Most of the examples are zero-context. And the very fact that this character gets angry really easily goes against the spirit of a Berserk Button.

"Mount, mount, my soul! thy seat is up on high;
Whilst my gross flesh sinks downward, here to die."
King Richard II, Richard II, V.v

A classic way to show someone is dying. They have been shot, stabbed, poisoned, whatever, and then, recoiling from the wound, back into a wall and sink slowly to the ground. A smear of blood trailing down the wall is customary.

Can also be used to show a character is in shock or depressed (generally without the blood).

This is commonly used in theatre, because it's a good visual cue for the audience. It's also a reasonably cool death, combining Slow Motion Fall and Rebel Relaxation.

Also see Headdesk and Face Palm, two variations of the "extremely frustrated" version.

Unmarked Spoilers ahead, as this is a Death Trope.

  • In V For Vendetta, after V is shot at the end, he staggers and leans against a wall, leaving a V-shaped smear of blood. He still manages to walk a fair distance afterward, though.

"No chess grandmaster is normal; they only differ in the extent of their madness."
Viktor Korchnoi, grandmaster

Many writers view chess players as not just brilliant, but also mad as a hatter. As a result, this trope shows up in various works featuring chess or similar games such as go. Expect rants about conspiracies against the player, bizarre and borderline-OCD match behavior (such as demanding that spectators be seated in a symmetrical manner around the board, or throwing out people whose watches are ticking a bit too noticeably), and, in some cases, violent rage (culminating in flipping the board) or total depression. Expect someone to proclaim at one point that 'It's only a game!', and more often than not, the madman will disagree.

There are a few different reasons for this trope. Some writers may genuinely believe it, or may be alluding to specific Real Life players who were known for being a bit off. Others may be trying to develop An Aesop about the dangers of obsessions; the mad player in this case is almost always someone who spends almost all their time in isolation studying the game. It can also be shown to demonstrate the character's (usually a villain) psychopathy: s/he views people as pieces to be manipulated on a chessboard. There could also be anti-intellectual messages; if smart people play chess and chess players are nuts, then smart people in general must be crazy.

Expect the effect to be greatly intensified when certain chess variants are played instead, such as 3D chess, chess with a round board, chess with many new pieces, chess where you can't see your opponents pieces, 4-player chess, and even chess with random (and shifting) rules.

    Anime & Manga
  • Cowboy Bebop's 14th episode, entitled "Bohemian Rhapsody", contains a chess game between an old senile chess master and Cloudcuckoolander Ed. The game is played over the internet and lasts for days until the chess master wins, and subsequently dies. Overlaps with Smart People Play Chess, as this old senile chess master planned, decades in advance, for several spaceship warp gates to explode out of revenge for the company he worked for at the time that supervised the project.
  • Mao in Code Geass is crazy enough that he rigs a bomb to detonate and kill Nunally if he wins, in order to force Lelouch to play him. Subverted (or perhaps reinforced) in that he doesn't actually know how to play chess except by reading Lelouch's mind.
  • Ami in Sailor Moon plays an opponent, Berthier, who is such a lunatic that she freezes different parts of Ami's body as Ami loses her pieces. Granted, Berthier was going through a Despair Event Horizon, thinking she was worthless and preparing to die. She eventually Heel Face Turns and loses the 'crazy' part.
    • The manga and Crystal has a chess match between the same opponents, but Berthier is more crazy and less sympathetic: she tries to exploit Ami's fear to distract her into losing the match and used dowsing to decide her next moves. When the dowsing crystal stops reacting, she realizes Ami will checkmate her, and proceeds to directly attack her, which led to her own death and Ami's capture by the Black Moon Clan.
  • Durarara's Izaya doesn't just play chess. He plays chess-reversi-cards-alcohol-matches. And he is definitely crazy.
  • Pandora Hearts has Vincent, though his crazy and chess-playing don't overlap.

    Comic Books
  • The Joker is a brilliant chess player able to consistently beat Ras Al Ghul, Batman's oldest (as in, the most long-lived in-universe) and most strategically sound foe, at chess.
  • Judge Dredd: Judge Death, who thinks life itself is a crime punishable by death, has been a master at chess since his teens. He doesn't really get around to it anymore after becoming a zombie, though.

    Comic Strips

    Films — Live-Action
  • In X 2 X Men United, Magneto and Professor X play chess at the end.
  • Brainwashed, based on the novel The Royal Game.
  • Green Lantern 2011 — Hector Hammond, soon to be infused with yellow fear energy, is first seen playing chess against a computer.
  • The main character in Knight Moves, a chess grandmaster, spends a lot of time as a patient in asylums.
  • Two Thousand One A Space Odyssey: A Genius Bonus for chess enthusiasts is found in the game that HAL 9000 and Poole play; although HAL predicts mate, there's actually a way for Poole to avoid it. A subtle hint at HAL's error-prone nature...
  • In Sherlock Holmes A Game Of Shadows, an epic chess match between Holmes and the main antagonist serves as both the climax and a representation for the entire movie's events. It should also be mentioned that both of them were not using a chess board and playing throughout portions of the match.
  • Pawn Sacrifice is a biopic about Bobby Fischer (cf. Real Life below), focusing on the World Chess Championship 1972 and Fischer growing more and more insane.
  • Searching For Bobby Fischer: There are some creepy weirdos at the chess club that Josh goes to. Part of the goal of the Waitzkin family is to make sure Josh doesn't turn out like them.

    Literature
  • Through The Looking Glass, the sequel to Alices Adventures In Wonderland, features a chess-crazed Looking-Glass World. Wonderland, of course, is populated mostly by those who are as mad as hatters.
  • Famously, in Vladimir Nabokov's The Defense, the chess grandmaster is so tormented that his whole life disintegrates. Even when he resolves to abandon chess for the sake of his sanity, he finds that he can't. The protagonist, Luzhin, is based on the real chess player (and nut) Curt von Bardeleben.
  • Los Voraces 2019 is about a $20,000,000 tournament in the future. A good chunk of the players are... a bit odd. And then there's the serial killer.

It's easy to get obsessed with chess.
—Magnus Carlsen, highest rated chess player of all time

Western DragonsEastern Dragons
Are scaly and reptilian (outwardly, anyway), and usually serpentine. Are Mix And Match Critters, though the exact components vary (generally, they can best be described as "lion-snakes"). They sometimes evolve out of Seahorses or Legendary Carp.
Generally depicted with pointed and unbranched horns, or otherwise entirely hornless. Frills and fins are also common in modern depictions.Generally possess short, deer-like antlers.
Normally associated with fire, which they often breathe as an attack. In Greco-Roman and Germanic myths, they're more likely to be heavily associated with water instead, and to live in lakes, swamps or wells.Normally associated with water (and the sky, which was considered an ocean in classical Chinese thought), and are often considered bringers of rain. Furthermore, the Azure Dragon and the Yellow Dragon are associated with Wood and Earth, respectively. In some works, some Chinese dragons are capable of breathing fire. In some legends, they are capable of this after being punished.

Primary Stylistic Influences:
Secondary Stylistic Influences:

Blues rock is a separate genre of Blues music that appeared in The Sixties in the UK and the USA, though largely created by British bands. Blues-rock is basically a hybrid between 12-bar blues and rock, with frequent use of Improv and jamming and an overall heavier sound. The style eventually evolved into Hard Rock, which is basically heavier Blues rock at its core.

While arguably the genre's specific guitar style was invented by Lonnie Mack with his 1963 single "Memphis", this discovery went unnoticed at the time. The genre itself basically came about when the British became exposed to Blues imported from the USA and started their own bands. These bands quickly gained the edge in one area traditional Blues music lacked: volume. By cranking their amps Up To Eleven, bashing the hell out of their drums and worshipping the almighty Epic Riff, bands such as John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, The Yardbirds, Cream, Led Zeppelin and the UK-based Jimi Hendrix decisively established blues-rock as a genre in its own right.

A video game level which takes a ridiculously short time to complete when compared to others in the game. In most cases, it will take no more than a few seconds. May often apply to tutorial levels if they are supposed to teach you just a single mechanic of the game. A Boss Only Level featuring a Zero Effort Boss may be this.

There are a number of ways of twisting this concept for comedic effect, as invented by the famous comedian Hitomi Namesake:
  1. Mention an invention that was named in this way, but get some detail wrong (for instance, by suggesting that John Montagu, Earl of Sandwich, is famous for inventing the montagu).
  2. Mention an invention that wasn't named this way, but claim that it was (for instance, by claiming that shaving cream was invented by Albert Shavingcream).
  3. Reveal that something seemingly named using a description or a fictional analogue of real life was actually named after a person, in an inversion of the above (for instance, the ski mask was the invention of the burglar Daisy Ski, and skiing isn't present in this setting).

  • There's an Alas Smith And Jones sketch about László Bíró, the inventor of the ballpoint pen. This is true. The Namesake Gag comes in when he's worried that someone might steal his idea, and is assured there's no-one in the house except the servants: Bic the butler, Parker the chauffeur, Pentel the maid...
  • All Aussie Adventures has the Mitchell Track, which Russell Coight tells us is named for the explorer who first opened up the area, Mitchell Track (as opposed to Major Thomas Mitchell). Other examples are Fry's Hut being named for its builder Fred Hut, and Mt. Disappointment being named for its discoverer's wife.
  • Blackadder
    • "Ink and Incapability":
Blackadder: Baldrick, go to the kitchen and make me something quick and simple to eat, would you? Two slices of bread with something in between.
Baldrick: What, like Gerald Lord Sandwich had the other day?
Blackadder: Yes, a few rounds of geralds.
    • Blackadder Back and Forth:
Blackadder: May I present to you, the greatest breakthrough in travel since Sir Rodney Tricycle thought to himself, "I'm bored of walking. I think I'll invent something with three wheels and a bell, and name it after myself"...

    Newspaper Comics
  • In Peanuts, Sally has to write a report about Columbus Day...
