So, how do you guys feel about films retconning certain aspects of the narrative? Do you think that retcons in general are necessary for some films?

[up]This because Mufasa: The Lion King is retconing Mufasa into a commoner adopted by royals?

No, just retcons in general.

Its hard to say whether or not retcons are good or necessary, "in general."

Its such a broad topic, and obviously there are plenty of good and bad examples.

Its a bit like flashbacks or inner monologues. These are ubiquitous narrative devices that are best judged on a case by case basis.

So, I was wondering: was there any movie franchise that ended on a high note? Like, I know a lot of movie companies tend to run the movie franchises to the ground and that sometimes, that can cause a movie franchise to end on a bad note. But, were there any movie franchises that ended on a high note or ended where they needed to end?

Well if by "ended on a high note" you just mean that the last film was good and they didn't try to make pointless sequels until it becomes bad, Gremlins and Back to the Future come to mind.

So here’s an interesting tidbit: apparently on the set of Red One (new Amazon Christmas movie), Dwayne Johnson had been ballooning the budget by being late. Source is The Wrap:

We now know many things about the 2024 Cannes film festival, especially what films will be screened there, as well as the composition of the juries.

Greta Gerwig will preside the jury of the main competition, and Lily Gladstone is also a member. As well as Hirokazu Kore-eda, who is usually part of the competition as a director.

So apparently, there's a problem with Rotten Tomatoes rating system on Google. Apparently, when you search for a movie on Google, instead of seeing the critics' score, you see the audience score. Rotten Tomatoes are saying they are going to fix this, but what are your thoughts on audience scores being shown instead of critics' scores?

Started my watch of the full Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy in preparation for Kingdom.

Does anyone know what happened to the Planet of the Apes thread, btw?

At Cinema Con 2024, Paramount announced a live-action, big-screen crossover of Transformers and G.I. Joe. I'm guessing the title is going to be Transformers X G.I. Joe or G.I. Joe X Transformers. Notice the "X" in the title. It's going to be like Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, in which the two will come together and work with each other rather than against each other.

I already saw Rise of The Beasts on the big screen this past July, and liked on how it, like its predecessor film, had a character-driven story peppered with action sequences, and swapping out the immature humor and excess of the original 5-film continuity. It's proof that getting rid of Michael Bay from the director's chair and rebooting was the best thing to ever happen to the Transformers film series.

Oh, BTW, I also saw Gx K: The New Empire. The VFX were top-notch!

And yes, Mirage was the most fun new Autobot in ROTB. Can't wait to see him in the crossover!

Thoughts? smile

I don't see why a Google search couldn't show both. Different people find either the critic score or the audience score more useful, (Sometimes different from movie to movie, even.) that's why Rotten Tomatoes has two to begin with.

I wonder about that too. Why won't Rotten Tomatoes show both the audience score and the critics score on the search engine? Like no matter what, if Rotten Tomatoes want to show off their scores, then what's the harm in showing both the audience score and the critics score in the search engines?
