FanFic Not quality work, but very fun
This fic isn't very well written, and it's very obnoxious and pretentious at times. But even so, it's one of my favorite fics. Sure, it's kind of crappy, what with the song lyrics spread all over the place and the ridiculous origin story of the protagonist, but it's charming too. I laughed out loud at several points throughout the story, and it was very enjoyable to read. It's a matter of preference, but I think that so long as the reader doesn't take the fic too seriously, they'll have a good time.
Fanfic If Persona 3 were 'Metal Gear Solid', Fairly English Story would be 'Twin Snakes'
I enjoyed this fic a lot when I was younger. But I re-read it recently, and wasn't as impressed. Below are some issues I have. Spoilers ahoy.
The MC is a Christian from England. The author is a Mormon from England. Keep that in mind.
Chapter 3: The MC is basically Jason Bourne because of his rough background in the ever-so-dangerous county of... Yorkshire. This kid is 17 years old.
Chapter 17: Tanaka employs the MC for having incredible financial advice. This kid is 17 years old.
Chapter 18: The author copy-pastes Sonic songs during some fight scenes, like 'I Am All of Me' in this chapter. Sonic songs. Sonic (the kid-focused and kid-friendly hedgehog) songs.
Chapter 21: The MC can sing like Celine Dion ("I turned around and everyone was in shock.")
Chapter 25: The MC can read people like an open book (MC: "Well, you know I can see Micro Expressions when I concentrate on someone's face?" Mitsuru: "No." MC: "Well, I can.").
Chapter 28: The author inserts the Drama CD 'Commu Break', which has Aigis in it. 15 chapters before she's introduced.
Chapter 31: The MC is "Ambidextrous", is godlike with the guitar ("I sliced my fingertips open [...] Down to the bone."), and also with the piano ("This piano [...] begged for a skilled master. Alright then.").
Chapter 47: The MC compares the societal collapse from Apathy Syndrome to Hurricane Katrina. In a business meeting, Pharos tells the MC "... your financial advice is practically gospel to these people". This kid is 17 years old.
Chapter 61: The author apologises to several people for having the MC say something about how Japan has no obligation to care about 9/11 because America bombed them.
Chapter 62: The MC and Lucifer have a conversation about terrorism. Al-Qaeda is mentioned.
Chapter 66: During an emotional moment with a tree just after October 4th... "I wrapped a hand around its narrow turnk".
Chapter 95: The MC performs a duet with Igor. Shortly before this, the army had stormed Gekkoukan and killed 93 students and 3 teachers because the super powerful MC chose not to surrender to them.
The fight scenes are pretty good, though. Detailed, fast-paced, easy brain images. Gotta give the author credit for that.
So yeah, give it a go!
Fanfic So am I the first to say it?
Hoo boy, what can I say? Sam Jaz's vision of Minato is one that really takes a look at how powerful the P3 protaganist really is, not only in terms of Persona strength but also his mentality. He is quietly insane in the best possible way - which has caught many readers off-guard, labeling him as a GodModeSue.
However, Minato does go through a whole realm of development, so calling him that doesn't do this fic the justice it deserves. What we have here is a work that decided to cut loose and push the boundaries of the universe, blending together outside influences, resulting in something quite unique. While it is, admittedly, slow to start out, it quickly evolves into a narrative drenched in Rule Of Cool, with some interesting, seemingly small tweaks here and there that soon spiral into massive, well executed plot twists.
The writing has a Beige Prose quality to it, making for quick, rapid reading that can be quite engrossing, and the story relishes in how it can make each moment more over the top and dramatic than the previous ones.
Even if you think you know the story of Persona 3, you won't see what's coming. Definitely recommended.
Fanfic Waste of Time.
Personally thought that the story was unbearable from the start with just generally bad writing. The fact that around 80 percent of the edits and tropes added on the actual page on the site was made by the author doesn't speak well of it either, especially considering that many of them like the BadAss and it's various subtypes are incredibly opinionated. I also found Minato Arisoto too irritating to care about him, not because he is so strong(and really, he's a video game character, so that's a pointless complaint to have at all), but I just never saw the point of making him British, making all of this Englishman humor annoying. I loathe Yukari in every sense of the word, so I ignored the ship. However, I greatly enjoyed this incarnation of Ken, and no longer found him a brat. The fact that Sam Jaz was willing to explain how gameplay mechanics worked in-universe was also a nice plus for me. The biggest praise I will give this fic is the sheer amount of Continuity Porn shown by meeting the Persona 1 , Persona 2, and Persona 4 cast; as well as meeting THE Lucifer from the main timeline.. Having said that, I would never recommend this fic to anyone.
