Nezumi: It's been a long time since I read the novel, but I could swear that in that, it wasn't actually from outer space. It came back on a satellite... but they ultimately realized that the satellite must have been contaminated in the upper atmosphere, rather than bringing it back from space — meaning it was an organism of highly exotic, but ultimately terrestrial original, hence why it could infect Earthly life despite biochemical barriers.
