Manga Well I like it...
I'll preface this review with this: yes, I like Mashima's previous work. Make of that what you will...
Let me first dispel this common accusation: this is not a simple copy of Fairy Tail, no more than Fairy Tail is a copy of Rave Master. Aside from the story, setting, and powers being ‘’completely’’ different, the characters aren’t the same. True, while Shiki is a dunce like Natsu, whereas Natsu was a hot-headed brawler with a hair-trigger temper, Shiki’s a wide-eyed explorer with an all inclusive friendliness; and, whereas Lucy was a runaway princess striving to find her place in a world filled with super people, Rebecca’s a quick-witted adventurer with a surprisingly violent edge. Even Happy's not the same as he is in Fairy Tail, but I won't say how because it's actually kind of funny. Yes, there are more blatant expies like Elsie Crimson and Justice, but both are supporting characters, and even they aren’t really the same. I could go on listing how each major character isn’t just a copy of those from Fairy Tail, but I won't because I don't think I have enough space.
The story is interesting as well, less closely resembling Fairy Tail, than works like One Piece, in that involves a quest transcending a large setting, and having various adventures along the way; it still does have enough differences in style and substance to make it its own thing though (I'm sure there will be those calling it a "rip-off"). What I like the most is all the different worlds they go to, and how no two villains function the same way; it requires the heroes to think outside the box, and use their abilities in different ways. There is a particular detail that the series incorporates that I really liked, but its heavy with spoilers, so I won't bring it up. There is also plenty of mystery set up as willow with just enough left in the dark to want me to keep reading.
Anyway, I of course liked it, quite a bit actually, and I know others who do as well, and the coming anime adaptation may expand that audience. On that note though, if you don't like Mashima’s previous works, you might not enjoy this, but to each their own.
