Could be YMMV, but the ruling on the Emergencies Act also gave a dent to him too.

Well as least to the ex-CSIS analysts I've heard from.

Canada's announced that new visa restrictions will be implemented for Mexican visitors under certain conditions. This is due to Mexicans coming to Canada (a lot) to get asylum.

The Quebec Court of Appeal upheld the province's secularism law, which is already controversial in itself.

Fifth Estate has a vid on what happened to Nijjar and it highlights some of the misinformation used to discredit Sikhs living in BC.

Nenshi’s running for thr Alberta NDP: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/calgary-mayor-naheed-nenshi-1.7140075

He’s not really a New Democrat, but he is a prominent figure who’s done a lot of good work.

Not sure if it was him when Calgary wanted to use a COMPASS-based public transit card.

I wonder if the NDP thinks Nenshi would make more people in Calgary vote for them. Because Nenshi's appeal is very love him or hate him (usually depending on city quadrant), and I suspect the people who voted for him in Calgary vote NDP anyways.

His protégé and successor Jyoti Gondek is generally seen as a complete failure of a Mayor, but to be fair Nenshi is a much stronger public speaker than her so her failures likely won't impact his future success.

Far-right sources are claiming that the judicial system said they can issue life sentences for "speech crimes". Can anyone give context for that?

It is a proposal, but only for someone who repeatedly and consistently advocates genocide towards actual groups of people and refuses to stop after every single other avenue has been exhausted, and it would be a house arrest with limited internet access.

Everything else, it’s taking the penalties that exist for IRL hate speech and applying it to online hate speech.

Not Three Laws compliant.

Here’s a CBC article, though I’d like more concrete information than it gives: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/online-harms-bill-margaret-atwood-1.7141165

Here is the text of the bill itself: https://www.parl.ca/DocumentViewer/en/44-1/bill/C-63/first-reading

The provision they are referring to is this: 318 (1) Every person who advocates or promotes genocide is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for life.
