An adorably bizarre cartoon adventure.

This was the game that introduced me to Amanita Design, Jaromir Plachy, and DVA, and it's great.

Chuchel (pronounced "chuh-chel" in a video by Plachy) is a hairball creature who wants a cherry. His friend/rival Kekel and a giant hand are determined to keep him away from it, forming a strong cartoon conflict. What ensues is a slapstick show full of silly, whimsical, bizarre, and grotesque characters. Chuchel is a no-consequence game and often isn't challenging, since its focus is firmly on the charming animation. Puzzles have wrong solutions that you'll be tempted to try just for the gags that result, and the game frequently has cutscenes capped off by the title to pace out the vignettes. Some sequences have more active control as other gameplay styles get mimicked.

The game looks wonderful. Its watercolor-style sketchy illustrations and strange creatures are incredibly charming. Chuchel's design had to be changed because it accidentally resembled blackface caricatures, and I support the decision to change it, but I'm not sure how I like the new color palette for him—maybe a bright blue would have looked better to me. Otherwise, though, the game is visually perfect to me, which really matters for something existing primarily as an animation showcase.

This is a really charming game with some great surprises and gags. If you like classic cartoons or quirky illustration, then this is a must-play.
