I have been playing Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag on the Wii U, and I have encountered a bug that makes me unable to find an assassination contract target; this makes me unable to complete a challenge. I also can't select the hidden blades and use the blowpipe after going through a diving bell location. Does anyone else have these bugs? I don't want to list them here if they only happened to me.
In Disney Infinity for the Xbox 360, if I'm playing co-op toybox with my brother and the second player drops out via the ingame menu instead of signing out of their xbox live account directly, the game will freeze and cannot be unfozen. You need to hard-reset the console and everything. Does anyone else have this issue? I don't want to list it here if it's only happened to us.
Would "Error 37" count as a Game-Breaking Bug? It DOES render Diablo III Unplayable and DID spark its own meme.
I was thinking of adding the "Pip Element Grid" glitch from Chrono Cross. What happens is that when you turn off the game console, Pip's 7th and 8th element grid levels disappear. Not only does this leave you with fewer spells to work with, but it prevents you from using Pip's 3rd tech. But I'm not sure if this is "game-breaking" per se, or just highly annoying. Thoughts?
"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"Removed:
- A devious glitch with the Text Parser in Leisure Suit Larry 2: Looking For Love (In Several Wrong Places) snuck into the game just the night before the game shipped: Near the end of the game, the player is expected to combine an airsick bag with a bottle (to make a Molotov cocktail, the bag serving as its wick). The only acceptable input was some variation of "put airsick bag in bottle", because a) the parser was (badly) written specifically to understand fully formed English phrases instead of "adventure game shorthand", b) a completely unrelated bug had just been fixed by another coder by turning the word "bag" into a verb and c) no one cared to fix it in time, because Sierra's testing policy at the time was to use the longest possible phrase in a situation and see if it works. Contrary to popular belief, the input does not require the word "the" several times; the point is that "airsick bag" works, whereas the common shorthand "bag" doesn't (since it's a verb).
One more oversight and almost-game-breaking bug for Beyond Good And Evil:
- At one point in the endgame you are held in a tractor beam and have to use the hovercraft to enter the enemy ship and deactivate it. Afterwards, you are supposed to re-enter your ship to proceed with the story, but what if you try to do some exploring in the hovercraft instead (which the tractor beam had been preventing you from)? You reach a point where the guard towers start firing at you for attempting to leave authorized airspace (when you are in the spaceship, they mark the borders of the playing area), doing no damage but pushing you away from them - but away from the enemy ship and the Beluga, too, eventually getting you stuck against the edge of the canal and the tower still blasting at you. (After about a minute the tower stopped firing [having finally pushed you out of its range], making it possible to return and continue playing the game.)
Can't you beat the last boss of Link's Awakening by shielding and using the sword at the same time? I didn't even know you could kill it with Magic Powder for a few years. Another potential game breaking glitch is the one in which you can't complete Level 7 because the wrecking ball is stuck somewhere, but then again, there's no way this game can be unbeatable as you could always beat it via glitches.
I'm conflicted about the image for this trope. It's well drawn and appears to illustrate the trope, but it's focus is the Missingno glitch, which is relatively harmless and not considered a game breaking bug. Would it be a better idea to replace it with an image that shows a truly game breaking bug?
Hide / Show RepliesI've seen the thread that image was made for.
It's not Missingno. Just loks similar.
Does Game Breakers induced by Game Genie codes count? My old NES game genie manual included a code for Super Mario Bros that (I think) gave you endless Fire Flower Mario. BUT the code included a warning that if you were to use this code, then after the final boss battle, you had to IMMEDIATELY enter the doorway that opens, or the game will pause forever and even restarting the console won't fix it.
Correction. The glitch in in SMB 3 and the text in the Game Genie manual read thusly: If you use any of the next five codes to defeat Bowser, stand in front of the door and hold "Up". as soon as the door opens, you will pass through into the chamber where the Princess is held. If you don't do this, you may get caught in Bowser's time trap and the game will pause forever!
Edited by BlazingskiesRemoved the following entries, as they involve no bugs, and thus belong in Unwinnable:
- The video game version of The Hobbit had a puzzle in Smaug's lair that required you to push blocks into holes in order to cause the water level in a trench to rise. Said blocks were situated on different elevation levels of the trench, and accidentally pushing a block off of a ledge and saving afterward would require you to start the whole game over.
- In Pokemon Red and Blue, in order to pass the gatekeepers to Saffron city, you must give any of the four guards one of the drinkable items: Water, Soda Pop, or Lemonade any one time. Being an item that you have to buy, it is possible to not have enough money to purchase these items. Although you would have to work for it, you can use the itemfinder to find every item up to that point in the game, sell all of your items in your inventory and PC, beat every trainer in the game up to that point since you cannot fight non-Elite Four trainers more than once and lose all your money through Pokemon battles since every loss cuts your money in half. You can put yourself in a position in which you cannot generate anymore money to even buy the drinkable items you need to give to the gatekeepers. No wonder Pokemon centers don't charge money to heal Pokemon.
- This oversight is fixed in the remakes, Firered and Leafgreen. The game changes the drinkable item needed to give to the guards into the Key Item "Tea" given to you by an old lady in Celadon city for free.
- Technically this only applies in Pokemon Red. In Pokemon Blue you can encounter the wild pokemon Meowth on route 8 right before reaching Celedon city. Meowth learns the attack Payday, which will give the player money every time it is used in battle. Meowth is exclusive to pokemon Blue and will not appear in Pokemon Red, thus Pokemon Red and Pokemon Yellow are the only versions in which this situation can occur.
- Unless, of course, you are out of Pokeballs with no money to pay for one and have no Meowth.
- Then you could trade for one.
- Unless, of course, you are out of Pokeballs with no money to pay for one and have no Meowth.
...just pointed out that the only reason iD Software's version of Pharaoh (from TNT Evilution) cannot be beaten without bug abuse is because iD confirmed that the methods that permit Pharaoh to be beaten (prior to the fix) rely on bugs - the same bugs they tried to prevent the use of back in Doom 1 Episode 3.
in other words, the unpatched level requires canon bug abuse to beat it.

Oops, I think it's been listed before.

So if they're effectively the same thing except one is good and the other is bad, why is this trope considered Main and Good Bad Bugs considered YMMV?
