Sorry about the multitudes of new tiny edits. Re-reading the book series has got me thinking about some more tropes.
I streamlined the description of the novel as I felt the spoiler tags prevented it being read easily.
I also moved two tropes to YMMV. "Gentleman Adventurer" because I added a qualifier to the trope page (ie, Hannay is a retired mining engineer who finds a lack of employment depressing and terrifying; not a rich man with no day job who prefers to be that way so he can find time for adventure). I also moved "Contrived Coincidence" to YMMV because there is a serious school of thought arguing that the coincidences are intentional and meant to show a divine providence at work: http://inwhichireadvintagenovels.blogspot.com.au/2012/02/providence-and-greenmantle.html
