Pulled the Sluggy Freelance example - Torg's sword powering up is not a spell at all. It fits more or less in with Soylent Green.

This trope is mostly about the physical ingredients used in magic, including non-physical things treated as though they were physical, but there's been some slippage. The words of a spell are a different trope, as are the physical components (stirring the cauldron three times anticlockwise), magical diagrams and limitations on when the spell can be cast (only at full moon, only at Stonehenge). I'd rather keep them separate tropes. Any commnents?
