Season 1, Episode 20: Prince Hippo

Tropes That Appear In This Episode:

  • Atlantis: As depicted in any form of media, the city of Atlantis is not just an underwater city, but it's also the birthplace of Hippocampus.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • Tyrannis has a whistle that shatters Hippo's helmet when he plays it. This is later used against the Atlanteans before they attack.
    • Hippo's tears causes strong sea currents that devastate everything around them. He later uses this to free himself, Tyrannis and Schlub from jail.
  • Eats Babies: Hippo's mother reveals that she ate much of his litter, and even considers having more just because she craves eating them.
  • Fingore: Hippo cuts off his patient, Philbert's finger so it will block the hole in his neck. However, Philbert ends up bleeding so much that he passes out.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • The Atlanteans are introduced sinking Krapopolis' first naval vessel on their arrival. This will turn out not to be accidental.
    • Deliria does not recognize one of her priestesses, which seems like her usually being oblivious to everyone unimportant to her, but turns out to be because they're not one of her priestesses but a witch infiltrating her good graces.
  • Funny Background Event: While Tyrannis and Hippo are arguing, Hippo's patient Philbert is shown trying to cover his bleeding hand after losing his finger until he eventually passes out from blood loss.
  • Had to Be Sharp: Hippo justifies not wanting to go to Atlantis with this, saying he's a Self-Made Man that managed to overcome the dangers of the open ocean and the physical rigors of being an aquatic being on land through his own ingenuity. He reiterates this when he denounces the ease and acceptance of living among his own people in Atlantis.
  • Harmful Healing: Hippo's solution to accidentally nicking a surgery patient's neck is to plug the hole with the patients finger, sew it into place, then sever the finger. Naturally this just leads to the patient bleeding out of his new finger stump.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Hippo's mother tolerates one of her attendees brushing up against her body inappropriately because he's useful. Her patience with this runs out when Atlantis' invasion of Krapopolis is thwarted and he does it in the middle of her swearing revenge, so she pounces on him to vent her frustration.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: Hippo is revealed to not only be an Atlantean, but the crown prince of Atlantis.
  • Shown Their Work: While depicted as already submerged, the portrayal of Atlantis is otherwise accurate since in the original story it was a foreign country that attacked Greece.
  • The Stinger: The credits show Philbert, the guy whom Hippo was trying to operate on in the beginning of the episode, becoming a vigilante by night.
  • Swapped Roles: In Atlantis, Tyrannis and Shlub are the ones that are physically disadvantaged, while Hippo can move around better than he ever could on land, something he wastes no time in taunting them over.
  • Swiss-Army Tears: Hippo crying underwater generates a benthic storm, essentially a massive surge of current that destroys his surroundings. He exploits this in the third act to break out of jail.
