This is worth checking out

Ava's Demon, a glance at the frontpage of the website tells you that this is going to special. I'm not a big fan of gimmicks in webcomics (and there are animated sections at the end of each chapter which I don't particularly like, but are easily skippable), but there is something about using the borders of the image that is actually very powerful. Squares are a very unnatural and sharp shape so perhaps breaking it up helps the eye take in the page better. Unsounded does it to great effect to.

And the comic itself gives the same impression of a creator who has a real vision for what she wants to happen. Each page is gorgeous and simple. It communicates a lot through the beautiful artwork, but despite my expectations it's not confusing or so artsy that there isn't also a solid story behind there. There can be slow sections, but they always pick up into weightier sections full of information and goings on.

The art gives tone to everything and every detail seems to have a purpose, there are definite colour schemes to the entities, Ava's demon has glowing red embery pages, whereas pages concerning the totalitarian Titan (whether his followings or his backstory) are a colder more ordered blue.

Perhaps that's putting people off, because it's a very obvious*

colouring, but it works because they don't devote any word space or dialogue to spelling it out for you. Instead of reinforcing something already meant to be picked up by the events of the comic, the colouring is the clue to Titan's (supposed) personality and we're supposed to be reading it.

In fact this is the first time the colour scheme has filled in a plot point for me. It was only later when they were giving backstory about a character that I realised the school at the beginning was very similar looking and it probably meant that the school was related to that character.

I'm impressed with what I've seen so far and when it's course comes to an end this has the opportunity of being something very precious. Everything feels cohesive and the writing and storytelling is strong enough to support the beautiful pictures.
