All heroic characters chosen to wield a Miraculous.
  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: The Animal Alias type. Their hero names and transformed outfits are each based on a specific animal, while their abilities usually have more to do with the symbolic meaning of the animal rather than the animal's actual abilities (i.e Ladybug's ability, Lucky Charm, is connected to ladybugs being symbols of good luck).
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: Each of them has a special transformation phrase they use to turn into a superhero. While the original French version gives them a generic "[Kwami], transform me!", the English dub gives them unique lines.
    • For Ladybug, Mister Bug and Scarabella — "Tikki, spots on!"
    • For Cat Noir, Lady Noir, Cat Walker and Kitty Noir — "Plagg, claws out!"
    • For Rena Rouge — "Trixx, let's pounce!"
    • For Carapace — "Wayzz, shell on!"
    • For Queen Bee and Vesperia — "Pollen, buzz on!"
    • For Viperion and Aspik — "Sass, scales slither!"
    • For Pegasus — "Kaalki, full gallop!"
    • For Ryuko — "Longg, bring the storm!"
    • For Bunnyx — "Fluff, clockwise!"
    • For King Monkey — "Xuppu, showtime!"
    • For Polymouse and Multimouse — "Mullo, get squeaky!"
    • For Pigella — "Daizzi, rejoice!"
    • For Purple Tigress — "Roaar, stripes on!"
    • For Miss Hound, Flairmidable and Canigirl — "Barkk, on the hunt!"
    • For Caprikid — "Ziggy, bleat it!"
    • For Minotaurox — "Stompp, make way!"
    • For Rooster Bold — "Orikko, sunrise!"
    • For Argos — "Duusu, spread my feathers!"
  • Calling Your Attacks: Actually necessary- if the Miraculous user is unable to speak their power's name for whatever reason, it's unusable, as seen in Silencer and Truth.
    • For Ladybug et al — "Lucky Charm!"
    • For Cat Noir et al — "Cataclysm!"
    • For Rena Rouge — "Mirage!"
    • For Carapace — "Shellter!"
    • For Queen Bee and Vesperia — "Venom!"
    • For Viperion and Aspik — "Second Chance!"
    • For Pegasus — "Voyage!"
    • For Ryuko (who has three):
      • "Wind Dragon!"
      • "Water Dragon!"
      • "Lightning Dragon!"
    • For Bunnyx — "Burrow!"
    • For King Monkey — "Uproar!"
    • For Polymouse and Multimouse — "Multitude!"
    • For Pigella — "Gift!"
    • For Purple Tigress — "Clout!"
    • For Miss Hound et al — "Fetch!"
    • For Caprikid — "Genesis!"
    • For Minotaurox — "Resistance!"
    • For Rooster Bold — "Sublimation!"
  • Dead Alternate Counterpart: In "Cat Blanc", their Bad Future version (including Hawk Moth) become victims of Cat Blanc's Mega Cataclysm. Thanks to Bunnyx's help, Ladybug was able to fix the timeline, which prevents those events, including Cat Noir's akumatization, from ever happening.
  • Fantastic Recruitment Drive: The Order of Guardians used to do this...before they got eaten.
  • Glamour: "Miraculous New York" confirms that the Miraculous holders are covered by a "quantum masking" field that prevents people from recognizing them in costume. However, it's not invincible; Alya already recognized Nino's distinctive turns of phrase in "Anansi" and suspected him of being Carapace, and it has no effect on highly advanced A.I.s like Uncanny Valley.
  • Instant Expert: Part of the magic of the Miraculous is that wielders instinctively understand the heightened grace it gives them. New heroine Rena Rouge is surprised when Ladybug jumps onto a rooftop and calls Rena to follow her - and even more surprised when she finds she can. (However, it takes a while before any wielder gets used to their weapon.)
  • Logical Weakness:
    • Each of the heroes have to use a verbal command to utilize their superpowers. Naturally, if their voice were somehow removed or impaired, they wouldn't be able to summon their powers. Furthermore, if they didn't have their voices pre-transformation, they wouldn't be able to transform at all.
    • If the Miraculous is physically removed, the transformation ends immediately.
  • Meaningful Name: Each of the heroes choose a name that relates to the animal of their Miraculous. Some more on the nose than others.
    • Ladybug - Ladybug shares her name with ladybugs, a species of red spotted beetles.
    • Lady Noir - A play on Cat Noir's name when Marinette wields the Cat Miraculous.
    • Cat Noir - Cat Noir's name in the French dub (Chat Noir) means "black cat" in French.
    • Mister Bug - A play on Ladybug's name when Adrien wields the Ladybug Miraculous.
    • Rena Rouge - Means "red fox" in French.
    • Rena Furtive - "Invisible Fox" in French, referencing Alya's shift to covert operations.
    • Carapace - A carapace is the upper hard shell of a turtle or tortoise.
    • Queen Bee - The queen bee is the leader of a beehive.
    • Bunnyx - A cross between "bunny" and her civilian name.
    • Viperion - A cross of the words "viper" and "hyperion".
    • Pegasus - The famous flying horse in Greek mythology.
    • King Monkey - Straightforward enough, and also a reference to the Monkey King.
    • Ryuko - Japanese for "dragon child".
    • Multimouse - "Mouse", obviously, and "multi" refers to the Miraculous' Self-Duplication powers and the fact that Marinette and her clones use multiple Miraculous.
    • Polymouse - As above, "Poly" meaning multiple and "mouse" for her animal.
    • Pigella - "Pig" is pretty on the nose, but "ella" is also a name meaning "light" or "elegant".
    • Vesperia - Vesperia comes from the words "vespa", which means "wasp" in Italian.
    • Purple Tigress - "Purple" due to her violet color scheme and "Tigress" as a female tiger.
    • Miss Hound - "Hound" is a name used for tracking dogs.
    • Rooster Bold - "Rooster" for obvious reasons and "Bold" referencing his newfound confidence as a superhero. It's also a pun on Booster Gold.
    • Caprikid - A cross between Capricorn, the symbol of the goat in the Western zodiac, and "kid", based on his youth and/or the fact that young goats are called kids.
    • Minotaurox - A cross between "minotaur", the half-man/half-bull monster of Greek myth, and "ox", natch.
    • Argos - Comes from Argos Panoptes, the hundred-eyed servant of Hera in Greek mythology who guarded the woman-turned-cow Io and was slain by Hermes on Zeus' orders (long story). According to Roman poet Ovid, Hera commemorated Argos by preserving his many eyes in the peacock's tail.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Word of God says that Miraculous holders are essentially invulnerable. They certainly can resist attacks that would severely injure or even kill a normal human. However, there are a few caveats to their invulnerability. Any injuries sustained before transformation will persist afterwards. Holders still require air to breathe. In addition, Miraculous holders can be pushed to the point of exhaustion. Some of these vulnerabilities are circumvented by the Miraculous potions. They appear to revolve around allowing their users to endure much harsher environmental conditions; underwater, freezing temperatures, the vacuum of space…
  • Psychoactive Powers: The New York special reveals that, if put under extreme emotional stress, the Cat's powers can go haywire. Presumably this is true for the other Miraculouses.
  • Supernatural Team: The one thing they all have in common is that their powers come from their Miraculouses. This is in-contrast to their American neighbors the United Heroez, whose powers and themes are varied and explicitly non-magical.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: "Queen Wasp" shows that not even Miraculous holders are immune to Akumatization. If Hawk Moth akumatizes them when they have their Miraculouses active, they will be granted a powered-up version of their main power they can use at will without dropping their transformation, which is demonstrated by Queen Wasp's wasp swarm that can paralyze multiple targets and Cat Blanc's infinite power of destruction.
  • Super-Reflexes: Miraculous wielders get superhuman reflexes and agility from their superhero transformations. During any fight, they keep moving all the time and are extremely hard to hit.
  • Super-Strength: Miraculous wielders get a notorious strength and stamina boost when transformed. They aren't slowed down when they carry people while running and jumping, and often lift and throw extremely heavy stuff with relative ease. In "Kwamibuster", for example, Ladybug catches a large safe box, that has a man inside, mid-fall.
  • Transformation Trinket: Each hero has a special accessory which they use to transform.
    • Ladybug/Mister Bug — Earrings.
    • Cat Noir/Lady Noir — Ring.
    • Rena Rouge — Necklace.
    • Carapace — Bracelet.
    • Queen Bee/Vesperia — Hair comb.
    • Viperion/Aspik — Ouroboros bracelet.
    • Ryuko — Choker necklace.
    • Bunnyx — Pocket watch.
    • Pegasus — Glasses.
    • King Monkey — Circlet.
    • Polymouse/Multimouse — Pendant necklace.
    • Pigella — Pearl anklet.
    • Purple Tigress — Panjas bracelet.
    • Miss Hound/Flairmidable/Canigirl — Collar Necklace
    • Rooster Bold — Thumb Ring
    • Caprikid — Hair Clips
    • Minotaurox — Nose Ring
    • Argos — Brooch

Paris's champions

Cat Noir: Like you said, we can't lose hope. People are relying on us.
Ladybug: But our team crumbled.
Cat Noir: Then let's go back to what's always worked. A duo. You and me against the world, milady.

The two heroes who protect Paris from danger.

  • All-Loving Hero: Downplayed. Both Marinette and Adrien are genuinely kind-hearted individuals who care about protecting their friends, families, and Paris. However, they are still flawed individuals who show a normal amount of anger, pettiness, or immaturity in some of their actions.
  • Anchored Ship: While they do have crushes on each other, they'll never be able to get together until 1. their identity issues are resolved and 2. Hawk Moth is removed from the equation.
  • Animal Motifs: Played for Laughs and downplayed. During their separate Imagine Spots, they both want to adopt a hamster.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: They are the most experienced Miraculous wielders and have saved all of their future teammates from Hawk Moth at some point, so even permanent wielders like Bunnyx usually follow their lead.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Ladybug and Cat Noir almost always fight together, side-by-side against whatever evil force is present.
  • Badass Adorable: Both are pretty dorky and cute teens who are the beloved superheroes of their home.
  • Badass Minds Think Alike: Barring unusual fear or self-doubt, they coordinate perfectly with only minimal communication- if any at all. Of course, they are heavily implied to be soulmates.
  • Battle Couple: Zigzagged. They are not a couple, but have romantic feelings for one another and protect Paris from Hawk Moth. However, the duo are in love with the other's different identity — Marinette aka Ladybug is in love with Adrien, while Cat Noir aka Adrien is in love with Ladybug.
  • Betty and Veronica: As with many other Love Triangle variants, the Love Square features several different variants on this trope, depending on how you choose to divvy up the characters:
    • If you treat Adrien as the "Archie", you get a straight(-ish) example. Marinette is the "Betty": friendly, girly, wears sensible clothes, and part of Adrien's civilian life. Ladybug is the "Veronica": Reserved, an Action Girl of the highest order, wears a skintight bodysuit and belongs to Cat Noir's superhero life. Cat definitely favors Ladybug.
    • If you treat Marinette as the "Archie", you get a somewhat more complicated version of the trope. Adrien has some "Betty" traits (Marinette loves him for his kindness, he wears sensible clothes, and he's part of her civilian life), and some "Veronica" traits (a literal model and very reserved and aloof in his interactions with her). Cat Noir, contrariwise, is part of Ladybug's superhero life and wears a leather catsuit ("Veronica"), but is friendly and devoted to Ladybug ("Betty").
    • As of season two, both Marinette and Adrien are in a proper version of this trope: Marinette is the sweetheart "Betty" to Kagami's ice queen "Veronica" for Adrien's "Archie", while Adrien is the popular and reserved "Veronica" to Luka's calm and patient "Betty" for Marinette's "Archie".
  • Birds of a Feather:
    • Despite being Foils of each other and a downplayed version of Opposites Attract, they have a lot in common - Both of them are only children with a Friendless Background, enjoy and great at video games, are insecure individuals and being miraculous holders gives them each a much needed confidence boost (as well as other obvious additions), fans of Jagged Stone (with a shared dislike of XY), are flawed but usually nice individuals with a jealous, possessive streak for one another. They each have some connection to fashion (Marinette is a budding fashion designer, Adrien is a fashion model for his father's fashion line). Both also are pretty popular with the opposite sex as well, and have a knack for leadership (this one is more emphasized with Marinette/Ladybug).
    • Adrien also has this with both his alternative love interest, Kagami, since both have similar backgrounds with strict controlling parents and very few friends, and with his childhood friend, Chloé, for the problems with an absent/missed mom.
    • Occurs with Marinette and Luka, who is as sensible and creative as her, and both have some sort of artistic interest (fashion and design to Marinette, music to Luka).
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Marinette is the Brunette/Bluenette to Adrien's and Chloé's Blond and Alya's Redhead.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Zigzagged. Both are encouraging towards one another when the other is feeling forlorn, but usually Marinette is a sweet and compassionate person (Gentle Girl) and Adrien has a boatload of parental issues with his time as Cat Noir being a way to actually be himself (Brooding Boy). However, due to the duo's complicated relationship, which has them being close but at the same time not being close to one another, leads to neither one having open and proper conversations.
  • Brought Down to Badass: They've occasionally been forced to face Hawk Moth's minions without their Miraculous, but they always prove to be resourceful enough to get by without them.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Inverted and downplayed. Marinette and Adrien only show their perverted side towards one another, but it's very subtle.
  • The Cape: Downplayed. Adrien and Marinette are kind, helpful, and morally upright people — the reason both of them became The Chosen One. After they've gained their miraculouses, both try to be good, but neither is perfect and they make mistakes.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: Ladybug and Cat Noir are fond of snarking at the Villain of the Week, and the latter even throws some puns at them.
  • Celeb Crush: Subverted twice. Marinette/Ladybug has a crush on the teen model and idol of Paris Adrien Agreste and Adrien/Cat Noir has a crush on teen superhero and idol of Paris Ladybug. However, neither of their crushes are due to the fame of the other, but rather due to other non-physical attributes such as kindness and goodness (Marinette to Adrien) or confidence and competence in the face of danger (Cat Noir to Ladybug). Lots of others around them probably see it as a standard Celeb Crush though.
  • Character Shilling: Both have this in different tones.
    • Marinette, even if somewhat prone to panicking and bumbling, is very loved by her family and friends and they're always praising her good qualities. As Ladybug, it's unnecessary to say that almost the whole city idolizes her.
    • Adrien is his dad's prized model and the face of many products and marketing in Paris. Ask his tons and tons of devoted fans. Somewhat downplayed as Cat Noir, since while he's still appreciated as one of Paris' heroes, many people easily treat him somewhat as Ladybug's office boy/assistant.
  • Chevalier vs. Rogue: Ladybug's insistence on doing things the 'rogue' way- manipulating enemies, fighting with traps, keeping a lot of secrets- causes friction with her more straightforward teammate Cat Noir.
  • The Chosen One: After putting the two through a Secret Test of Character at different times, Master Fu decided that they were the right holders of the Ladybug (Marinette) and Cat (Adrien) miraculouses.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Both have shown to have cutting sarcasm from time to time
  • Dogged Nice Guy: And Girl, but both are Zigzagged. For Marinette, she is smitten with Adrien but he only sees her as a good friend. On the other hand, Cat Noir (Adrien) is in love with Ladybug (Marinette), but she assumes his flirting isn't serious and while occasionally annoyed by his antics, she does care for him. In other words, their feelings for one another are returned...kind of.
  • Entitled to Have You: Downplayed. Neither go to any extreme lengths like murder to keep the other all to themselves, but they have done some morally questionable things out of jealousy.
    • Marinette — While she is apparently willing to let Adrien date other people the reason she falls into this trope is her overactive imagination making her think that Kagami would take Adrien to Japan (i. e. away from her), and thus spends the entire episode helping Chloé humiliate Kagami.
    • Adrien — As Cat Noir, he respects Ladybug's wishes to keep their identities a secret from each other and doesn't do anything forceful; he's also a downplayed Crazy Jealous Guy plus Marinette (who is also a downplayed Clingy Jealous Girl) has done some wrong actions out of jealousy just like Adrien.
      • Adrien lies about their relationship status in "Copycat" resulting in the titular villain.
      • Second, in "Glaciator", he sets up a romantic date with Ladybug to confess his feelings, despite her and Plagg noting that she said she had other plans. And obviously, she doesn't show up. When the titular Akuma shows, Cat Noir begins to act bitter and uncooperative with her, at one point accusing her indirectly of playing with his feelings. In the end, he apologizes for overreacting and accepts her feelings for another boy.
      • However, in "Frozer", he tries again to woo Ladybug despite knowing about her feelings for someone else and when they show up to deal with the akuma he acts coldly toward her.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Chronologically, the protagonists' responses to receiving the Call to Adventure say a lot about the heroes they eventually become. Marinette is cautious and self-effacing- she asks a lot of questions about Tikki, and later insists that she's too cowardly to be a good Miraculous-bearer. Adrien doesn't even let Plagg finish explaining before he accepts the call, clearly relishing the chance to break free of his overbearing father.
  • Experienced Protagonist: By the start of the series, both Ladybug and Cat Noir are competent heroes who know how to use their powers to defeat their enemies.
  • Fate Drives Us Together: It is an ongoing meta-joke of the series that Marinette and Adrien somehow always end up finding each other- usually just in time to comfort the other or spark some much-needed character development. (Fate is terribly efficient in this setting.) Fu attributes it to their being soulmates.
  • The Fettered: Depending on character interpretation either played straight or downplayed. As Ladybug and Cat Noir, they stand for responsibility and justice, and protect Paris against Hawk Moth and his Villain of the Week.
  • Foil: Despite the two being Birds of a Feather, they have a number of differences that serve to contrast them.
    • Personality — Marinette has a bold, expressive personality as either a civilian or superhero while Adrien often has trouble verbalizing his feelings unless he's Cat Noir.
    • Families — Marinette is from a loving middle-class family while Adrien is from a wealthy broken one.
    • Reaction to getting their Miraculous — Neurotic, insecure Marinette refuses the call, while sheltered, lonely Adrien jumps at it.
    • Relationship with Chloé — Marinette has an antagonistic relationship with Chloé especially since the latter bullied her four years prior. On the other hand, Chloé was Adrien's Only Friend. Their relationship with Chloé also highlights the difference the two had in meeting their future best friend — for Marinette, Alya stood up to Chloé's bullying of Marinette, which became the primary reason for Marinette befriending her; Nino was initially skeptical on if Adrien was a good person due to his ties with someone as bratty and mean as Chloé.
    • Interest in fashion — Marinette is a budding fashion designer while Adrien has been a model for his father's fashion line. But while Marinette genuinely enjoys it, Adrien doesn't particularly like modeling and only does it to make his father happy.
    • Crushes on each other — Both are deeply in love with one another (bordering on stalkerish levels), and fell in love with one another for non-physical reasons, but they both can behave quite unhealthily possessive of one another. Marinette is in love with Adrien and acts quite shy and insecure around him, and whenever she suspects a girl may like him, she abuses her powers to stop said girl from getting close to him, but "Riposte" shows she's growing out of this; Adrien is in love with Ladybug and is flirty with her as Cat Noir but is shy when in his civilian form and his way of stopping another guy from pursuing her is to outright lie about their relationship status.
    • Designs — They are a Hair-Contrast Duo who sport a downplayed Red/Green Contrast in their superpowered forms, and subtle inverted color schemes in their civilian outfits.
    • Fame — Marinette is Paris' greatest hero in her superhero persona and a regular person in civilian life, while Adrien is famous in civilian life and hangs in the background as a hero.
  • Good Luck Charm: In "The Gamer", Marinette gave Adrien a personal good luck charm she uses while playing video games. Later on in "La Befana", it's revealed that he always keeps it with him; and for Marinette's birthday, Adrien gives her a good luck charm he made.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Downplayed and deconstructed. The protagonists are quite possessive of each other despite not actually being in a relationship. For the former, they don't go to crazy lengths to keep their crushes to themselves, but for the latter, the way they handle someone else being enamored with their love interest (Cat Noir - smug and deliberate lying, Ladybug — harsh, inappropriate call-out) led to someone being akumatized and a lesson being learned in the end about not doing something like lying or yelling at the "rival" simply to keep them away from your love interest.
  • Guile Hero: More than anything, the use of Lucky Charm and Cataclysm necessitates quick thinking and creative improvising. This is because while Lucky Charm creates an item that can always be used to solve whatever problem you're faced with (not to mention be used as a catalyst for a World-Healing Wave) and Cataclysm can destroy anything, each can only be used once per transformation and their use starts a countdown timer until the current transformation ends. So you pretty much have to think quickly and improvise creatively to get the most out of them.
  • Hair-Contrast Duo: Marinette is the brunette and Adrien is the blond.
  • Handshake Substitute: Ladybug and Cat Noir often do a fist bump to celebrate having vanquished the Villain of the Week.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Marinette is in love with Adrien, but he only sees her as a good friend. However, Cat Noir aka Adrien has a crush on Ladybug aka Marinette but she doesn't care for his flirting.
  • Karmic Jackpot: Like their mentor, they're constantly, quietly assessing the people around them for heroic potential. If you are worthy of a Miraculous, they will know and they will get in touch with you.
  • Kid Hero: Technically teen heroes, but both are around 13-15 and are a crime fighting duo.
  • Legacy Character: They're the latest in a long line of people who took the mantle of Ladybug and Cat Noir. Previous Ladybugs include Joan of Arc and Hippolyta.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Even before character development, Ladybug and Cat Noir were bluntly honest to each other in a way only completely trusting partners can be.
Marinette: [It] feels like we've known each other forever!
  • Loves My Alter Ego: Inverted for both.
    • Marinette is head over heels in love with Adrien, becoming a flustered mess whenever he’s around. And while she does find Cat Noir's flirting annoying, she still cares about him.
    • The opposite for Adrien — He considers Marinette a good friend, but is oblivious to her romantic feelings for him. Ladybug is the only girl to hold his heart.
    • Seems to be gradually shifting in season 2; Ladybug has pretty blatantly flirted back with Cat Noir on occasion, and Adrien has demonstrated that he's attracted to Marinette as well as Ladybug. And they still have no clue that this love square involves only two people.
  • Made of Indestructium: The duo's main weapons.
    • Ladybug's yo-yo string is unbreakable. Among other things, she's used it to stop cars. The only exception is when Simon Says used a power nullifier to negate its magic properties, changing it into a useless normal yo-yo.
    • Like Ladybug's yo-yo, nothing can break Cat Noir's staff. In "Mayura", he can even wield it while he's got Cataclysm activated (although it may be specifically immune to Cataclysm, like how Hawk Moth can't akumatize himself). Weredad, however, was able to break it into pieces by punching it.
  • Magical Girl Warrior: Marinette and Adrien use their powers to fight crime. The latter is quite a rare male example, in addition to being a Cat Boy.
  • Mana Meter:
    • Ladybug and Cat Noir have indicators on their Miraculouses (Spots and a cat's paw, respectively), that show how much time they have left before they change back into their civilian forms. Using Lucky Charm and Cataclysm greatly wears their Kwamis out, so it better count.
    • Hawk Moth implies in "Mayura" that, with more practice, they can hold their transformations after using their abilities.
  • The Masquerade Will Kill Your Dating Life: Season 3 ends with them dating Luka and Kagami. By the second episode of Season 4, both relationships have imploded due primarily (Marinette/Luka) or partially (Adrien/Kagami) to the stress of their double lives.
  • Master of the Mixed Message: The two of them have horrible trouble communicating their feelings; Marinette is constantly done in by her clumsiness and tendency to panic at the mere sight of Adrien, while Adrien tends to be overly affectionate towards her even when he sees her as just a friend.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: In "Syren", Master Fu cooks up some potions for Tikki and Plagg to drink that beef up their powers. For example, the introductory potion gives them fins and allows them to fight underwater, while the potion used in "Frozer" gives them ice skates and added insulation against the cold.
  • Not So Above It All: While both are genuinely sweet, heroic individuals, both have had a Moment of Weakness that made them petty and immature.
  • Oblivious to Love: The duo are only concerned with each other...sorta. Besides that complicated situation, neither one takes into account other admirers that are romantically interested in them.
  • One-Man Army: Or "One Woman Army". Either way, both heroes can take on either four akumatized villains and a controlled Cat Noir (Ladybug) or an entire force of Brainwashed and Crazy people (Cat Noir).
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Both Marinette and Adrien smile during their transformations into Ladybug and Cat Noir, respectively. So, when either one is not smiling during the transformation it means they are genuinely distressed and/or saddened about something.
  • Opposites Attract: Downplayed. In a literal sense — Ladybug: A symbol for good luck. Cat Noir: A symbol for bad luck. But, other than that, they have a lot of similarities with each other.
  • Red/Green Contrast: Ladybug and Cat Noir are both partnered heroes that share this color scheme. Ladybug's outfit is predominantly red, tempered with black spots. In-contrast, Cat Noir's design is predominantly black, tempered with various accents of green (mainly his green eyes and the paw-print symbol on his ring when active).
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Zigzagged. In their civilian life, Marinette is more energetic and emotional while Adrien is quiet and reserved. However, in their superhero life, Ladybug is more controlled and perceptive (at times) while Cat Noir is more Hot-Blooded and full of energy.
  • Romantic Rain: Marinette's epic crush on Adrien is born when he lends her an umbrella in the rain.
  • Rude Hero, Nice Sidekick: They have that dynamic sometimes, mostly in season one. Ladybug can come out as excessively strict to the point of sounding like a jerk, while Cat Noir, being more laidback, can act more considerate and even more level headed than her. In Antibug, Ladybug's dislike of Chloé caused her to ignore good advice, which Cat Noir points out. In season 3's Gamer 2.0, the overly stressed Ladybug isn't at her best, while Cat Noir and Gamer are enjoying the game.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Zigzagged. It all depends on which identity they are at the moment — Marinette and Cat Noir are a bundle of energy, but become more serious as Ladybug or Adrien, respectively.
  • Second Super-Identity:
    • In "Reflekdoll", when temporarily removing their Miraculous, being transformed into Reflekta copies makes Tikki and Plagg trying to find their owners difficult. This results in a Miraculous swap where Marinette becomes Lady Noir and Adrien becomes Mister Bug. Played with as both Marinette and Adrien are aware that the other is Ladybug and Cat Noir.
    • In "Desperada", both Ladybug and Adrien let their feelings for each other get in the way of rational thought when Ladybug offers Adrien the Snake Miraculous and Adrien accepts, becoming Aspik in a failed attempt to woo Ladybug.
    • In "Kwamibuster", Marinette wears the Mouse Miraculous as Multimouse. In addition to the Mouse, Multimouse's clones wear and activate the Ladybug, Cat and Fox Miraculous as Multibug, Multinoir and Multifox.
    • In "Miracle Queen", Marinette wields both the Dragon and Ladybug Miraculous as Dragon Bug while Adrien wears both the Cat and Snake Miraculous as Snake Noir.
  • Secret Identity: They keep their identities a secret from each other, mostly at Ladybug's insistence. What makes it really infuriating is that they both go to the same school and are somewhat close in every guise - Marinette has a crush on Adrien, who considers her a friend, but he's in love with Ladybug, who's dismissive of Cat Noir's flirting, though still valuing him as a friend and partner. It's primarily the fuel for a Two-Person Love Square that really wants you to smack your head against the wall.
  • Selective Obliviousness: Both of them have gotten enough hints that it shouldn't be that hard to figure out the other's identity, yet neither even considers the truth.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: They're not even dating yet, but they somehow manage to frustrate all their classmates anyway.
  • Single-Target Sexuality:
    • In the first season, Marinette and Adrien only have eyes for Adrien aka Cat Noir and Ladybug aka Marinette, respectively. But both are currently unaware that they are crushing on the same person.
    • Zigzagged in season two, where Adrien and Marinette show some attraction to Kagami and Luka respectively. They get together at the end of season 3, but break up at the beginning of season 4 and go back to their initial targets.
  • Starcrossed Lovers: The two are in love with each other in a roundabout way, but cannot be together due to issues regarding their secret identities and Hawk Moth's presence holding them back.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: As superheroes, Ladybug is more serious and mature while Cat Noir makes silly jokes and is playfully cocky.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: They both envision a (2D cutout) future with their beloved that involves, among other things, a pet hamster.
  • Swapped Roles: The two are forced to switch their respective Miraculous pieces in "Reflekdoll", resulting in Mister Bug and Lady Noir fighting Reflekta and the titular sentimonster.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: As seen in Frozer, both Marinette and Adrien have a tendency to daydream of their love confessions being met with instant reciprocation which is followed immediately by a Happily Ever After. Adrien takes it a step further by his belief that Ladybug will one day love Cat Noir back, even when she clearly doesn't show interest.
  • Triple Shifter: They have to juggle superhero work, schoolwork and various family obligations. This often cuts into time with their friends and their sleeping habits.
  • Two-Person Love Triangle: It's actually a "Two Person Love Square". Marinette is in love with Adrien, who considers her an acquaintance. When she transforms into Ladybug, she rejects the romantic advances of Cat Noir. Of course, behind Cat Noir's mask hides none other than Adrien himself, who has no idea that his beloved Ladybug is actually Marinette in disguise! It gets better and even more complicated since Marinette and Cat Noir and Adrien and Ladybug have their own interactions.
  • Unequal Pairing: Adrien's shitty childhood means he'll always be a bit more emotionally dependent on Marinette than she is on him.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Some of the akuma they face beat both of them in raw power, and they make up for it by being Guile Heroes.

    Fei Wu/Ladydragon

Ladydragon (Fei Wu)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fei_wu_square.png
Click here to see her as Lady Dragon

Voiced by: Geneviève Doang (FR), Xanthe Huynh (EN)

A girl from Shanghai. After the passing of her adoptive father and master, Wu, she was entrusted with guarding a powerful secret beneath the city.

In the Miraculous World special "Shanghai - The Legend of Lady Dragon", she meets Marinette and she teams up with Ladybug and Cat Noir to protect the Dragon Cave from Hawk Moth, soon leading to her wielding the Prodigious.

  • Action Girl: She's so good at kung fu that she knocks Lian, Kang, and Jiao down by pulling her strikes so they just recoil from surprise and fall down rather than actually hitting them.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Marinette comes to see her as an older sister figure and attempts to call her jiějiě, but mispronounces it, much to everyone's amusement.
  • All Chinese People Know Kung-Fu: She is Chinese, though she was actually trained in kung fu by her sifu (and adoptive father) to explain her expertise succinctly.
  • Animorphism: The power granted by the Prodigious is the ability to transform into the animal that each of the renlings represent.
  • Anti-Hero: Fei doesn't like stealing, but she feels she had no choice if she wants to get the name of her father's killers out of Cash. She still helps people without personal gain, though.
  • Artful Dodger: Fei is a street-smart thief and pickpocket. She is the one who steals Marinette's bag and at first only helps Marinette in hopes of getting a large amount of money to her fence, for information to help her get revenge on whoever killed her father.
  • Breath Weapon: Her dragon form can shoot lightning from her mouth.
  • Cunning Linguist: She's perfectly fluent in English aside from her native Mandarin. It comes to her help when Marinette meets her, who, as shown in the series, despite being Chinese from her mother's side, doesn't know Mandarin and so they communicate to each other using English.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: As a baby, she was adopted by Wu and was raised to protect the Prodigious from those that would misuse it. However, Wu would be killed when his school was attacked by their enemies, leaving Fei orphaned once more. Now she prowls the streets of Shanghai as an Artful Dodger, pickpocketing people and fencing their stolen valuables to get information from the black market clients that employ her. As a result, she's forsaken her father's teachings... until she meets Ladybug and Cat Noir.
  • Dirt Forcefield: Despite being an orphan who lives in an abandoned school ruined from a fire and driven to pickpocketing, Fei looks completely immaculate throughout "Shanghai - The Legend of Lady Dragon" with clothes in as good shape as Marinette's and she even seems to be wearing more blush than her. The worst her appearance suffers throughout the special is Your Makeup Is Running.
  • Dragons Up the Yin Yang: She's a Chinese superheroine whose ultimate form is a dragon.
  • Elemental Powers: Her dragon form grants the ability to control elements of the storm: lightning, wind and water. Unlike Ryuko, who becomes those elements, Renren can command existing sources of those elements (or breathe them, in the case of lightning) for much larger attacks.
  • Fiery Redhead: Downplayed - Fei is a skilled martial artist who's not afraid to use it when she has to, and driven for Revenge against the one who killed her adoptive father...but her hair is actually black (with one pink streak) and only becomes a bright vibrant red after she transforms into Renren, which requires her to let go from her Revenge to fully use its power.
  • Foil: To Marinette. Character design-wise, they wear similar clothing — a black cardigan and a white shirt, and instead of pink pants, Fei wears red pants.
  • Happily Adopted: As a baby, she was adopted by her late shifu, Wu, and she wanted nothing more than avenge his death until realizing doing so was against what her adoptive father taught her.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Marinette's Oblivious Guilt Slinging and subsequent shock that Fei deceived her wears on Fei throughout the Shanghai special - up until Fei's failure to transform into a dragon because Revenge Is Not Justice causes her shame over her failure to live up to her adoptive father's teachings to come to the fore so she leaves and states she is unworthy of wielding the Prodigious. It takes Marinette assuring her otherwise to put her back in action.
  • Magical Guide: Two-fold; the Prodigious comes with the Renlings, who only she can see, that can guide her on the virtues she needs to access their powers. When she puts her jade bracelet back on, Mei Shi appears in a renling-like form, visible to everyone, and states his work with her isn't finished.
  • Martial Pacifist: Befitting her kung-fu training, Fei has no compulsion against using her fists she sees it as needed but she clearly prefers just running away whenever she has a chance to instead. When Lian, Kang, and Jiao accost her for pickpocketing, she knocks them down by surprising them as her strikes barely miss them instead of actively hitting them for trying to stop a crime.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Rénrén means a person who carries a responsibility, befitting Fei having the responsibility of guarding the Dragon Cave, the Prodigious, and protecting Shanghai.
    • Her name is a homonym in pinyin for Rénrén means "everyone", seeing that she's the protector of Shanghai and is the human part of the Prodigious.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: When transformed into Ladydragon, her hair becomes bright red.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Her transformation into Ladydragon lengthens her ponytail to be long enough to go down to her butt.
  • Psychoactive Powers: The forms she can take are limited by her ability to realize the virtues each renling represents. To access her dragon form, she needs to be in a state of mind for justice, something her desire for vengeance initially keeps her achieving.
  • Revenge: She wants Revenge on the people that killed her adopted father, which was against his teachings. In the end, she abandons this path because Revenge Is Not Justice and she was unable to transform into a dragon until she lets go of it.
  • Shapeshifter Baggage: Ladydragon makes full use of her different forms by sometimes transforming into a smaller one to slip through tight spaces or dodge attacks that were aimed at a much larger form.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: She's a good bit less girly at a glance than Marinette due to knowing kung-fu, and does up her hair in a ponytail.
  • Transformation Trinket: Her Prodigious is a necklace that allows her to become Renren. Unlike a Miraculous, she can transform at will without speaking an invocation.
  • Your Makeup Is Running: When Fei is crying in one scene, her tears smudge her mascara.

    Hou Wang

Hou Wang

A Chinese superhero.

  • Bilingual Bonus: In the Shanghai special, he isn't named directly, but the labels for his action figures at the toy stand read in Chinese "Hou Wang Qishi Yuan", translating to "Monkey King (for) 70 Yuan".
  • The Cameo: Action figures of him are seen being sold at the toy stand in the Shanghai special.
  • Hero of Another Story: It's implied that he's an active Chinese superhero, but wherever he was during Yan Woshi's attack on Shanghai is unknown.
  • Monkey King Lite: To Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, from the Chinese literary classic Journey to the West.
  • One-Steve Limit: Hou Wang (猴王) directly translates to "Monkey King", similar to the Miraculous user King Monkey. Both are based on the Monkey King from Journey to the West.

The Order of the Guardians

     General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/order_of_the_guardians___temp_screenshot_1.png

The Order of the Guardians is a group of guardians who protect and deliver Miraculouses, inhabiting a temple where the inactive Miraculouses were kept.

  • Adults Are Useless: Despite their claim that the Miraculous are to be used for good, we rarely see them do anything, and when they do, it is often not very useful, except for Master Wang Fu. Unlike the superheroes from New York or Fei Wu from Shanghai, they are very rarely seen actively fighting antagonists. Possibly justified, as they may still be occupied with learning how to live in the modern world.
  • Back from the Brink: The sentimonster Feast consumed all of them save for Fu, who hid the Miraculous for over a hundred years on his lonesome. Ladybug and Cat Noir defeating Feast freed them all, rebirthing the Order into modern times.
  • Big Good: The Order of the Guardians are the highest authority when it comes to the Miraculous, being the order meant to protect and distribute them.
  • Cape Busters: Part of their training involves becoming strong enough to hold off or even overpower Miraculous users in case they go rogue. This is best exemplified by Su Han, who overpowers Ladybug and Cat Noir at once without breaking a sweat.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: All guardians are trained in the art of Mirakung Fu, a form of martial arts made to fight miraculous wielders and only miraculous wielders, not villains created by their powers. When Su-Han is faced against an akumatized Fu, he is quick to run from that fight.
  • Good Is Not Nice: The Order of the Guardians are the authority of all things miraculous, and since the miraculous were created specifically for heroism, this is a given. However, they are an ancient order with ancient rules and uncompromising traditions that can rub a lot of modern day people the wrong way. Master Fu was inducted into the order against his will at a very young age and they have very strict rules in regards to what the kwamis and the heroes that wield are allowed to do.
  • Hypocrite: Su-Han implies that one of the rules they have about the miraculous is that only adults are allowed to use them as kids and teenagers are much less able to wield them. With that said, it is implied that all of their members are forcibly inducted into their ranks as children, Fu having been taken from his family as a child.
  • Sparse List of Rules: The Order runs on a list of at least 133 rules in regards to the miraculous, including:
    • Kwamis aren't allowed to live outside of the Miracle Box.
    • Guardians aren't allowed to lose a Miraculous.
    • A Guardian isn't ever allowed to wear a Miraculous, no matter the situation.
    • No involving civilians in a fight.
  • Warrior Monk: The Guardians are an order of monks set in Tibet and are adept in martial arts.

    Master Wang Fu/Jade Turtle

Akumatized form: Furious Fu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1000003651.png

Voiced by: Gilbert Lévy (FR), Paul St. Peter (EN) Foreign VAs

The keeper of the Miraculous and holder of the turtle bracelet. When he uses the Turtle Miraculous, he transforms into the superhero Jade Turtle.

  • All Asians Wear Conical Straw Hats: As Jade Turtle, he wears his shield on his head in a manner resembling an eastern rice hat.
  • All for Nothing: He essentially sacrificed his identity as a guardian and made Marinette his successor in order to ensure Hawk Moth wouldn't get the Miraculous in the box. One season later, during "Strike Back", Félix abuses Marinette's trust in Adrien in order to betray her as Flairmidable, uses his Fetch power to snatch her yo-yo and hand it over to Gabriel, who uses it to take every single Miraculous within the box before she can react.
  • Amnesiac Resonance: After relinquishing the Miraculous Box to Ladybug, along with his memories of his time as a Guardian, Marinette takes him to a train out of the country where he meets up with Marianne. Fu immediately gets a Crush Filter and declares that even though he just met her (or so he thinks), he feels as if he has known her for an eternity.
  • Asian Speekee Engrish: In the French dub, Fu has a raspier voice and a more pronounced Chinese accent.
  • Beginner's Luck: Fu had barely started his training as a guardian before he became the Last of His Kind, and several decades later, he had to choose heroes to stop Hawk Moth. Despite that, he understood the fundamental nature of heroism enough that he chose really well. Of course, luck (in the form of Tikki) is on his side...
  • Big Good: As the Guardian of the Miraculous, it is Fu's job to oversee the protection of the Miraculous and make sure that they don't end up in the wrong hands.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: Because he thinks the heroes can't possibly defeat Feast, and because he doesn't want them to risk their lives fixing his mistake, he covertly takes back their Miraculouses.
  • The Call Knows Where You Live: Ironically, by fleeing the site of his greatest shame and moving to another continent, Fu brought himself into the very city that Hawk Moth would later prey on.
  • Character Catchphrase: Whenever he gives more Miraculous to Marinette to lend out to other heroes, he says, "Marinette Dupain-Cheng, pick an ally you can trust to fight alongside you on this mission. Choose wisely. Such powers are meant to serve the greater good. Once the mission is over, you must retrieve the Miraculous from them."
  • The Chooser of the One: He possesses seventeen of the nineteen Miraculous, the peacock and butterfly brooches being the exception. He covertly gave Marinette and Adrien their Miraculous. He normally lets Marinette hand out other Miraculous temporarily, but when she's captured by Party Crasher, he gives the Monkey Miraculous to Kim, who had caught him when he lost his balance earlier in the episode.
  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": A Running Gag has his back give out every time he tries to transform into Jade Turtle, preventing him from doing so. Until the Season 3 finale, where we finally get to see him in action for the first (and last) time.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: "The Collector" hints at this, and "Feast" gives full details — he made a "mistake" that led to the destruction of his temple. Specifically, he accidentally created a Sentimonster who eats Miraculous, and this Sentimonster destroyed the temple and all of the existing known Miraculous except the box of nineteen that Fu managed to spirit away.
  • Death Seeker: During his Heroic BSoD in "Feast", he loses hope that anything other than death can make up for his sins.
  • Disney Death: In the season 3 finale, he initially appears to be dead after he gives up his Guardianship to Ladybug and his Shellter is shattered by Hawk Moth's Sentimonster. Turns out he is alive, but he did lose all his memories of his former role in the process.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When Master Fu relinquishes his duties as guardian in "Miracle Queen", he suffers from amnesia of most events in his life, including all memories associated with the Miraculouses like of Marinette and Marianne. Combined with his advanced age, this brings to mind degenerative conditions suffered by those of advanced age like senile dementia.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Has been in the background of the episodes "Antibug", "Animan", and "The Gamer" before properly being introduced in "Princess Fragrance" and his role being explained in the two origins episodes.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: As Hawk Moth is aware that Marianne knows the Guardian, she cannot be with Fu until he's been dealt with accordingly. Or at least, not until Fu ceases to be relevant.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: In the season 3 finale, he transfers the Guardianship to Ladybug, sacrificing his memories of his role in the process.
  • Last of His Kind: Fu is the last vestige of the Order of the Guardians, or at least he was...
  • Literal-Minded: Inverted. In "Syren", he tries deciphering the ingredients to the transformation potions for the kwamis, seeing every written description as metaphor. Because of this, he never thought to use a literal "tear of joy".
  • Meaningful Name: The most common character used for Fu's name (傅) translates to "teacher" or "mentor." It can also be interpreted to mean "good fortune" and "happiness" (福).
  • The Medic: "Princess Fragrance" reveals that he can heal sick and injured kwami, and his dialogue seems to imply it's an ability of his Miraculous. note
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Downplayed. While he doesn't actually die, season 3 ends with him wiping his own memories to make Ladybug the new Guardian, achieving mostly the same narrative effect.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: Though not necessarily tiny, Fu is shorter than middle schoolers Marinette and Adrien.
  • My Greatest Failure:
    • Implied. Judging by a conversation between him and Wayzz concerning his choice of Marinette and Adrien, Fu had made a mistake involving a new Miraculous holder once, and he hopes for that to never happen again. It's inferred to have something to do with the Butterfly and/or Peacock Miraculous, both of which are owned by Hawk Moth.
    • "The Collector" hints at his mistake, and "Feast" reveals what happened in full: he was an acolyte of an order called the Guardians, until he was tasked with guarding a Miracle Box for 24 hours without any food. Frustrated with his duties and extremely hungry, he used the peacock miraculous to create a sentimonster to get him something to eat. Unfortunately his resentment towards the miraculous made it devour them instead and eventually destroy the whole temple, and while escaping the destruction he lost both the butterfly and peacock miraculous.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Subverted. He tries to transform so he can fight Feast alongside Ladybug and Cat Noir, but it doesn't work. They reassure him that supporting them from the sidelines is enough.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: He can create potions which grant the kwamis additional powers. So far, we know he can create at least seven, which he gives to Marinette and Adrien.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: His character design strongly resembles Pat Morita's Mr. Miyagi character from The Karate Kid franchise.
  • Obfuscating Disability: Master Fu is far more spry than he acts when testing Marinette and Adrien.
  • Properly Paranoid: He lives under an alias, stating that you can never be too careful. Given that Hawk Moth is actively searching for him, this proves to be a wise precaution. It especially rings true when someone close to him gets akumatized and immediately starts to spill the beans (all on her own - Hawk Moth didn't even know she knew anything strategically important). Thankfully, she didn't know enough to truly endanger him. (It also lets you know just how dedicated he is to taking zero chances - for his true name to be a total dead end, he'd have to have been living under the assumed name for most of his time in Paris, even long before Hawk Moth, or there'd be knowledge of a "Wang Fu" who disappeared when Hawk Moth appeared, or when the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculous were lost, or some other time you'd expect a Guardian of the Miraculous to need to vanish. Instead, Wang Fu just doesn't exist.) Also, he insists that Alya and Nino only be loaned the Fox and Turtle Miraculous as needed, and they must be returned to him after each mission. You'd probably think it'd be okay if they held on to them full-time... until "Oblivio", that is.
  • Put on a Bus: Well, Put on a Train, but even so. He formally gives up being the Guardian of the Miracle Box during "Miracle Queen" and entrusts the care of the Miraculouses to Ladybug. This, however, costs him his memories, since when a Guardian renounces their position, their memories are erased to keep the secret alive. After this, he leaves the country on a train with Marianne.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He's 186 years old, but looks like a regular old man. How he's lived so long isn't explained. According to Word of God, his longevity is tied to his lifestyle rather than his Miraculous.
  • Refusal of the Call: "Feast" reveals that he didn't willingly join the Order of the Guardians; he was forced to by his parents. His resentment of the Order bled into a sentimonster he accidentally created while trying to get some food during a training exercise, causing the destruction of the Order.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Has broken quite a few of the Guardians' rules to ensure Paris is kept safe from someone like Hawk Moth.
  • Secret-Keeper: As the one who chose Marinette and Adrien to wield the Miraculouses, he is one of the only ones who knows their true identities.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: He sacrifices his identity as a guardian and his memories to make Marinette the next guardian and ensure Hawk Moth doesn't get the Miraculous. Come "Strike Back", Marinette is backstabbed by Félix/Flairmidable, who hands Gabriel all the Miraculous from within the box anyway.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Although he was the one who gave Marinette and Adrien their kwamis, he kept to the shadows for the beginning of their career. He reveals himself to Marinette in "Volpina" and to Adrien in "Syren".
  • Secret Test of Character: Master Fu pretends to be feeble in front of Marinette and Adrien, both of whom rush to his aid unprompted. This convinces him that they deserve the power of the Miraculous.
  • Shipper on Deck: He states in "Origins" that Marinette and Adrien are "meant for each other".
  • Shout-Out:
  • So Proud of You: Towards Marinette and Adrien after he sees how the two have already changed after the first times with their respective Miraculous in the Origins episode.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: As Hawk Moth is aware that Marianne knows the Guardian, Fu cannot be with her until he's been dealt with accordingly.
  • Technologically Blind Elders: Zigzagged.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: Season 4 retroactively reveals that as a guardian he had violated their many rules and conditions (Guardians are not allowed to use the Miraculouses, only adults are allowed to use them, no involving civilians, etc.), but there is no mistake that the decisions he made were for the greater good. This is best emphasized with how he chose Marinette and Adrien, having chosen them when they proved to be compassionate and selfless, rather than anything grander or more pragmatic.
  • Transformation Trinket: His bracelet is his Miraculous.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: While creating a sentimonster to steal some food, he inadvertently projected all of his resentment towards the Miraculouses and their guardians into it. This would cascade into not only into the temple's destruction, but the rise of Hawk Moth many years later.
  • Weak Boss, Strong Underlings: Big Good Master Wang Fu cannot take the physical toll of using a Miraculous due to his old age (he's well over 100 years). This forces him to Recruit Teenagers with Attitude by giving them Miraculous jewels, so they can go and fight the evil Miraculous user Hawk Moth for him. The younger heroes are inexperienced, though, so Master Fu remains the Guardian of the Miraculous and the titular character's mentor.
  • Wise Old Turtle: The Guardian of the Miraculous and the closest thing Marinette and Adrien have to a mentor. He's an elderly Chinese man who — fittingly — wields the Turtle Miraculous.

    Su-Han
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/su_han_square.png
Voiced by: Francisco Júnior (BP), Kaiji Tang (EN) Foreign VAs

A Celestial Guardian of the Miraculous. He is a traditionalist and disapproves of Marinette.

  • Adults Are Useless: Despite being an authority figure who should theoretically be a major ally against Hawk Moth, his only actual actions are to antagonize Marinette twice over, get completely distracted from his duties by internet cat videos, and make promises of reinforcements that he fails to uphold.
  • Always Someone Better: He pretty much manhandles Ladybug and Cat Noir combined when they go against him, something only really done by akumatized villains in general.
  • Anger Born of Worry: A lot of his temper and strict adherence to the rules is because he knows how dangerous Kwamis can be and fears the devastation that could be unleashed if they aren’t used properly.
  • Back from the Dead: He was one of the Guardians who was eaten by Feast 172 years ago and was restored after its defeat.
  • Badass Normal: Despite not using any Miraculous, he is still able to hold his own in combat against Ladybug and Cat Noir - as he puts it, Guardians are trained to be able to overpower Miraculous holders in case they go rogue. Later, he also gives Furious Fu a really good fight.
  • Bald Head of Toughness: He's a badass monk who can fight Ladybug and Cat Noir to a standstill and doesn't have a hair on his head.
  • Calling Your Attacks: When using his Mirakung Fu he has a habit of calling out his moves, move-names including "Stream of Justice Blows Right Down, Murders the Enemy-Armies".
  • Control Freak: His biggest priority is whether or not the rules that the Guardians follow are being followed and blames any inadequacies Fu and Marinette have on their lack of discipline and justifying his Lack of Empathy on this.
  • Dirty Coward: Played with. He is not against attacking Ladybug and Cat Noir to retrieve their miraculous and the Miracle Box and assaulting an elderly and amnesiac Fu for his walking cane, but the moment Furious Fu appears, he is quick to run and hide while berating Ladybug and Cat Noir for their form from a safe distance while they deal with the aftermath of his apathetic actions. Eventually he does intervene and gives Furious Fu a good fight even without using a Miraculous, though he ends up losing as he implied before that his training was just to deal with Miraculous holders not supervillains.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: He had many insulting names for Fu when he was his student for not meeting his standards such as Cry-Baby and Pigeon-Legs, which he still continues to call him as an adult. Even at the end of the episode where he gains more respect for his old student does he have to remember to call him by his name.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: He's a real jerk about it, but as season 4 goes to show, he's not exactly wrong that Marinette isn't really a good fit for a Guardian, let alone Fu's successor; she gives out Miraculous like free candy, acts like a Control Freak during most situations, keeps her trusted partner Cat Noir in the dark about most things, and her love for Adrien leaves her very vulnerable to be taken advantage of, which ends up happening in "Strike Back".
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • Wrath. For a monk, he is quick to anger and is quick to insult, berate or threaten anyone who violates his code or disrespects his authority in any way to the point where it gets Shadow Moth's attention. He at least has some level of awareness of his anger as a problem, as the moment he sees an akuma coming for him, he centers himself by saying "Anger is mine, but I am not my anger.", calming himself and driving it away.
Su-Han: If I still had my staff, I would hunt you down in no time!
    • His Lack of Empathy. As a high ranking Guardian, his purpose in life is to watch over everything Miraculous-related for the greater good of the world. When it comes with dealing with social interactions or more immediate threats, he can be rather tactless and suffers from Theory Tunnel Vision just to maintain the high ground. When he's told about Shadow Moth and how Ladybug and Cat Noir have been doing fairly well for themselves, all Su-Han cares about is how Fu and Marinette aren't following the Order's rules and that there is someone out there more qualified to use their miraculous. This comes to its logical conclusion when Ladybug calls him out for expecting them to fix the mess his tactless behavior caused (getting Fu akumatized) and refusing to do anything himself (since he is only trained to fight Miraculous users).
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: He's been effectively dead for over a century and a half, and it shows. Su-Han is thrown off by modern developments like television and cellphones.
  • Good Is Not Nice: His goal is to protect the world from the dangers of the Miraculous. In this duty, he has no problem fighting children and mugging Master Fu for his staff.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He's extremely rude and aggressive towards Marinette, but he's completely justified in being worried about the fate of Paris riding on the backs of two teenagers. He also holds Fu in utter contempt, which is harsh in light of how the man still managed to protect the Miraculous by himself for over a hundred years without much in the way of training or resources - but he wasn't even aware that was the case until Marinette told him so Su-Han was still mostly stuck on his previous impression that Fu was just the young Guardian initiate whose weakness created a Sentimonster that destroyed his entire order for over a hundred years (and handed the most powerful Miraculous to untrained teenagers to further fuel his bias).
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He is crotchety and dismissive of both Marinette and Master Fu, but Marinette ultimately does win him over and he admits that her methods work.
  • Just a Kid: He is dismissive of Marinette as Ladybug due to her youth. He eases up after she and Cat Noir defeat Furious Fu.
  • Koan: He tends to say these ad nauseum to the point of whether or not you can't be certain if they mean anything.
Su-Han: The claws of the hungry cat, powerless against the milkman's iron pole!
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He doesn't know the identity of Cat Noir as Marinette doesn't know and he can't track him with his staff because Cat Noir doesn't possess the Miracle Box. Which is his biggest issue with the current situation as he doesn't like the idea that a Miraculous, let alone one as dangerous as the Destruction one, being held by a unknown person who can't be monitored or answered to potentially dangerous.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Su-Han is prone to these. While he may have intended to give the Miraculous to sensible adults and have them fight against Shadow Moth when he tried to take them from Ladybug and Cat Noir in "Furious Fu", it is highly unlikely that he would have succeeded to do that. Most likely, Shadow Moth would have found out and tried to steal them. Considering how Su-Han can‘t fight off akumatized villains despite knowing Mirakung Fu, this most likely would have led to Shadow Moth‘s victory. Again, in "Ephemeral", he forces Ladybug to learn about Cat Noir‘s identity, which she refused before for security reasons. This time, this leads to Shadow Moth‘s victory, though the Kwami Sass is able to undo it using time travel.
  • No-Sell: In his debut episode, he sees an akuma coming after him and places himself in a meditative state to drive it off before it can corrupt him.
  • Properly Paranoid: He is paranoid over not only the fate of Paris resting on the shoulders of two teenagers, but that he can't track Cat Noir, as neither he nor Ladybug know his civillian identity and he doesn't have the Miraculous Box. Come "Strike Back", Paris is bound to face Hawk Moth at his strongest now that he has obtained every single Miraculous within the box, which he did after Félix/Flairmidable betrayed Ladybug by playing on her blind devotion to Adrien and her lack of knowledge of his real identity.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Downplayed and zig-zagged to a degree. Su-Han certainly doesn't seem that way at first, but in the end it really just takes Ladybug standing up for herself for him to admit he was being unreasonable.
  • Red Is Heroic: Su-Han wears a red and brown guardian monk suit, and he is very dedicated to his job, which is to protect the world from the dangers of the Miraculous.
  • Secret-Keeper: He uses his staff to track down the Miracle Box and learns Ladybug's secret identity in the process.
  • Warrior Monk: He is trained in Mirakung Fu, a martial art designed to fight against rogue miraculous-users.
  • Would Harm a Senior: When Ladybug and Cat Noir steal his staff, he mugs the 186-year-old Fu (knocking down Marianne as well) to take his cane so he can track them down.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He shows no qualms about engaging in a fight with the teenaged Ladybug and Cat Noir.

The late guardian of the Dragon Cave in Shanghai, safeguarding the Prodigious. He was killed when his enemies attacked his school, leaving his adoptive daughter Fei as his successor.

Historic Holders

    Jeanne d'Arc/Scarlet Fate

A previous holder of the Ladybug Miraculous. Also known as Scarlet Fate while she was a holder.

  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: In this world, Joan of Arc was a Magical Girl.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Her hair is even shorter than Adrien's. As well, Dark Grimalkin by contrast is shown to have hair that's at least long enough to go down to his shoulders.
  • Dumb Jock: Downplayed. Jeanne isn't shown as outright stupid in Reunion (indeed, she jabbers on for a whole minute for answering the question of who was king of France in 1423 about the variety of things that occurred to lead up to true answer of "no one") but she's athletic while tending to prefer to just charge at situations, and also dismissive of intellectual things like writing (to the point where she thinks a fountain pen's only use is as a tiny sword...though she is from medieval France). She ends up expressing admiration for Marinette's own intelligence by the end of it.
  • Faking the Dead: Her memories as the holder of the Ladybug Miraculous indicate that she escaped her historic execution by burning with a trick...hopefully, since the reunion of her only contains her memories while she was Scarlet Fate, and Jeanne renounced the Ladybug Miraculous soon after her escape.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Very Downplayed - she appears in Reunion as the sum of Jeanne d'Arc's (or rather, Scarlet Fate's) memories while she was a holder of the Ladybug Miraculous which can still perceive around herself (but not physically affect anything) but only Marinette can see her. The only trouble being out of the time period actually causes her is possibly mistaking a fountain pen for some kind of tiny sword.
  • Foil: Just like Marinette, she fell in love with her time period's current Cat Miraculous' holder due to finding out how kind he was - only she knew who he actually was and what he looked like when it happened. She also had her love life obstructed as a Miraculous holder by, well literal monarchs.
  • Helmets Are Hardly Heroic: Despite essentially being a female knight in medieval times fighting in a vicious, bloody war, Jeanne never wears a helmet. This may be the reason why she has several scars on her face.
  • Highly-Conspicuous Uniform: She doesn't wear a mask and suit like Marinette, but compensates with her red-and-black-polka-dot tabard in addition to the gems in her sword matching the Ladybug Miraculous' yoyo/earrings' pattern. Dark Grimalkin is comparably subtler with just a cat's green pawprint on his chest and his helmet having cat ears.
  • Jesus Taboo: At no point are the real Jeanne's devotion to God or her claims of being instructed by Archangel Michael mentioned.note  In fact, she would most likely be horrified by serving a magical creature.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Being more athletic and bold, wanting to charge right into combat, she tends to serve as the masculine girl to Dark Grimalkin's feminine boy who is more gentle and fighting to protect others.
  • Love Across Battlelines: She fell in love with Dark Grimalkin even though her kingdom of France was fighting against the kingdom of England.
  • Rugged Scar: Her face has four scars on it to tell you that her sword isn't just for show - the one of her cheek is x-shaped.
  • "X" Marks the Hero: This Ladybug Miraculous holder's Rugged Scars includes an x-shaped scar on her cheek.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: How she talks in the English translation.

    Dark Grimalkin
A previous holder of the Cat Miraculous.

  • Black Knight: In appearance, though not in nature. He's an English knight dressed in black armor with a black helmet and a black tabard with a bright green pawprint, and wields a sinister-looking black axe in addition to the staff of the Cat Miraculous. Jeanne, however, outright calls him the hero who protected the Kingdom of England at the time, and his introductory card shows him fighting a fire-breathing dragon in order to defend a village.
  • Cool Helmet: Instead of a mask like Adrien, he wears a face-covering black helmet with cat ears.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He wears black armor and robe, and is kind and compassionate enough to help the enemy kingdom of England's civilians caught in the crossfire.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: In personality, if not quite in appearance. He's described as a genuine and compassionate hero who protected the innocents of England and conducted himself with honor in the war against France.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Unlike Jeanne, who kept her hair short and had a number of scars on her face, Dark Grimalkin has long black hair that falls past his shoulders and a kind, compassionate face unmarked by any scars.
  • Love Across Battlelines: He fell in love with Jeanne while the two's kingdoms of England and France respectively were fighting a war against each other.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Being more compassionate and gentle, wanting to fight to protect, people, he tends to serve as the feminine boy to Scarlet Fate's Masculine girl who is athletic and bold, wanting to charge right into combat.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Despite being willing to fight for his kingdom, he refused to hurt the children of the kingdom of France.

Alternate universe

    Gabriel Agreste/Betterfly

Betterfly (Gabriel Agreste)

Kamikotized form: Guardian Angel

Click here to see him as Betterfly

Voiced by: Antoine Tomé (FR), Keith Silverstein (EN)

The heroic version of Gabriel Agreste from an alternate universe. When he uses the Butterfly Miraculous, he transforms into the superhero Betterfly.

  • All-Loving Hero: Gabriel protects Marinette (whom he believed to be a normal civilian) from Shadybug and Claw Noir, asks for Alya and Cat Noir's permission to kamikotize them into superheroes and despite Shadybug and Claw Noir being his enemies, he tries to reform them to the side of good, even becoming horrified when Claw Noir got a cataclysm injury.
  • The Atoner: He previously swore loyalty to the Supreme's evil rule, and as a result he lost his wife, so he became Betterfly to redeem himself and free his universe.
  • Benevolent Boss: In the special's opening, Gabriel is shown to be nice towards his kwami Nooroo and uses his powers for good, unlike his main counterpart.
  • Big Good: This version of Gabriel is this for the Miraculous Paris special. He crosses the multiverse to seek help from Ladybug and Cat Noir to fight Shadybug and Claw Noir, who comes to their world to steal the Butterfly Miraculous from him, and then encourages his villains to become better people.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Like the original Gabriel Agreste/Monarch, this version is decked out in a dark purple suit. However, unlike his evil counterpart, Betterfly creates Kamikos, which are able to kamikotize people into superheroes.
  • Dub Name Change: In the original French dub, he's known as 'Hesperia', a reference to the genus of butterflies known as skippers.
  • A Father to His Men: After alternate Ladybug and Paw Noir reformed and joined his Resistance, Betterfly welcomed them and reassured they'll succeed into defeating the Supreme as they're now a team, and while unaware that Paw Noir is actually his son.
  • Friend to All Children: He apologizes to Marinette for suddenly appearing in her room and takes her away to protect her from Shadybug and Claw Noir.
  • Good Counterpart: He is the heroic version of Gabriel Agreste/Monarch in the main universe. While both lost their respective Emilies, the Gabriel that became Betterfly never had a Start of Darkness and accepted her loss, resolving to use the power of the Butterfly Miraculous to help others.
  • Hope Bringer: As Betterfly, unlike Hawk Moth/Monarch, the good version of Gabriel embodies all the ideals of hope and freedom he stood for to heart. He only uses his powers to kamikotize willing subjects who seek to help others, instead of preying on those with negative emotions and manipulating them into becoming villains. He also encourages Ladybug and Cat Noir when they feel down after losing all the other Miraculouses to his bad counterpart.
  • Light Is Good: Similar to his main counterpart, Gabriel wears light colored clothing in his civilian form, however unlike his counterpart, Alternate Gabriel is on the side of good.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Zig-Zagged across dimensions! This version of Gabriel shares several traits with the main version of Adrien/Cat Noir. He's compassionate, cooperative and selfless. Basically everything you'd expect if the main universe's Adrien was an adult with the Butterfly instead of the Cat. The Dub Name Change even implies a fondness for puns!
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Zigzagged even further with his actual son Claw Noir, who used his persona as a means to act out for motives similar to the main universe's Gabriel...only to pull a 180 in the end, revealing a person very like both his counterpart and his father.
  • Meaningful Name: Betterfly talks at length about his hope and belief in a better world. His original French dub name, Hesperia, in addition to being a reference to a type of butterfly, also sounds similar to the French word for "hope": espoir.
  • Parental Neglect: For all that he's the Good Counterpart to Monarch, he still seems to neglect Adrien, as Claw Noir laments that his father spends all his time doing fashion design and doesn't seem to care that Emilie died, showing the two have a strained relationship at best. In a bit of irony, the truth may be that Gabriel is spending his private time fighting The Supreme as Betterfly, often against Claw Noir.
  • Tragic Hero: He decided to become a superhero due to his wife's death by his misuse of the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculouses. However, this caused him to be pursued relentlessly by The Supreme to retrieve the Miraculous.

    Ubiquity/Ladybiquity/Ubiquity Noire
A young woman with the power to connect with copies of herself in alternate universes and open portals between them. Her true identity is Alya Cesaire and her Kamiko (the good version of an Akuma) is in her glasses.

Ladybug is given the same power to counter Monarch when he attempts to travel the multiverse. She has different names depending on which powers she's using in tandem with it. She's Ladybiquity when wielding it in tandem with the Ladybug Miraculous, just Ubiquity when she's not, and Ubiquity Noire when using it in tandem with the Cat Miraculous. The Kamiko is in her Ladybug earrings.
  • Alternate Self: Zig-zagged. The original Ubiquity is Alya from Shadybug and Claw Noir's universe, but the nature of her powers means she stays in that universe and the prime Alya also gains the power. Betterfly transforms the prime Alya the following times. When Ladybug is given the power, it spreads to all her copies, which she retains control over as the alternate Alya briefly did with her counterpart.
  • Fighting Across Time and Space: While Alya uses the power to connect to a single duplicate and then open portals between them, Ladybug uses the power to spread herself to every version of herself across the multiverse, so every universe Monarch tries to invade has some version of Ubiquity waiting for him (normal Ubiquity when Marinette isn't also using the Ladybug Miraculous, Ladybiquity when she is, and Ubiquity Noire when also using the Cat Miraculous).
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Alya's hair doubles in length when granted the power. Ladybug's twintails grow to her knees when using it, and her single, long ponytail as Lady Noire grows to touch the floor.
  • Thinking Up Portals: Alya as Ubiquity is able to transport people across universes through her cape, which opens into a portal that connects two versions of herself.
  • Token Good Teammate: As this version of Gabriel uses the Butterfly Miraculous for good, Ubiquity and Celesticat are rare examples of it being used to create heroes rather than a Villain of the Week.

    Celesticat
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/celesticat_square.png
A superhero with the power of flight, and the strength to carry multiple people away from danger. His true identity is Cat Noir, and his Kamiko is in his staff.
  • Blinded by the Light: The light from his body is so bright that it blinds everyone around them, including their aggressors. Shadybug has to conjure a pair of shades in order to give chase.
  • Flight: His main power is the ability to fly, which he uses to get himself, Ladybug and Betterfly away from Shadybug and Claw Noir.
  • Good Counterpart: Of Cat Blanc. They're both all-white versions of Cat Noir under the effects of the Butterfly Miraculous. But while Cat Blanc was made from Hawk Moth's Akuma and had unlimited destructive power, Celisticat has the power of flight from Betterfly's Kamiko, and is firmly on the side of good.
  • Guardian Angel: The central concept of his design and powers, being winged and glowing brilliantly to rescue his allies.
  • Light Is Good: He wears white and produces a dazzling light from his body. He's also the result of Betterfly's Super-Empowering, and as such is as heroic and in control of himself as ever.
  • Power Gives You Wings: His ability to fly manifests as a huge white pair of wings on his back.
  • Refusal of the Call: Cat Noir initially was understably reluctant to accept this kamikotization until Betterfly reassured him he wasn't a villain.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Betterfly kamikotized him in need of an escape from the battle with Shadybug and Claw Noir. After he serves that purpose in a couple of minutes, Betterfly releases him.

    Marinette Dupain-Cheng/Shadybug/Ladybug

Ladybug (Marinette Dupain-Cheng)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marinette_dupain_cheng_alternate_universe.png
Click here to see her as Shadybug

The villainous version of Marinette Dupain-Cheng from an alternate universe. When she uses the Ladybug Miraculous, she transforms into Shadybug when she was a villain and into Ladybug when she decided to become a hero.

  • Alternate Self: She's a version of Marinette who was unable to befriend anyone thanks to Chloé, becoming an Anti-Villain as a result.
  • Boring, but Practical: As Shadybug, her Lucky Charm is used to summon weapons or other tools to aid her. She also seems to be intentionally summoning the items she wants, even though Claw Noir mocks her powers as "luck", in contrast to Ladybug summoning random objects that will ultimately save the day.
  • Cast from Lifespan: She is able to use her full powers as many times as she wants (in contrast to Ladybug, who only gains that skill late into season 5, which is several months later in-universe) despite not being old enough because she's using them for evil, but as a consequence doing so drains her life force.
  • Despair Event Horizon: After learning that her and Claw Noir's Miraculous are unable to grant a wish, she breaks down sobbing, remarking that both she and Claw have gone too far for any wish to help them.
  • Dub Name Change: In the original French dub, she's known as 'Toxinelle' ("Toxic" + "Ladybug" in French).
  • Emo Teen: She's Marinette but with a Friendless Background and dresses in noticeably darker fashion with makeup.
  • Friendless Background: Unlike the main timeline, this Marinette never got the chance to befriend anyone thanks to Chloé's bullying.
  • Good Costume Switch: Her costume changes colors to resemble Ladybug's after she decides to do good instead of evil.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Alternate Marinette, as she spent all her life alone and depressed, as shown when she talked with main Sabine, who kindly reassured her when she was upset and much to Marinette's surprise told her she loved her.
  • I Just Want to Be You: After reading Marinette's diary, Shadybug is jealous of her alternate self and hits on the idea of using a wish to swap their lives. She's stopped from doing so by a spell placed on her Tikki and Plagg that blocks their fusion into Gimmi.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Her eyes become their normal blue color when transformed after deciding to become good.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: When detrasformed and talking to Main Sabine, alternate Marinette tells her that "her" sewing machine was slightly damaged, while seeing in the mirror that she got dark veins in her face for her failed wish attempt.
  • Killer Yoyo: Has the usual yoyo with the addition of retractable blades.
  • Makeup Is Evil: She wears noticeable makeup and is the Evil Counterpart of Ladybug.
  • Missing Mom: During her Motive Rant to Ladybug she mentions she doesn't have a loving mom (unlike Ladybug), suggesting her mom is either missing or neglectful of her.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: When being Shadybug, Claw Noir accuses her of having tried to steal his Miraculous previously and when learning of the Absolute Miraculous Power, she without a second thought, steals his Miraculous to try to make a wish.
  • Non Conformist Dyed Hair: In her civilian form she has one of her bangs dyed dark magenta. In her supervillain form, it turns red while the rest of her hair turns black.
  • Oblivious to Love: Marinette never met Adrien personally and is unaware of him having a crush on her.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: As Shadybug, she shares the same palette as Ladybug, but with black as the dominant color to emphasize her villainy. Her hair is also black compared to Marinette's blue. After her Good Costume Switch, most of the black elements are removed, making her mostly resemble Ladybug's default costume.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: In her supervillain form, her eyes turn red.
  • Slasher Smile: Has these when attacking Ladybug and Cat Noir with her Lucky Charm weapons when being a supervillain.
  • Super-Strength: She demonstrates the strength to kick a car midair at the heroes.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Despite being technically allies, she and Claw Noir can barely stand each other. That changes (at least on Adrien's side) when they discover each other's identity.

    Adrien Agreste/Claw Noir

Claw Noir (Adrien Agreste)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adrien_agreste_alternate_universe.png
Click here to see him as Claw Noir
The villainous version of Adrien Agreste from an alternate universe. When he uses the Cat Miraculous, he transforms into Claw Noir.
  • Cast from Lifespan: He is able to use his full powers as many times as he wants (in contrast to Cat Noir, who only gains that skill late into season 5, which is several months later in-universe) despite not being old enough because he's using them for evil, but as a consequence doing so drains his life force.
  • Composite Character: Personality-wise,he has Movie Adrien's withdrawn tendencies and Félix's initial unscrupulous characterization. Costume-wise, he's basically a combination of Cat Walker (with the green hair and leather outfit, albeit in a more biker-like fashion) and Shadow Noir (what with the purple eyes).
  • Crush Blush: Has one when seeing Shadybug detransform into Marinette, despite having being handcuffed by her moments befofe.
  • Deliberate Injury Gambit: Claw Noir deliberately forces Cat Noir to hit him in the chest with Cataclysm, being crazy enough not to care about the potential damage so long as it depowers his foe. This leaves a cracked spot on his chest that is eventually cured when Shadybug uses her World-Healing Wave.
  • Emo Teen: He's an emo teen due to the loneliness from his lack of peers and strained relationship with his father.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite being the Supreme's enforcer. When he manages to take Cat Noir's Miraculous intending to use it to make a wish to bring their mother back, Cat Noir tells him that making that wish would rob someone else of their mother, which he wouldn't wish on anyone. When faced with this, Claw Noir decides he can't do that to someone else either.
  • Expy: To the version of Adrien from Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie, both being loners who never fully got over their respective mother's death compared to their prime universe version.
  • Friendless Background: He tells Cat Noir that he doesn't have anyone in his life, as his dad is busy with work all the time and he has no friends to talk to.
  • Good Costume Switch: After he decides to do good instead of evil, he changes his costume due to noticing his partner's own change of colors and after Cat Noir tells him he can do it.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After Claw Noir destroyed a "Kamiko", he angrily yells at Shadybug to stop being angry.
  • Instant Chucks: Claw Noir's staff is able to bifurcate and generate bladed ends connected by a cord, turning it into a pair of nunchucks.
  • Looks Like Cesare: His civilian form is noticeably paler and gaunter than the main universe's Adrien, with shadowed eyes.
  • Loves My Alter Ego: He gets along badly with Shadybug, but has feelings for Marinette.
  • Mirror Character:
    • To the prime universe's Monarch, who are both willing to sacrifice others using Gimmi's power to bring their respective Emilies back. Both even purposefully had Cat Noir inflict his Cataclysm on them in a crazy gambit, though Claw Noir got healed in time unlike Monarch.
    • The crush he has on his version of Marinette strongly echoes how Félix initially behaved towards Kagami.
    • To main universe Marinette, as both of them have a crush on someone from their world who is unaware of it and act awkwardly in front of their crushes.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: When letting a falling Shadybug to hit the ground where she apparently faints, Claw Noir moves in to steal her Miraculous, only to have his finger twisted by her.
  • Missing Mom: He deeply misses his mother and wanted to bring her back after finding out about the combined power of the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Even more so than Cat Noir. He can not only use his power as much as he wants, but summon a huge sphere of destructive energy he claims would be enough to destroy the planet, a display of power Cat Noir has only matched while akumatized.
  • Pet the Dog: Tries to comfort Shadybug when she broke down in tears after seeing her good counterpart's better life.
  • The Quiet One: He only speaks once as Adrien Agreste when transforming. Averted as Claw Noir, who loves cat puns just as much as his Good Counterpart.
  • Secondary Color Nemesis: He has green and magenta accent colors in his Claw Noir transformation, contrasting Cat Noir's yellow and green.
  • Spikes of Villainy: He's got spikes on his bell and his belt to emphasize his evil as Claw Noir.
  • Stalker with a Crush: This Adrien is infatuated with his version of Marinette, having the Gorilla stop by her bakery so he can admire her through the window, but Marinette has never actually met him.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Despite being technically allies, he and Shadybug can barely stand each other. That changes (at least on his side) when they discover each other's identity.
