff!
* ChildhoodFriends: With Y, Trevor, Tierno, and Shauna.
* CompositeCharacter: He has the blue eyes of the paler-skinned game version but the darker hair of the mid-toned one.
* DeadpanSnarker: A mild one. When Y yells at him to [[ExactWords say something]], he does [[LiteralMinded exactly that]].
* DoomedHometown: Vaniville Town is reduced to rubble in the second round of the arc.
* TheDragAlong: Even after Xerneas and Yveltal's battle destroy his town and Team Flare burns down his house, he still has no interest in seeing the world.
* FormerChildStar: Even though he wasn't an actor, the press still put an amazing amount of expectations and pressure on him as a young child.
* FlungClothing: Happens to to him at the end of the second chapter by Y which leaves him only in his boxers.
* HatesTheJobLovesTheLimelight: Inverted. He was a wonderful trainer, but hated the attention it got him.
* {{Hikikomori}}: He was once a famous trainer, but is now a shut-in who refuses to leave his room. It is all but implied that he had a horrible experience with the paparazzi.
* IconicItem: X is already in possession of the [[MagneticPlotDevice Mega Ring]], which Team Flare is after.
* ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies: X is unwilling to add more Pokemon to his team in fear that Team Flare will harm them.
* ParentalAbandonment: His parents work in another region. Y's mother, Grace, has been providing for him in their absence.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: The Savvy Guy to Y's Energetic Girl.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: Says this to Cassius, regarding Y.
* [[WhenSheSmiles When He Smiles]]: X's default expression is one of resigned depression, but Viola sees him [[http://i.imgur.com/MVmchoD.jpg?1 genuinely smiling]], she compliments how nice it looks and wants to take photographs.

!!Kanga and Li'l Kanga (Garu and Kogaru)
X's Kangaskhan and her child, respectively.

* BadassAdorable: Cute, baby Li'l Kanga.
* NotAllowedToGrowUp: Li'l Kanga is still an infant Kangaskhan despite having been with X for several years now. This seems to be because she refuses to leave her mothers pouch, imitating X who refuses to leave his home.
* ShockAndAwe: Knows Thunderbolt.
* SuperMode: They have access to their Mega Evolution, allowing Li'l Kanga to fight on her own.
* SuperStrength: Li'l Kanga after mega evolving.

!!Marisso
A Chespin given to X by Professor Sycamore (through Trevor) in hopes of getting X out of his depression. It later joins X's team after X saw how hard it worked in his battle against Professor Sycamore.

* {{Determinator}}: Despite it having a type disadvantage to Charmander, it's still willing to battle.
* GreenThumb: Primary type.
* RollingAttack: Knows Rollout.

!!Salamè
A Charmander that originally belongs to Professor Sycamore. X decides to take it with him after losing his battle against Professor Sycamore.

* CharacterTic: Has a habit of holding onto its tail.
* PlayingWithFire: Primary type.

!! Elèc
A wild Pokemon that originally stole Y's clothes when it was an Electrike. It eventually evolves into Manectric during it's first meeting with the group, and assists X in fighting against Team Flare grunts.

* ShockAndAwe
* SuperMode: It has access to it's Mega Evolution.

[[folder: Y]]
!!Yvonne "Y" Gābena (''Y na Gābena'')
[[quoteright:308:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/y_-_wai_4839.png]]
The female protagonist of the XY chapter, she is a Sky Trainer who is determined to bring her childhood friend X out into the world again. Y was previously trying to be a Rhyhorn racer in the past, but switched to her current interest.

* BerserkButton: Paparazzi and reporters, as they are the reason X refuses to leaves his home. That said, when Viola reveals she is the Santalune Gym Leader and offers the group temporary sanctuary, Y's opinion of her improves.
** Also pointing out her {{Malaproper}} tendencies.
* [[spoiler: CloseCallHaircut ]]
* ChildhoodFriends: With X, Trevor, Tierno, and Shauna.
* DoomedHometown: Vanivilee Town is completly destroyed in the second round of the arc.
* [[spoiler: HeroicBSOD: When she learns that her mother was captured by Team Flare.]]
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Played with. She's a better judge than she probably even realizes, noticing that something was off with Shauna [[spoiler: when Shauna ended up being brainwashed]] and correctly deducing that despite his friendship with the obviously unhinged Lysandre, Professor Sycamore is oblivious rather than evil. The problem is that she second guesses herself and doesn't always go for her gut instinct.
* HotBlooded: Y is yelling in almost every chapter (and mostly at X).
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: Has absolutely no reservations in stripping herself or her friends of their clothes in public.
* TheLeader: Type II/III hybrid of the FiveManBand of friends. She is also the one who keeps the group together.
* MagicSkirt: Y has an unfortunate tendency to get flung into walls. While this isn't so much a problem while she's in her flight suit, her DangerouslyShortSkirt really shouldn't be able to hide anything when she does.
* {{Malaproper}}: And she doesn't take it too well when it's pointed out.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: The Energetic Girl to X's Savvy Guy.
* TomboyishPonytail: She sometimes has her hair in the style of her NPC version.
* UnclePennybags: Young, female version. Likely a result of having a celebrity mom and having been a Rhyhorn racing herself, Y early on buys a lot of clothes in hopes of throwing Team Flare off their track and is the one who provided X his current outfit.
* TheWorfEffect: Y ''will'' be the first of the group to get knocked around. Justified, as she ''is'' stronger than Trevor, Tierno, and Shauna but X isn't likely to fight back unless he's being directly targeted, meaning that, by default, Y is the first to jump in the fray.

!! ''Fletchy (Yako-chan)''
Y's Fletchling.

* WindFromBeneathMyWings: Secondary type.
* {{Flight}}: Naturally, as a Flying type.
* NonElemental: Normal type.

!! ''Vuivui''
Y's Sylveon, which she first gets as an Eevee.

* BadassAdorable: As are all Fairy types.

* PuppyDogEyes: Knows Baby-Doll Eyes.

!! ''Kerokero''
Y's Froakie that originally belonged to Professor Sycamore.
