The anime is a re-telling of the Chinese classical novel ''Literature/JourneyToTheWest''....''JustForFun/InSpace''. The universe is a vast place, home to many different aliens, cyborgs and space creatures. To prevent conflict, peace is managed by various factions and groups - and those that dare disturb peace are treated as the lowest of the low, locked up in the most secure of prisons. Turmoil erupts when Planet Great Pluto, at the center of the universe, starts weakening, and the energy it emits starts having a negative effect on the universe - beasts that were once benevolent are now violent, natural disasters crop up here and there, and war and distortion starts to emit in every corner of the galaxy.

''Sci-Fi West Saga Starzinger (SF西遊記スタージンガー, Esu Efu Saiyūki Sutājingā)'' is a 1978 anime series produced by Creator/ToeiAnimation and created by Creator/LeijiMatsumoto.

Moon Princess Aurora is required to find what's the cause of this, before galactic peace is eternally broken. However, she can't do it alone - she needs the aid of three of the universe' most violent cyborgs - Jean Kugo, Don Hakka, and Sir Jogo - to help her. None of them have hands clean of blood, and they're all also not exactly happy about working with the Princess. But with the fate of the universe at stake, together they battle violent aliens and banish space creatures alike, in their journey to set right what was once wrong.

It ran from April 2, 1978 to August 24, 1979, with Yugo Serikawa serving as the director. It ended at 73 episodes in total.

Not the [[Manga/DragonBall first time]] [[DerivativeWorks/JourneyToTheWest that]] ''Literature/JourneyToTheWest'' was retold ''JustForFun/InSpace''. That iteration was more successful.

A bit of a GeniusBonus for those who read the original book - his name is Red Child there.
*{{Expy}}: Of the characters from ''Literature/JourneyToTheWest''. Jan Kugo is based on Son Wukong, Sir Djorgo is based on Sha Wujing, Don Hakka is based on Zhu Bajie and Princess Aurora is based on Tang Sangzang.
*{{Fanservice}}: One [[https://www.hmv.co.jp/artist_%E3%82%A2%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A1_000000000013179/item_SF%E8%A5%BF%E9%81%8A%E8%A8%98-%E3%82%B9%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B8%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AC%E3%83%BC-Vol-2_2644792 DVD cover]] depicts Princess Aurora wearing nothing but a small, white bikini, and showing that she's ''very'' buxom.
*FriendToAllChildren: Hakka loves children (and is a bit of a {{manchild}} himself), to the point that when he finds out that [[spoiler: the Kingdom of Topaznia]] has been deceiving it's schoolchildren, he declares that ThisIsUnforgivable.
-->'''Hakka:''' ''You deceived me, and even innocent children...I can't forgive this!''
*GreenSkinnedSpaceBabe: Aliens come in all sorts of colours, from Rasetsu's deathly pale skin, to the Queen of Great Pluto's lime green skin.
*HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Aurora is a blonde and willingly took up the mission to defend space because she wanted to protect the inhabitants of the galaxy, including the planet Earth, that provided her refuge after the Moon fell.
*HatePlague: Planet Amuru is cursed [[spoiler: by Golga]] to have a mind disease where it's various inhabitants fight to the death for no reason at all. Kugo is horrified to find out that the fight he witnessed between two Amuru men was actually between a father and son,
*HumansAreWhite: Averted. The main characters appear to be of East Asian descent, though it's kind of hard to tell with their names, that are Japanese versions of the Chinese characters from ''Literature/JourneyToTheWest''.
*InexplicableCulturalTies: Some of the alien planets (like Planet Rasetsu) feature churches, with pews and stained glass, and even Princess Aurora prays for peace, in what seems to be a Lunarian-equivalent of Christianity.
*YouKilledMyFather: King Gyuma is a GalacticConquerer wannabe and declares himself the defacto ruler of the world. [[spoiler: After his death]], he's succeeded by his son Prince Gaima, a cruel {{sadist}} who [[spoiler:takes his death]] as a personal humiliation and wants to reclaim his honour.
*{{Lunarians}}: The Moon has a thriving culture and is somewhat of a mini-planet in it's own right, with Aurora as the Princess.
*MaliciousSlander: Queen Rasetsu massacres Bellamis' men and pins the blame on Kugo for it. Bellamis, who actually cares for his men, is enraged and spars with Kugo, to her pleasure.
*OurDemonsAreDifferent: [[spoiler: Gorga is a demon lord, and the ancestor of King Gyuma and the Space Monster family. He has been sucking out the energy of the cosmos energy for years and manipulates the forces of nature to do his bidding]].
*ParadisePlanet: One of the planets is called "Planet Lovely", and it lives up to its name, being a near-heaven-on-Earth. Unfortunately, Queen Rasetsu turns that upside down when she dispatches Gamagin there.
*PinkIsFeminine: Guess what colour Princess Aurora's dress, space suit and accessories all are?
*PlanetBaron: Both Gyuma and his wife Rasetsu have planets named after them and govern them according to their own interests. [[spoiler: Gorga also controls Pluto.]]
*RaceLift: The characters from ''Literature/JourneyToTheWest'' were Chinese, but in the anime, most of the human characters are ethnically ambigious Asians. Sangzang is rewritten as a pale-skinned blonde woman, and the Bull/Cow Demons from the original story are reimagined as aliens.
*RavenHairIvorySkin: Andra, the alien girl Kugo befriends on Planet Goa, has pale skin and dark hair. She's also an AloofDarkHairedGirl, but Kugo manages to bring her out of her shell and the two bond over a shared love of combat.
*ShoutOut: Aurora and Queen Rasetsu are reminsicient of Princess Aurora and Maleficient from ''WesternAnimation/SleepingBeauty''...JustForFun/InSpace. The resemblance is [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/story_img_1.jpg uncanny]].
*WarIsGlorious: Andra believes so and she wishes to die in battle, like her father, who was a soldier. She [[BrokenBird lost her will to live]] ever since her father died and feels like if she dies the same way, she can honour him.
*WholePlotReference: Again, it's ''Literature/JourneyToTheWest''....''JustForFun/InSpace'', with a side dish of ''Literature/TheThreeMusketeers'' and some sprinkles of ''Anime/CaptainHarlock''.
*WeirdWeather: Because of the decrease in the galaxy's energy, the Earthern sun starts fizzing out, and the planet is hit by all sorts of abnormal weather events. This includes giant, {{robeast}} dinosaurs showing up out of nowhere and levelling Earthern cities.
*WorthyOpponent: Kugo deems Bellamis as one, admiring how he's the most honourable of any alien he's ever fought, in a stark contrast to King Gyamu and his family.
-->'''Kugo, episode 47''': ''You're a wonderful opponent. You're strong, cool and even more beautiful!''
