Working Title: Bluffing the Murderer: From YKTTW

  • In the little known movie From the Hip, Judd Nelson's newbie lawyer character is assigned the defense of an insane English professor (played by John Hurt) who may or may not have killed a prostitute with a claw hammer. Nelson razzle-dazzles the court (including the "Oh, God" defense — indicating that the murder victim is still alive and ready to testify; when the court turns to look at the door he claims that, since they all believed she was coming through the door, they can't find his client guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt.") The case starts to go his way and he feels the professor will be found not guilty; the professor then confesses to Nelson in his study. Now stuck (NOT doing his best to free his client could get Nelson disbarred), he maneuvers the professor into going crazy on the witness stand (the professor even grabs the hammer off the evidence table and slams it claw end first into the rail of the witness stand.)

Haven: Has this even been subverted with the sleuth attempting to bluff the murderer only to find out he had the wrong guy?
