From YKTTW Working Title: The problem is free will
- A subversion or something: Some Christian theologians have maintained that humans have no free will because God has determined everything that will happen in advance... But He has still decided that some will do evil, suffer in this life, and/or not believe and be saved, so it doesn't involve getting rid of the evils. Oh, and He's still omnibenevolent.
Lale: Don't what religion that is, but it's the opposite of Christianity. God gave humans free will and a first choice to prove it. So, technically, the problem is The Evils of Free Will, but we decided it was worth it, and God doesn't stop us (instead offering us a chance to escape the consequences) because, no matter what Philip Pullman may tell you, He respects our right to free will.
