Overalls, coveralls, dungarees -- no matter what you call them, they're good at covering up a person. Overalls consist of pants--or shorts, or a skirt--attached to a top front bib, and straps that hook over the shoulders, and are often made of something that can take the brunt of kids' activity such as denim, and cover clothing to keep what's underneath clean. They're also good at conveying a lot about a character. Jumper dresses (called pinafore dresses in the UK) are a variant, where the shorts or pants lower half are replaced with a skirt instead, and can be made either of denim or of something fancier. Children in overalls, unlike the rough rural adult perception, visually say a child is active, messy, and/or likely very rough on their clothes. You wouldn't put a preppy, fussy MommasBoy in overalls, but you'd put them on a young FarmersDaughter. It also conveys some level of being unable to dress ones' self (or prevalent to taking your clothes off in public -- it's much harder to strip completely out of overalls fast, though not impossible). This is particularly prevalent in animated or illustrated works or works aimed at children; a {{Tomboy}} will wear these to show she's not a frilly girl or prissy like others, for example, and if she has a [[TomboyWithAGirlyStreak bit of girliness]], she might wear the jumper style, blending the best of both traits. Kids can also be the more urban/inner city variant with the street smarts/cool fashion interpretation, same as older characters. The {{Tomboy}} is prone to wearing these. Compare to BoyishShorts (where young boys in shorts conveys youth and/or immaturity; unlike that, this can be a UnisexTrope).
