New Super Luigi U compared to New Super Mario Bros. U is like comparing the bros themselves. They may seem similar or the same at first glance, but closer inspection reveals some differences.
This is not just "NSMBU minus Mario and most of the time limit", the game itself is a lot different in playstyle. While NSMBU allows for more exploration, NSLU focuses more on speed and quick thinking. While it's built on the bones of the original game, it still manages to be different. A higher-jumping Luigi, more well-hidden Star Coins, speedruns for the entire game, 9 more worlds of levels that aren't copy-pasted from NSMBU, and the Propeller and Penguin Suits showing up a bit earlier than they did in the original make this something that is comparable to the original, but still manages to be unique.
The gameplay is really fun. Luigi literally leaps and bounds over the bar set by Mario, finally bringing his high jumps and slippery shoes back to the main Mario series. 80 speedy levels will have you looking in every nook and cranny for the Star Coins and secret exits while making sure you don't get killed. Multiplayer returns, and it's just as hectic, if not more than NSMBU.
There are a few things that are less than satisfactory. The levels are short, and while that makes the levels a quick challenge, it still... well, makes the game short, giving you less time to experience Luigi's jump. The bosses are also nothing new, and Luigi's high jump makes them even easier than they were previously.
Ultimately, though, if you want more New Super Mario Bros. U, than Luigi is here to grace you with a new adventure that, while a bit snack-sized, can still stand up to the original game in quality. Enjoy the game, and happy speedrunning!
VideoGame Fun, but short. But fun!
