Spoiler-free review

Cons :

  • Personally, I prefer the plot of the original film and characters. Of course this is just a matter of taste.
  • There is inappropriate timing for the joke.
  • The main villain is somewhat cartoonish.
  • The villain reveal would be a nice plot twist had it not been blatantly shown earlier.

Pros :

  • Awesome action scenes, CGI, realistic-looking robot and buildings... what more do you ask? It is all very entertaining. Oh, and there's some minor drama too.
  • Newt and Gottlieb's acting. It brings back memories.

Overall, I would recommend this film especially if you have watched the first one.

See, I don't consider the movie's villain to have been "blatantly shown".

When I saw him drifting with the brain, I thought he had just befriended it, and was drifting with it daily to talk to it, and basically had a kaiju-waifu. It seemed a very "him" thing to do. The fact that that's not what it was is one of the primary reasons I hate the movie as much as I do.
