Ouch, sorry to hear you had a confusing time. I recommend you play through the whole series at some point, I feel you\'ll enjoy III even more that way (and most of the un-numbered games are either good or at least decent).
I feel it's better to watch some sort of summary on You Tube or something (charii5's everything wrong with series is a good example). Internet personalities play the entire series, but for most cases, that option is too time consuming and tedious.
You might rush through the games to cut time, but that might diminish the experience and understanding of the them (since some optional superbosses and secret epilogues matter). Even with the collections, which boils the plot of some of them into movies, there's Chain of Memories, Birth by Sleep, Dream Drop Distance and Burth by Slepp 0.2 a Fragmented Passage.

Fun, but Convoluted
I replayed I and II leading up to Kingdom Hearts III coming out and thought that would be enough to get me caught up on the story.
Boy was I wrong.
I had no idea what was going on AT ALL throughout my entire 40 hour playthrough of the game. Apparently there are 7-8 other games I had no idea existed that are integral to understanding III's story. More so than I and II. Wish I'd known about that going in.
The gameplay is fun, though. 10/10 would sit through confusing cutscenes again.
