Prfnoff: This is an example of Disconnected Side Area:
- Super Mario World. Valley of Bowser had two side levels accessed from Donut Plains and Choco Island, which gave a small hint of both of the level design and the overworld, but you couldn't detour from them to the actual main levels, with the exits leading back to the worlds you entered the section from. At least the latter was literally about two levels from entering said final world properly.
CAD: It fits both descriptions. There's clear overlap.
