Usage outside of TRS and IP

Moderators can hook crowners on any thread, including those outside of IP or TRS. Sometimes crowners are used in other subforums, normally so that votes don't have to be counted manually.

Depending upon the purpose of these crowners, they may have different requirements to the generic Workshop crowners. Crowners in other subforums are typically accompanied by an Ask The Tropers post to draw attention to the vote.

However, there are also some scenarios where we actively avoid crowners. These are often cases where we prefer to avoid anonymous voting. Crowners are not used for:

• Proposed examples for the Magnificent Bastard and Complete Monster tropes. These tropes use a forum thread approval process, with manual voting to minimise misuse. Votes are not anonymous.
• Trope Launch Pad (TLP), which has its own system of hats and bombs. Hats and bombs, which aren't anonymous, are used to determine whether or not a new trope is ready to launch. TLP may still use crowners for other questions, such as trope name choices.
• The Content Violation Discussions (CVD) sub-forum. CVD does not use crowners or anonymous voting. These decisions need to be based on The Content Policy, not popularity.

This might not be the right thread, but this post made me realize I know next to nothing about hollering. I know that it's a way to contact a moderator, but that's about it. I don't know how it differs from sending a PM through this page. There should really be an Administrivia page about hollering: what it is, when to use it, and when not to use it. It should also explain the one-holler-a-week limit that Amonimus alluded to.

I suppose there's enough information out there about hollering. However, I would also like to draw your attention to the Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop page. In the "Making a TRS Thread About a Broken Page" section, the page implies that the first post in this thread is required reading for anyone who might want to bring a trope to the Trope Repair Shop. Yet, the first advice given by this post is to "include the action you're proposing in the thread title. For example, if you want to rename This Troper, the thread title should be 'Rename' and the text in page name field should be 'This Troper'." This is a relic of a bygone era when the Trope Repair Shop didn't have a list of predefined reasons. It's no longer possible to follow this advice, so it should be replaced.

And that was just the first advice! You could probably find a lot more outdated advice in there if you were actually looking for it.

This post was made in 2009 hasn't been edited since 2016. Either the link at Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop should point here instead, or the entire post needs to be rewritten.

That thread has been dormant since 2012 and is currently in the FAQs Morgue, so I'm not sure that updating it is necessary unless it gets moved back to the FAQ forum.

Edit: Apparently it was last updated in 2016 (just without any new posts being made), but I'm not sure if we need it when we have Administrivia pages covering how to use TRS.

Mod hat off because I'm just discussing an idea this time instead of taking action. I've been thinking for a while that Quotes.Quotes Looking For An Article could safely be cut or redirected to Quotes Wiki because collecting random quotes without them being tied to an article strikes me as off-mission. The page is indexed as Just for Fun, but so is Quotes Wiki itself, and I feel that Quotes Wiki is a better fit for Just for Fun than Quotes.Quotes Looking For An Article due to the former being organized better and more closely tied to the site's mission.

A while back, Examples Searching for a Trope was redirected to Trope Finder due to a combination of redundancy and Trope Finder's format being better suited to finding tropes.

Quotes.Quotes Looking For An Article looks like a potential sandbox for turns-out-not-existing Quotes cleanup, but since there's no such project, quotes with own works can be moves to Quotes/ subpages of respective works and the rest cut.

Transplanting quotes from works to those works' Quotes/ subpages and then getting rid of the page afterward sounds fine.

Edit: I checked and the page only has 842 inbounds despite being made in 2008, so we can do a full-fledged cut due to the low amount of offsite traffic (if transplanting and cutting is what we go with).

"This seems to be a trope but I'm not sure which one" is essentially Trope Finder; Quotes Looking For An Article is very clearly the quote version of that. (It originally started life as Quote Bin, the quotes version of Title Bin; given why the latter was removed, this fact doesn't help its case in the slightest.) ^note And it got moved because "someone" (past me) unaware of Quote Bin created Quotes.Quotes Looking For An Article and someone else (don't remember who) decided that was a better name. It sure was the "people can just do things" days back then...

Wouldn't be against removing it as an official article. I'd probably want to hold on to any quotes in a sandbox that couldn't find a new home, though if we're moving to works pages it seems unlikely that there will be a whole lot of those if any.

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

You know, there is a forum game that would have a field day with that page if they knew about it.
