Star Wars Holiday Special ends with a cop out.

It's not a lot that Doug's videos disappoint me, but the review of the Star Wars Holiday Special really let me down.

The Deus Ex Machina is totally blatant, the new character was unimaginative, and the song about him was trying way too hard to make him into a Memetic Badass. I watched the video to see Doug get emotionally beat up by the special. The only thing that can be said for the ending is that it's almost as pointless and random as the rest of the special, but the point of the video was that's a bad thing.

What they should have done is have that guy pretend to be George Lucas and help Doug go to town on the copy the way Doug did for Bebe's Kids.

EDIT: It's not about taking it seriously. It's about being funny. Some guy appearing out of nowhere and making it all better is not a joke, unless you are making fun of that. They played it straight, and ruined the humor of watching Critic getting emotionally tortured.

... You do realized the amount of backlash you're going to get for saying that? (I'm not the type of person who hates people over silly things like opinions. I'm just saying.)

It's just a comedy video. You don't have to take it that seriously.

I agree. It was pretty anticlimatic.

The ending was really unfunny. In fact it completely missed the mark, considering how good the opening was.

Book me today! I also review weddings, funerals and bar mitzvahs.

While I agree with you that the whole Santa Christ thing was rather dumb but I think that having him destroy a copy would in the end be even worse. Thats more of an AVGN thing to destroy the subject of the review than a NC hence why he did it in his video game review which was nothing but a Take That at people who called him an AVGN ripoff.

Well, pfuh. I liked Santa Christ and it's not the first time silly skits have capped the reviews. At least this time he didn't end by accidentally bashing Citizen Kane instead. He'll never live that down ;)

Does a single, if prolonged, gag really need its own review? This seems more fitting for a forum post or something. I mean, a review usually carries some implication that it's intended for a prospective viewer. This just seems like you wanted to vent. It doesn't give much information about the video or series as a whole is worth watching.

Santa Christ was hilarious.

I'm with you there. I found Santa Christ to be a cheap way to quickly sweep the review under the rug. I don't really think it's a blunder that deserves its own review, though.

I have to say, I REALLY didn't like the gag, because of my religious beliefs.

Not to be bigoted or anything, but I think it's pretty obvious that a Christian would watch this vid at some point or another, and they'd be at least a little cringe-y about it at the least.

However I mostly enjoyed the rest of the vid, a tad long, but that's okay.

I think the gag was intended, especially given its recurrence in Shwarzenegga month, as a dig at the overblown action badass type of character and definitely satire aimed at something other than Christianity, but I do admit it made me uncomfortable. Bizarrely I found his review of End of Days to be probably the best of the month, given that it points out the madness of this concept. I would never watch the film itself because it looks terrible.

In the beginning there was nothing, and it exploded. Terry Pratchett 35 tropes so far.

They needed a way to end the review quickly. He'd already said everything that was bad about it- bringing on a new character was an effective way to call the review "done." It was a weak gag, but it finished things.

For the Record, I'm a Christian, but I still find Santa Christ pretty hilarious.

In other words, let's just agree that Your Mileage May Vary on this joke.

Uh, shouldn't this review be under the Nostalgia Critic's page?

Actually if you view Santa Christ's appearance as a setup for Kickassia then a lot of the flaws get forgiven in my eyes.

I found the Christmas Special review all around pretty under whelming myself, but I attributed that more to the nature of the source material: after all, you can make a lot of fun about So Bad Its Good material, but here we have the worst form of So Bad Its Horrible, so I was really just feeling the pain & boredom of the original content coming trough.

Listen to the review commentary, the tape they had went before the end of the special, so they were kind of stuck.

I'm a Christian, and sure the whole "He's Jesus mashed into Santa" thing is pretty uncomfortable. But the song parodying just how awesome he was made up for it. He's a Parody Sue. Plus, Rob acts him pretty well.

In the commentary, they say that the copy they had ended right then and there, so they needed a way to end the review without bringing attention to the fact that they had no ending for the actual special. Also, I liked their ending. Very funny.
