Surprisingly good! Not a MCU classic, but still really nice!

First, let me preface this by stating that I went into this movie without reading any of the related comics, and also avoided all reviews. Additionally, there's two Stingers, but only the first one is necessary to watch for continuity's sake.

To make a long story short, the film's quite good. Not fantastic or one of the best films in all of the MCU, but it's still really fun and entertaining, and I had a blast watching it. The best way to describe this film in terms of quality, tone, and overall aesthetic imo is that of both the first Guardians of the Galaxy film and Captain America: The First Avenger. Really, the movie generally feels like a film that would've been in Phase 1 of the MCU, but I mean that in the best way in the sense of its (relatively) lighthearted tone and existence as an Origin Story for Captain Marvel.

But anyone, I'll put the rest of my thoughts into bullet points:

  • My initial fears about Brie Larson were clearly unfounded - She gave a really great performance in this as Carol Danvers/"Vers", both kicking ass and being genuinely compelling & funny to watch. Samuel L. Jackson is also (as always) fantastic as Nick Fury, and both he & Larson have fantastic chemistry together. I honestly want the next Captain Marvel film to just be the two of them hanging out for the majority of it like a buddy cop movie. Lashana Lynch as Maria (Carol's long-lost friend on Earth) also works really well and has a lot of great chemistry with Larson.

  • The plot twist regarding the Kree and Skrulls was surprisingly well-executed, and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos was a really entertaining and compelling character. I do wish more development had been given to Starforce in retrospect, but I can understand why they were used the way they were, and they're still fine overall.

  • The ultimate reveal for how Fury's eye was ruined might be one of the funniest anticlimaxes I've ever seen in the MCU. On a side note, both Coulson and Stan Lee (RIP) had great cameos here.

  • The movie's soundtrack is also really nice, and the cinematography & special effects are gorgeous. The final fight in space was also fantastic, being even better than what we saw in the trailers!

  • My only real complaints are that the first act of the film felt rather disjointed and awkward in its overall structure, but it's admittedly semi-justified in the film itself. Also, the villains are overall a bit weaker this time around, but I feel it's still not a deal-breaker.

Overall, I really liked it (thought I still recognize that it's not perfect or anything), and I hoped I didn't over or under-hype the movie up for anyone. Still, I highly recommend that you should all go see it!

The cinematography? Nearly every non-CGI scene is shot in the flattest, most unimaginative way possible;, to the point many reviewers have noticed it. Don\'t mistake good CGI for good cinematography.
