Disappointing

I like sandboxes. I don't like this.

The last two games of this style I've played are Saints Row 2 & Mercenaries 2. Perhaps that's the source of my only but significant grievance with the game; the combat can be extremely grindy.

It isn't bad to start with, but once you get into the game, pretty much every mission involves Hunters, a kind of Infected who sponge damage like a bitch (and don't get me started on the super-hunters, or whatever they're called). This makes it very boring to fight them when every "combo" is just a different animation to accompany the damage. It felt exactly like the time I decided to collect every flag in Assassin's Creed (I didn't finish that mission, either)

Maybe I'm just bad at the game. But, when I realised that I was groaning inside every time those pink motherfuckers came on-screen, I stopped playing

I honestly have no idea what you mean. You continuously get many different powers and moves to pull on your enemies, it shouldn't feel grindy at all. Once you get the blade power hunters go down in 1 hit. I still sometimes go into the game just to go on a rampage and fuck shit up, because it's fun.

I disagree and agree with Kain, I never found it hard, I actually breezed through the game, which is what makes it feel "grindy" to me, combat takes on a formula that borders on the boring at times with only boss battles breaking it up. What I found irritating was that eventually many of the earlier powers or some of them to start with are totally useless later on. The vision power that lets you see the infected is only useful for that one mission, otherwise I never had to use it. The armor you get was useless to me from the start because I used Mercer's maneuverability as a major weapon and losing that was more of a hindrance than a help. Also, the hammerfists and the awesome claws become useless once you get the blade arm. Many of the unarmed techniques were useless, with me only gathering them after I had won the game and using them during one of the many rampages that you enjoy, Mc Someguy. I have more problems with the character of Alex Mercer than I do with the gameplay, as I've found many of the sandboxes tend to all have that problem of being formulaic.

Hunters are grindy? Really?

Throw shit at them. Flying kick them and jump away. Grab a rocket launcher. Once you get Blade, they're punks to be mowed down and thrown on the pile with the rest.

If you're having trouble with Hunters at any point past the first third of the game, then its because you suck at this game.

There was one part I found unnecessarily grindy, which was the first time inside one of the military bases where you have to fight 4 or 5 waves of hunters in increasing numbers. But that was before getting any upgrades and really getting used to the feel of the gameplay (and this sequence helped quite a bit with the latter).
