As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
workingSearching in ATT/YKTS/etc. should include the poster
Would it be possible to add the posting troper to the field that "search questions" is searching? This would allow an efficient "find by troper" for ATT, YKTS and even the bug list...
closed Page Colors
Noticing that some complaints amount to the coloring. But most of them just consist of "the coloring is bad". Therefor, I have compiled a more specific chart of what should be done.
- Normal Pages:
- Grey headers: Make them blue. This is TV Tropes. Our primary color is blue.
- Negative Space: Make it light blue.
- Footer: Make it blue.
- YMMV Pages:
- Top Header: Make it dark blue. Make green button grey.
- Orange Headers: Make them dark blue as well. Make green button orange.
- Space Around Text: Make it grey.
- Negative Space: Make it a dark grey.
- Footer: Make it dark blue.
- Links: Make them orange when highlighted.
- Sub-page tabs: Make the outlines orange and the words dark blue.
- Sugar Wiki:
- Top Header: Make it bluish green. Replace bluish green button with yellow.
- Bluish Green Headers: Make the pink button yellow.
- Negative Space: Make it pink.
- Links: Make them bluish green.
- Nightmare Fuel:
- Top Header: Make it red. Make red button black.
- Space Around Text: Make it grey.
- Negative Space: Make it black.
closed Trope Finder Finder
I NEED a button that shows only YOUR Trope Finder/YKTTW/YKTS/other stuff like that entries. I can NEVER find mine to check for answers- or at least be able to search by username.
Edited by toonowlclosed Put Edit comments back at the top when they're seen in the Edit-History
If the edit is really long, it can be kind of difficult to find the comment left behind by the person who made the edit since they're now at the bottom of it.
closed Reduce Sidebar Width
The sidebar takes up 1/4+ of the page width. This is a little too wide for easy browsing.
closed Make Discussion pages more visible
Since these are important for finding and resolving problems with the pages, aside from the forums, why are they barely visible? Perhaps they should...
- Have a counter with the amount of comments posted, like a certain other wiki does, or like how we do in the Reviews pages. Even if you don't follow the page, you'll know there's at least something new posted.
- Don't hide it under the "More" menu on work pages at all.
- Have own Follow button and separate the updates in the Following list from the main page edits.
- Let users delete own posts (may not be as good of an idea because users can't delete own query and forum posts either)
closed "Engineer" role for certain users
As discussed in the Hiring mods (now locked) and Appeal to the moderation threads in the forums, it would be a great relief to our hard-working moderators if certain users were entrusted with limited versions of the mod team's tools.
This would spread out the grunt work among a larger portion of the site's users, lightening the mods' hefty workload.
The following powers come to mind when it comes to things engineers could do:
- Editing locked pages
- Hooking crowners to forum threads
- Locking and unlocking forum threads and ATT queries.
- Clocking/unclocking forum threads.
- Moving pages to a different name while preserving their editing history.
- Managing video examples (accepting, rejecting, or deleting them)
Not every engineer would necessarily have all of these powers. And of course, such powers would only be granted to active, trustworthy, long-time users who have proven themselves to hold the wiki's best interests at heart. Abusing these privileges would lead to them being immediately revoked.

I believe that it would be incredibly convenient if your profile included a link to your troper page.
workingHat and Bomb reason
Yes, another TLP-related wish, I would like if the TLP compelled users to give a reason whenever they hat or bomb a draft. See, there's a lot of issues that I think this would fix-
- Good drafts with some bombs might be allowed to launch regardless if it turns out the bomb reasons are for something that was fixed, like a poor title.
- There are a lot of poor drafts that still get 5+ hats, and knowing the reason why it was hatted will really help- especially when there are shenanigans going on. If there are multiple hats on a draft but they don't have great reason to be there, the draft can be more easily prevented from launching.
- A lot of people just hat and bomb without stopping on the draft to give their opinion, which, especially in the case of bombs, can be really stressful and difficult for a sponsor who doesn't know what it is they've done right and wrong.
- In general, I think it'll really make people think harder about what constitutes a good and bad reason for hatting and bombing something. As it stands, it seems like hats are used less as a "launch now" and more as a show of support, and bombs are often misunderstood as being anything other than "this isn't ready to be launched".
closed Classic view option
Not so much as completely rolling back the changes, but could something be added to allow us to view the site before this most recent update? The "TV Tropes 1. 3 Released!" thread is basically an echo chamber of people asking to change it back because the new design is boring, gray and looks sloppy.
closed Old Random Buttons
The new Random buttons look both childish and three decades old; they don't go with the new look, in regular or Night Vision. I miss the dice.
closed Readding watchlist button and other buttons at the bottom of a forum thread page
As requested here, for navigability reasons.
closed Would it be possible to implement some sort of colour change mechanism to the site?
Due to a very particular disorder of the eye, the present layout with it being largely white and gray is hurting my eyes. While night vision does aid me, it is still very difficult to use the site on it in certain sections.
Would it be possible to add in some sort of mechanism to change colour theme, such as a list of various colour options imposed on the site as is?
closed Give a warning when you're trying to leave the editing screen
I've just accidentally closed my browser while making a fairly large edit, losing about 10 minutes of progress. When you're editing Wikipedia and accidentally attempt to close the tab, you're asked if you're sure you want to leave as changes made to the page will be lost. Such a confirmation prompt would be very handy for TVT as it effectively stops a source of data loss. Thank you.
closed Give us the floating Heading 2 back
Since the design change around 2017, the second hierarchy heading enforces a section break which can create an awkward blank space on pages with large images. See example below for the Shutter Island page which had a much better composition in the past.
Edited by eroockclosed Lock reasons
When an article is locked by staff, it should have a reason for locking that is displayed when you try to edit the page.
Edited by RamenChefworkingTool for wick checking
Something that would be handy in Trope Repair Shop for checking whether tropes are being correctly used would be a tool that, when you enter a page into it, counts the total # of wicks, randomly selects a portion of those wicks, and generates a list of the selected wicks. That number would need to be fairly sizeable; the count mentioned in the TW thread that suggested this was either 50 or the square root of the total # of wicks, rounded up, whichever is better for the size of the page. One possible option could be for the tool to tell you the total # of wicks and allow you to select a number to pull, or default to the aforementioned rounded square root.
Edited by WillbyrworkingRetract bombs and hats
There should be a way to remove your hat or bomb on a draft w/out switching to the other vote. There are plenty of times when a draft no longer deserves bombs, but also doesn't deserve a hat.
closed Laconic hover feature
When you hover your mouse over a trope link, it shows the Laconic if there is one.

It would be nice if the button for the discussion page changed in some way to indicate that there's something there
