In the middle of the night, Imogen awakes from a nightmare that raises concerns for Bertrand's safety. She and Laudna rejoin Faerne, Orym and Dorian at the Spire by Fire inn. Upon finding Bertrand's room empty, the five venture into the streets in search of him and eventually find his body, a peaceful smile on its face. Orym notices that Bertrand's wounds match his own and realizes the pale dwarf must be responsible. They take Bertrand's body to Lord Eshteross, who recommends they stick together and offers them safe lodging at his manor. Imogen tells the others about her recurring dream, where she hears the voice of her mother, and how this is the first time it's different.

The next day, the five rejoin Ashton and F.C.G. and decide to return to the Weary Way Inn. In the room where they fought the dwarf, the group investigate a small hole the shade creepers used for passage and discover it leads to a vast cavern beneath the city. They also gather some information about the pale dwarf: he goes by the name of Duggar and used to be a normal-looking carpenter. He stopped working a few years ago but still managed to get by somehow, possibly by associating with a group called the Hubatt Corsairs. However, over the past six months his fortunes and appearance seem to have changed for the worse.

Our heroes return to Lord Eshteross with their findings. Eshteross tells them that the Hubatt Corsairs are a clandestine group of people that steal from the rich and powerful and give to the poor. He is interested in cooperating with them if the chance presents itself, and offers a few possible leads to their whereabouts. In private, Orym asks the lord about Oshad "The Anger" Breshio, the man he has been sent to Jrusar to find. Oshad is a bodyguard to a noble family, which was attacked in a manner similar to another incident in Orym's home of Zephrah. Orym wishes to learn if there is a connection between the two events. Eshteross informs him that Oshad is still recovering from his wounds, and that he will try to arrange a meeting. Before leaving, everyone pays their last respects to Bertrand, who will be sent to Whitestone for burial.

Everyone heads to Elder's Post, an underground marketplace, where Ashton asks an informant to get him in contact with the Corsairs. He is given a password and directed to the Root Trader, a small herb shop. Led into a secret chamber, the group is confronted by about 30 armed people, whose intentions seem less than friendly...
