WesternAnimation So....
"Cupcake and Dino: General Services" may just be one of the worst cartoons that I've ever seen. Jesus Christ.
It basically takes two awful cartoons, that also happen to be 'buddy comedies': "Breadwinners" and "Pickle and Peanut" and throws them into a blender.
Both of those cartoons were really, really bad on their own, but "Cupcake and Dino" is basically the two 'toons combined into one entity, making for a disastrous mix.
It has a similar art style, similar main duo who have a job just like the Breadwinners and Pickle and Peanut do. Cupcake and Dino go around doing the titular "general services", whereas the Breadwinners go around town delivering bread to ducks and Pickle and Peanut are the clerks of a grocery store, respectively.
Combine those two already horrible cartoons into one, and you've got a monstrosity of a cartoon that outright spits in the face of animation.
WesternAnimation Come Because You Were Told It Was Utter Garbage, Stay Because It's Actually Awesome
EDIT: This review is a bit old, but after some thought, I felt it needed an update to really do this show justice.
Quite a while ago, I entirely decided to watch this show because of the other review on this page claiming it was just an even worse version of Breadwinners and Pickle & Peanut. Eager to see how awful it was, I came in with the absolute lowest expectations. I ended up liking the show a lot more than I expected, and having a lot more time to sit on it, rewatch it a bunch, and develop my thoughts more, I LOVE IT.
First off, the animation is excellent. The show's Flash animation is fluid and dynamic, almost matching Mercury Filmworks in quality. The artstyle likewise is quite appealing - cutesy and colorful with the distinct artstyle of Pedro Eboli (albeit without the noses). The show also has a lot of Medium Blending similar to that of Spongebob Squarepants or The Amazing World of Gumball (befitting of the show's "random" aesthetic). While it does not bother me as much as it did before, I still feel it takes attention way from the top-notch animation, deceiving viewers into thinking the show is "lazier" than it actually is.
I also want to say that the writing for this show is great! Far from a stereotypically obnoxious "identically stupid dudebros annoy everyone"-type cartoon, Cupcake & Dino is a show with an unshakably optimistic attitude. Deceptively laidback in tone, it is incredibly sincere in its positive nature, celebrating brotherhood and the working man through its two incredibly likeable and well-rounded protagonists. In fact, pretty much every major character on the show is likeable. I will also commend the show for its comedy; its sense of humor is as shamelessly silly as it is surprisingly clever, just like many of the most beloved kids' cartoons. And the humor of the show is well-supported by its plots, which excel at creating plenty of entertaining zaniness out of the main duo's often mundane odd jobs while also imparting a few lessons that also lead to some heartwarming moments.
And while some will probably find the theme song annoying (which is fine), I personally think it is very catchy and reflects the show's positive attitude. If anything, it reminds me a lot of the theme tunes of Spongebob, Camp Lazlo, and Wander Over Yonder - all very similar shows tonally. The rest of the soundtrack is quite good too, although not in a uniquely special way.
Far from a spit in the face to animation, Cupcake & Dino is a delightful series made with love and care and following more in the spirit of Spongebob Squarepants and early Adventure Time than the much-maligned bromantic buddy comedies I was told it was like. A highly recommended series for anybody looking for an overlooked comedy-driven show. And I know I'm not in the minority opinion either, given the large amount of positive reception to it that I've discovered across the Internet and among professional critics.
