I only saw this movie once and I saw Death Note as well. The only similarities are in extremely broad strokes—the main character is a morally ambiguous man who pulls off a Xanatos Roulette. Which could easily be attributed to, say, Batman or The Count of Monte Cristo.
There is no supernatural element in this film, nor does Clyde Shelton have delusions of godhood as did Light. Furthermore, Jamie Foxx's character does not make a fitting L/Mello/Near analogue since until the end of the movie he is always one step behind Clyde. At best he is analogous to the Japanese police.
Removed the item from YMMV—
