What is this mixed feeling I have about this movie?

Even though I don't particularly like MCU anymore (for variety of reasons), but I can admit that some movies were great. This movie... is not one of those movies for me.

Pros:

  • Zemo: I liked Zemo. A simple non-flashy villain with non-convoluted motivations is a welcome change, especially since he is well-acted. Some of his plans are contrived, though.

  • Black Panther: Awesome char period with quite good character development. Might watch his movie.

  • Spider-Man: His abilities and personality were quite spot on.

  • Final Battle: It was pretty great. Dramatic and quite brutal. Cap leaving his shield is just awesome and means many things.

  • Captain America is quite human: I like how he is portrayed as still human with flaws, not a flawless hero. While many detract Cap for siding with Bucky, he is still the only link to 1940s Steve had as of now.

  • No set-ups: Thank goodness it's self-contained.

Meh:

  • Airport Battle: Yeah, it's not a bad scene, but I have major problems with this scene. Small scale of it is the least of its problems. Lowered stakes (comedy and non-consequential injuries) is a major no-no for me (under normal circumstances) and.... it just being underwhelming for me. Maybe it's because of boring visuals? Probably.

  • Deconstruction aspects: It's close to Bad category for me. I think it's even worse here than in Bv S. At least that movie showed something (before abandoning it in 3rd act). Civil War... doesn't really do anything about it as far as I'm concerned. It didn't even try. No one brings up any substantial arguments for their sides.

  • The way conflict ends: It's not bad, of course, but... it feels half-assed. Besides, the fact that they'll team up in Infinity War only worsens this. There's no permanent damage to the team.

  • Not a psychological thriller: As far as I see it, it's just a drama movie. I'm almost pissed because of it.

Bad:

  • Location Title: I have no words for it. Just... no.

I... don't know how to explain it, I just... didn't feel anything about this movie except disappointment. It didn't feel special, even though it should have been. It's not awful, but it's not great either, playing in a safe zone. 6/10 for me. Not a bad movie, but I felt only disappointment.

Zemo's actually one of the worst aspects of the movie. In the comics, Baron Zemo is both physically imposing and terrifyingly calculating. In the movie, Helmut Zemo is just insanely lucky. His whole plan relies on three things: 1. Tony isn't dealing with problems in his usual Black Comedy way. 2. No one is running a proper investigation. 3. For better or worse, the Avengers are only taking the Accords at face value, and a very superficial one at that. Although, if you want to be extra laconic, then Good Is Dumb. Additionally, his motivation is the same hollow one that Ultron did better, even if only slightly.

Black Panther is definitely one of the best things about this movie, but Spider-Man on the other hand, his inclusion actually disproves your "No set-ups" conclusion. Did you forget that the plot comes to a halt for Peter Parker? It's to set up a future Spidey movie, and guess what followed this movie. Additionally, Captain America is not that human. Even Civil War still fails to fix (or even address) the issue of how Cap is somehow on the same level as a god, albeit one that is actually a super-powerful alien being. He is able to beat Tony's armor with his own hands. His fighting style should be very shield-oriented when it comes to non-human and armored foes. Although Bucky is indeed Cap's last link to the '40s, the film doesn't even entertain that idea. Maybe if Disney/Marvel let the Russos go with the extended funeral scenes that would have actually explained his disconnect with the future. Seriously, the MCU is adamant about Cap actually being a man with an existential crisis.

I'm guessing you didn't watch the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman when you typed this.
