Speaking of Dino Crisis, all the sequels sucked... but an RE 4-style reboot/remake/re-whatever would be awesome.

2 was good.

Yeah, the first two games were good, even if 2 did catch a little bit of flak for shifting away from the survival horror premise of the first game. 3 was crap, though. If this series ever comes back, a) it needs to return to the plot threads left by 2 (which ended on a major cliffhanger) and b) a RE4-styled focus on action would probably be a good fit.

A massive cliffhanger? Could they possibly have resolved it in the spinoff Dino Stalker (Gun Survivor 3)?

I need to vent real quick, if I may.

So far, Code Veronica is not a bad game. It does however have one incredibly bad design choice near the end and its just pissing me off.

Unmarked spoilers herein!

Here's the sitch: as Chris, I gave the serum to Claire. A cutscene later I'm playing as Claire again. So here's what I do:

  • Since I'm limping, I take three green herbs (prefering to save my red/green mixes for endbosses)
  • I get all the stuff in the room.
  • I put the shotgun on the hook so I can get the grenade ammo, then reclaim the shotgun.
  • I choose my weapons (for this bit, the Bow Gun and the Grenade Launcher with Grenade and Flame rounds) and stock some herbs.
  • Hallway. Kill the two tentacle things, push the stands to get more ammo.
  • Jail cells. Kill the one zombie, get more bow gun ammo, get the file and turn the valve on the cannon.
  • Break the crystal and get the card, being careful not to get splatted.
  • Use the card in that one room, run to the end where I see Steve turn into a Nosferatu.
  • Steve hits me twice, I die.
  • Game says "Retry?" I pick "Yes."

... And I'm back to when I first took control of Claire!!! So everything I just did, I have to re-do all over again! "So why didn't you save before confronting Steve" you ask? Because there isn't a fucking typewriter! Yeah, there's a box, but no typewriter. Claire doesn't get a typewriter until after you fight Steve (or does she?). Fuck you, Capcom. Just fuck you.

More importantly, when I picked "retry" my natural assumption was that I would get to pick up in the very room I had entered, perhaps just before the cutscene, not that I would have to re-do the entire sequence! I mean, I know it only takes like five minutes, but those five minutes start to wear on you when you're repeating them over and over. Just let me go right to Steve!

Sigh.

I don't mind Steve being hard. I do mind having to retrace my steps every time I want a rematch. Dammit, Capcom.

Now, again: I actually like Code Veronica so far, but it does have a lot of irritating design choices, of which this is such a one.

Yes, the final Claire section is a bitch. Even worse is that whatever's left on her after you escape Monster Steve is Gone Forever. Then you get back to Chris and have to immediately fight a difficult boss.

Plan ahead.

Yeah, that bit me in the ass the hard way. I had assumed that once I had Claire, I would have her for the rest of the game, so I dumped all of Chris' stuff except for the knife.

And no, I didn't win the fight that time.

I have finally beaten the game though, and to be honest after that, I think I'm going to take a small break from Resident Evil. It's not that it was a totally terrible experience, its just that after marathoning four games in a row, I'm burned out.

I never figured out what the Luger Replica was for. Anyone know?

Unlocks Steve as a playable character in Code Veronica's alternate mode.

Well then I guess I might as repost my question here. (I'm especially interested in your views on this Moe Dantes)

How would you rate the games you've played from best to worst?

My preferences: (from fav to least fav)

  • 2
  • 3
  • CV
  • 1
  • 0
  • 5
  • 4

Yeah, I really didn't like 4 all that much. It wasn't the gameplay for me, it was the overall design. It was just... bland and boring. It felt too cold.

Also, I'm not all that fond of the Plaga as a villainous force. sad

I loved 2 and 3. Raccoon City is my favourite part of the RE story. waii

I haven't played the spinoffs or RE 5, but...

  • 4
  • 2
  • 3
  • 1
  • CVX

I put 4 ahead of 2 for the improvements to gameplay, but 2 has a better atmosphere. It helps that Leon is my favourite RE character, so both are great.

^^ I can hardly remember it! I played it over ten years ago, and only had the Claire disk at that.

Here's how I'd rank the ones I've played:

  • 2
  • 1
  • Survivor
  • 3
  • CV
  • Gaiden

Though, I haven't beaten Survivor or Gaiden. My judgment may change once I see the endings.

EDIT: By the way Ginger, I'm surprised and delighted to see you here. I didn't know you were a gamer!

4 > 5 > 2

That being said, I liked 2's story and presentation over 5's, but holy hell, the controls were just so archaically bad. It was like some kind of jerky puppet show. That's why I liked the overhaul in 4; it made things much more workable, which ultimately led to a more fun experience ("classic" zombies be damned).

[up] Uh... I thought the controls in 4 were INFINITELY (and I stress that word as much as I possibly can) more clunky than those of the originals. It must be a YMMV thing.

again, it isn't nostalgia, I played 4 BEFORE 2.

And I played 2 as both a kid and a few years before I picked up 4. I never said 4 and 5 were perfect in term of controls, but compared to 2 (and again, I stress that this is my opinion) they felt less clunky and more natural. However, from what I've seen with reviews and in other sectors of the net, the general opinion is that 4 was an improvement as far as control scheme goes.

[up] I didn't mean to sound mean. I just never understood why people praised the controls of 4 so much. They alone aren't why 4 is my least favourite RE game (no it's the setting and the design aesthetic that did that) but they just felt a hell of a lot more constrictive.

but since EVERYONE else seems to love RE 4's controls I guess that makes me wrong waii
