While the band themselves had no part in it, this still deserves mention: As an April Fools Joke, the website Encyclopedia Metallumnote (an internet music database compiling information on various metal bands, which is infamous for its strict criteria on acceptance when it comes to genres that are often disputed, such as most -core music and hair metal) added the band to its database after the administrators supposedly determined that the band's debut album, Curb, was "metal enough".note Specifically, they cited it was similar enough to albums by Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, who are accepted on the site; the former being somewhat of a Broken Base due to it being included on the basis of Badmotorfinger, but a band like Periphery isn't. While it's not the first time that a prank in this vein has happenednote (in 2009, the archives added Korn to the database on a similar basis.) unlike the first time, which several people actually took seriously, this time people actually caught on, and as a result, the page was vandalized, and several joke reviews praising the band's discography were submitted.note highlights include the band playing at the 2012 NHL awards due to Bathory having scheduling conflicts that prevented them from playing "Blood on Ice", guitarist Ryan Peake remarking that Manilla Road, an Ensemble Dark Horse on the site, were "The best band he'd heard in Sasakatchewan", Chad Kroeger remarking that he lost his virginity at a horse racing track, bassist Mike Kroeger being over 100 years old, attendees doing nothing to help a man who was scaling a 40 ft wall to get into a concert for free because "he's a Nickelback fan", and the band's drummer being related to Chris Barnes.Unfortunately, the entry was taken down the following daynote somewhat amusingly, Chad Kroeger himself would later legitimately get added to the site, albeit due to a guest appearance on Devin Townsend's Empath.
At the start of the video for "This Afternoon", there are a group of nerds organising a house party. A van starts pulling up outside with the party's "tunage". Watch the lead nerd's face fall when he realises his friend brought him a Bound and Gagged Nickelback.
