Working Title: Mind Hug: From YKTTW

I liked Mind Hug, but after much discussion decided to launch as Care-Bear Stare by popular demand.

Rogue 7: This page needs that XKCD comic on it. Even if it doesn't fit the theme at all. Unfortunately, I don't know how to go about uploading something like that.

Earnest: Dude, getting an upload account is awesome. I have wasted far too much time uploading pictures, but it's been worth it. Just go to the Media Uploader in Tools and use the Contact form to get one set up.

So It Begins: XKCD comic (cropped version) duly uploaded!

Urtzi: Why was the picture removed? Since I couldn't find a reason, I put it back up.

Citation that Nodwick's Piffany is indeed Lawful Good: here.

Lale: Does this trope always have a benign intention? What if it's used as a Lotus-Eater Machine without the machine, to make the victim too helplessly happy and content to fight? That question stopped me from adding Ma from Space Cases to the mix.

Ninjacrat: I'm pulling these two:

  • In Ringworld, Nessus maintains control of his shipmates with a tasp (a device to remotely stimulate the brain's pleasure center). In the short run, it makes the target too blissed out to act; in the long run, they're aware of the risk of becoming psychologically addicted if they get too many hits.
  • In Brave New World, police suppress a disturbance using an aerosol soma (a euphoric drug) dispenser and a recorded speech that has been specifically designed for maximum calming effect.
for just that reason. This trope is about the power of unconditional love, compassion &etc., not sinister Orwellian mind-control techniques.

Steve MB: Are the sinister Orwellian mind-control techniques capable of supporting their own trope?

Guessmyname: Removed the EGS example:

  • In El Goonish Shive, while having a dream Grace finally achieves peace with her violent side by hugging and accepting it [1], [2].

Because that's not really a Care-Bear Stare (though I suppose it could count as a literal Mind Hug - still not an example though). I believe there's a trope about simply hugging someone to break them out of insanity / brainwashing etc. If I can find it, I'll move it to there

  • That would be Cooldown Hug, though I think the EGS thing is a bit of both that and a Care-Bear Stare.
    • I always thought the Care-Bear Stare was about making stuff explode using the power of diabetes and rainbows...

fleb: Buffy's not an example. Xander's just talking, not injecting 10 cc's of love straight into her aorta.

* In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, when Willow snaps and tries to end the world after Tara's death, the combined powers of Buffy and Giles, who magically Took a Level in Badass can't defeat her. Only Xander can, by telling her that he loves her, no matter what.
