Oh yeah definitely, it would be supremely counter productive (though I feel, well the Conservatives would object even more strenuously, especially the Albertans we could definitely do more to combat climate change than just the carbon tax). We are facing the "You can't eat money" thing very directly.

They could do that yeah.

Today was the closing argument in the trial of Nathaniel Veltman a Canadian man who, in 2021, ran with his vehicle over a Muslim family that was taking a walk in Ontario, killing four members of it.

Salman Afzaal, 46, and his wife, Madiha Salman, 44, their daughter, Yumna Afzaal, 15, and Mr Afzaal's mother, Talat Afzaal, 74, died in the attack.

A nine-year-old boy was seriously hurt, but survived.

He was charged with four first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder, plus terrorism charges.

The prosecution says that Veltman was radicalized because of white supremacist material he viewed on the Dark Web and that he wanted to send a "message "and make "all Muslims fearful for their safety"

His lawyer argued that his client was having "mental troubles" and that he should be prosecuted for manslaughter and not for first degree murder or terrorrism.

If found guilty, he will face a lifetime in prison.

The case marks the first time a jury in Canada has heard legal arguments on terrorism related to white supremacy.

What are the criteria for "mental health problems" in Canada?

I am not Canadian, but if we are talking about criminal cases, then to mount a successful insanity defense, you have to prove that you are either:

1-Suffering from a mental disorder

2-Unable to appreciate the "nature and quality" of the act

3-Did not know the act was "wrong."

.................

1. A mental disorder, or "disease of the mind," is:

Any illness, disorder or abnormal condition that impairs the human mind and its functioning, excluding, however, self-induced states caused by alcohol or drugs, as well as transitory mental states such as hysteria or concussion.

Examples:

Retardation

Sleepwalking

Delirium Tremens

Toxic Psychosis

.....................

2- Unable to appreciate the "nature and quality" of the act

The defendant is unable to appreciate the "physical character" and "physical consequences" of his actions.

..................

3- The defendant is deprived of the capacity for rational perception and, hence, rational choice about the rightness or wrongness of his acts

...................

Section 16 of the criminal code

16 (1) No person is criminally responsible for an act committed or an omission made while suffering from a mental disorder that rendered the person incapable of appreciating the nature and quality of the act or omission or of knowing that it was wrong.

Marginal note:Presumption

(2) Every person is presumed not to suffer from a mental disorder so as to be exempt from criminal responsibility by virtue of subsection (1), until the contrary is proved on the balance of probabilities.

Marginal note:Burden of proof

(3) The burden of proof that an accused was suffering from a mental disorder so as to be exempt from criminal responsibility is on the party that raises the issue.

[up][up]Bad, reckless driving is still a serious issue in all countries, especially around the holidays. It can happen at any time. To anyone and everyone, genuinely stay safe out there.

Sam Cooper (investigative journalist) reported that Senator Yuen Pau Woo promised to help the United Front by shielding them from criticism from what's happening in Xinjiang.

Not surprised to me. He's been trying to prevent a foreign agent registry law from being enacted since he fears racism can come out of it. He's also pro-CCP rule of law during the pro-democrat protests in HK.

It's starting up the debate between pro-monarch and pro-republic.

[up]That’s been a long debate in Canada since at least this decade. I still remember how in a high school class when we first learned Queen Elizabeth II passed on, there was a real talk about whether Canada should just split from the monarchy entirely.

The many controversies they’ve had over the years (especially now with the Epstein list) don’t help matters.

Federal judge threw a wrench on the legality of using the Emergencies Act to stop the Freedom Convoy since it violated the Charter

He cited the “potential for serious violence, or being unable to say that there was no potential for serious violence was, of course, a valid reason for concern, But in my view, it did not satisfy the test required to invoke the Act, particularly as there was no evidence of a similar 'hardened cell' elsewhere in the country, only speculation, and the situation at Coutts had been resolved without violence."

As a day-to-day politician, he is a competent and stable leader. But between his constant trips abroad, the Black Face scandal, accidentally inviting a Nazi to be rewarded in congress, and doing little to combat the growing economic struggles and bigotry following Canada’s convoy protests, most Canadians I know think Trudeau won’t be re-elected.

"Fuck Trudeau" stickers are popular all throughout the country.

Just last week This Hour Has 22 Minutes said that 62% of Liberal voters vote Liberal not because they believe in the party, but because they don't want the Conservatives in charge.

I'm probably among them. I think Trudeau's term should come to an end, but I sure as hell won't be voting Conservative given today's politics and the Terror Convoy. I'll likely be voting NDP this coming major election.

Mmm. Trudeau started out popular, but his appeal has been worn down but a bunch of missteps and scandals over the years, so at this point it's more about keeping the MAGA-cosplayers out of power than actually liking Trudeau.
