Fire Walk: Is this actually an example, or not? Discuss.

  • Subversion: In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince the orphanage that Tom Riddle/Voldemort grew up in is described as "a miserable place to grow up," but the children appear well fed and healthy.
    • The staff isn't so much cruel as severely burnt out, too. In fact, it's a pretty regular orphanage. Does it really belong here?

Robert Bingham: Took this out:

In this troper's memory, Hansel and Gretel didn't get sent to an orphanage, but were sold to the mafia, who forced them to participate in some very horrific shit until they went out and out murderously insane. Unless they spent some time in one before they got sold to the mob, of course.

Whitewings: Check out this article. I don't recall the orphanage staff selling them. Renting out, perhaps...
