It just flooded a uranium mine.

This shit just keeps getting worse...

Isn't uranium relatively safe when it's in a mine? It need processing still. About as risky as flooding a coal mine no?

It is relatively safe even when processed. (Also uranium is everywhere in nature, uranum mines just have a bit more of the stuff than average).

A weird and sad tale. A mom whose son died got bereavement payments from the Russian military. Apparently, she's sending her kids to death in Ukraine just to buy a new place and repair the family house in the countryside.

[up][up][up]

You don't want that in your water any more than you want to be drinking coal.

The hundreds or even thousands of mine wells drilled into the deposit have compromised the natural protective barrier surrounding the uranium ore, Alexei Shvarts, the former head of Alexei Navalny's Kurgan regional office who previously worked with uranium mining issues, told Agentsvo.

As a result, the latest flooding has likely sent radioactive substances into the river, environmentalists said, potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of people living near the banks of the Tobol downstream.

Local ecologists said that the mines have been accumulating "radioactive sludge" for years, while authorities have ignored numerous public protests against continued uranium mining in this area, which is prone to spring flooding from the Tobol River.

And of course the authorities tried to ignore the problem.

Rosatom has previously dismissed protests against uranium mining at Dobrovolskoye as "radiophobia combined with ignorance," claiming that the deposit is fully isolated from the Tobol River by natural barriers and ruling out potential leaks and river contamination.

Well, there's a lot of people walking in those parades, and they don't get to tie their shoelaces once they notice it's coming loose. So pretty often, I'd say.

Putin replaces Russia’s defense minister with a civilian, citing rising military spending and need for innovation

Summary:

1. Sergey Shoigu to be replaced by one Andrey Belusov as Russia's Minister of Defense. Shoigu will now be the Secretary of the Russian Security Council.

2. Belosov was previously First Deputy Prime Minister, which allowed him to be Prime Minister temporarily in 2020 while Mikhail Mishustin battled COVID. He was selected, according to Dmitry Peskov, because Putin saw the need for "innovation", adding his respective tenures as Minister of Economic Development and the Presidential Economic Assistant as credentials to be Minister of Defense.

Shoigu will be replacing Patrushev as the head of the Security Council, while the latter is being transferred to an as-of-yet unannounced posting.

Update: Meduza: Putin appoints Patrushev as a presidential aide. Guess now they'll have more time to talk about the Yellowstone Caldera ending Western civilisation or whatever.
