Fanfic / Break My Heart, Break Your Heart

Go To

There is a schism growing between the murderous sniper known as Widowmaker and Amélie Lacroix, the dancer and loving wife that she used to be before Talon abducted and brainwashed her. Lena "Tracer" Oxton sees that schism, even when no one else can. Clinging desperately to the hope that Amélie might still be saved, Tracer sets out on a dangerous mission to bring back her friend and true love.

Break My Heart, Break Your Heart is an Overwatch fanfic by thesilvergoddess, hosted on AO3 and Fanfiction.net. While the core of the fic is the relationship between Tracer and Widowmaker, it expands into an epic story involving almost every major Overwatch character.

This story contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Ax-Crazy: Reaper. Oh lordy, Reaper. This story makes canon Reaper look well-balanced. See Bloodier and Gorier below.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: Reaper's scenes alone far surpass the usual level of violence in Overwatch canon.
  • Body Horror: What was done to Amélie to turn her into Widowmaker was not pleasant, up to and including an implant in her brain that was rigged to kill her if it was ever damaged. It takes Mercy performing complex brain surgery to restore Amélie to semi-normal. There's also the descriptions of what Reaper's degeneration feels like...
  • Calling Your Attacks: Used to awesome effect in the finale, as voice-activation codes for the cast's Ultimate abilities.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Widowmaker throughout the story as Amélie resurfaces.
  • Depraved Bisexual: Before his transformation happened, Reaper had intimate relationships with both Soldier 76 and Mercy, and he's abso-freaking-lutely depraved, so he counts.
  • Dying as Yourself: In the end, Gabriel Reyes surfaces from within Reaper as he lies dying, just long enough to say goodbye to his former teammates.
  • Dysfunction Junction: Where to begin? There's Tracer, nearly getting herself killed multiple times trying to bring Amélie back when even Amélie isn't sure that's a good idea. There's Widowmaker/Amélie herself, with both sides of her psyche battling for dominance. There's Mercy, wracked with guilt to the point of alcoholism over her role in Gabriel Reyes's transformation into Reaper. There's D.Va, suffering through the consequences of being a Child Soldier. There's Reaper, who has gone even more Ax-Crazy than in canon...
  • Everybody Has Lots of Sex: Boy howdy. Mercy and Pharah are having sex. Mei and Zarya are having sex. Genji and Zenyatta are having sex. Soldier 76 and McCree are having sex, and 76 and Gabriel Reyes (and Reyes and Mercy) used to have sex before Reyes went off the deep end. Tracer and Emily have sex. Tracer and Widowmaker eventually have sex, and then them having sex takes up most of Chapter 62, which is called "Sex"...
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Chapter 62: Sex.
  • Mirror Match: D.Va in her MEKA versus Evil Talon MEKA in the finale. D.Va wins via the creative application of Death from Above.
  • Only Mostly Dead: Tracer, in the penultimate chapter, who gets shot by Widowmaker after Reaper uses a Trigger Phrase to make her personality resurface.
  • Pre-Climax Climax: Again, Chapter 62.
  • Preserve Your Gays: The Bury Your Gays trope is Averted and Lampshaded by Tracer when Mercy revives her: "Holy shit, I'm an immortal lesbian!"
  • Related in the Adaptation: Emily, Tracer's ex-girlfriendnote , is one of Torbjorn's daughters in this story... an illegitimate one, at that.
  • Sanity Slippage: Reaper gets worse than canon. Way, way worse. By the finale, Mercy's losing it too.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: D.Va begins showing signs of severe PTSD after returning from a mission in Brazil in which she had to kill human combatants for the first time. She also has a bad case of Survivor's Guilt from a mission in Korea where she had to sacrifice her team to complete the mission objective.
  • These Hands Have Killed: D.Va gets hit with this hard.
  • Would Hurt a Child: One of the many things that make Reaper terrifying in this story. After killing a former Talon agent and his wife, he indoctrinates both of their children into Talon as essentially his slaves.
