Joseph Eggleston "Joe" Johnston II (born May 13, 1950) is an American film director and former effects artist at Industrial Light & Magic.
Working with George Lucas and ILM, he designed Boba Fett's armor and AT-ATs and won an Oscar as part of the Best Visual Effects recipients for Raiders of the Lost Ark. After he made his name in visual effects, he began getting cracks at directing effects-driven films under his technical expertise. He's known for directing action films (mainly for Disney) that appeal to broad audiences. His films are some of the most triumphant proof in Hollywood that action films don't need to be Darker and Edgier, R-rated, or full of gratuitous sex in order to be entertaining.
In addition to his work in films, Johnston is also the author of several nonfiction books and three sourcebooks, and one novel in the Star Wars franchise.
