It Came from Another World! is the second film by Christopher R. Mihm and the second film in the Mihmiverse Shared Universe. It is notable for serving as the direct sequel to The Monster of Phantom Lake, making it the only film in the Mihmiverse to act as a direct follow-up to the film that preceded it.
Professor Jackson is once again our main character, as he is sent to track down his missing colleague and best friend, Doctor Frasier, who has yet to report in after an extended research trip in the area around Phantom Lake. With the assistance of Canoe Cops Sven and Gustav, Professor Jackson goes of in search of Doctor Frasier, who claims to have lost track of time after discovering a mysterious meteor deep in the forest.
It is later revealed that the meteor contained an alien intelligence called "The King of the Universe", who takes possession of Doctor Frasier's body and begins seeking an appropriate host for his queen. Naturally, he chooses Professor Jackson's girlfriend, Julie Ann Saint Marie. Once again, Professor Jackson and the Canoe Cops must save the world.
This film provides examples of:
- Abhorrent Admirer: Elizabeth to Doctor Frazier. He seems less disturbed about waking up in a strange place as he does waking up next to a nerdy young lady.
- Animal Motifs: Elizabeth's bedroom is decorated with owl-themed artwork and figures and she sleeps with a plush owl doll.
- Beat Cop: The Canoe Cops - a special division of the Phantom Lake Police Department, who patrol the lake in a canoe instead of a patrol car.
- Big "NO!": Professor Jackson's reaction to Doctor Frasier's death.
- Body Horror: Doctor Frasier's body is taken over by an alien intelligence
- Came from the Sky: The meteor.
- Cloud Cuckoolander: Officer Sven.
- Cop and Scientist: Gustav and Professor Jackson.
- Creator Cameo: Christopher R. Mihm appears as the priest officiating Professor Jackson's wedding.
- Credits Gag: The closing credits show the footage of Professor Jackson's wedding.
- Also, there is a credit for "Redundant Credits by Josh Craig and Christopher R. Mihm."
- Distinguished Gentleman's Pipe: Professor Jackson always has one.
- Dramatic Pause: Professor Jackson... takes quite a few of... these.
- Early-Installment Weirdness:
- Though set after the events of The Monster of Phantom Lake, Professor Jackson does not recognize Gustav and Sven despite having met them in the earlier film.
- Gustav and Sven were also implied to have died in The Monster of Phantom Lake.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Professor Jackson. Even his girlfriend just calls him Professor.
- Exactly What It Says on the Tin: The title says it all.
- Fish Eyes: Doctor Frasier develops these when he is possessed.
- Genius Ditz: While his head is in the clouds most of the time, Sven can identify most of the complex scientific equipment Professor Jackson handles and can keep up with his jargon.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Doctor Frasier sacrifices himself to destroy The King Of The Universe.
- Homage: To 1950s Sci-Fi Horror in general. To It Conquered the World and It Came from Outer Space in specific, as the plot deals with an alien intelligence taking control of people telepathically and the intelligence being tied to a meteorite.
- The bug-eyes effect used to show Dr. Frasier has been possessed resembles the effects used for the alien's eyes in Killers From Space.
- "I Know You Are in There Somewhere" Fight: Professor Jackson trying to get through to the possessed Doctor Frasier.
- The Man in the Mirror Talks Back: Doctor Frasier has this happen when the alien informs him that it has taken control of his body.
- The Noodle Incident: Gustav and Sven believe Professor Jackson's story about Doctor Frasier being possessed by aliens because it sounds "all too familiar." When Jackson is stunned by this and asks what that means, Gustav says that's a story for another time.
- Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Professor Jackson and Doctor Frasier.
- When asked what he is a professor of, Professor Jackson just says "Science."
- The Power of Love: Professor Jackson is able to break the mind control on Miss Saint Marie by proposing to her.
- The Professor: Professor Jackson, naturally.
- Science Hero: Professor Jackson and Doctor Frasier.
- Sequel: To The Monster of Phantom Lake.
- Shout-Out: Multiple.
- The poster of the film is similar to the poster of famous B-Movie Plan 9 from Outer Space.
- Reference is made to a "flux capacitor" in one of Professor Jackson's inventions.
- Professor Jackson orders the King of the Universe to "cease any and all supernatural activity and return forthwith to your place of origin of the nearest convenient parallel dimension."
- As Doctor Frasier dies after sacrificing himself to kill the King of the Universe, he tells Professor Jackson that "I have been... and always shall be... your friend."
- The 'Verse
- Professor Jackson, Gustav and Sven all previously appeared in The Monster of Phantom Lake.
- Deanne McDonald reprises her role as Elizabeth, in a brief cameo where it is implied Doctor Frasier wound up having a one-night stand with her while under the influence of the meteor.
- Those Two Guys: Gustav and Sven.
